VS sang an interesting concert for BGS. I love PS's nATTaikurinji varNam, and VS sang it quite beautifully. I particularly loved his intense neraval and swaras for the nATTai kriti, with beautiful brighas about the niSAdam. SunAdavinOdini (thanks to Kamalamba for informing me about the ragam) was decidedly not my cuppa, but that's a personal preference. The vasantabhairavi kriti was sung in TNS fashion. The sAvEri was a highlight for me: the alapanai was comprehensive, and the neraval and swaras were all well done. I always welcome an elaborate sAvEri!

VS clearly keeps working on his music, which is admirable. Specifically, there has been a marked improvement in his voice culture. He modulated his voice beautifully during the concert, but I still fear that the sheer volume of brighas that he sings will wear his voice down eventually. Of course, there are musical reasons too for exercising greater discretion in balancing brigha and gamaka.

Sanjeev, whom I'm hearing for the first time, played beautifully. All his responses were succinct and aesthetic. R. Sankaranarayanan played with good azhuttam and anticipation, and his tani was brisk and engaging.

I wish there had been sufficient time for a pallavi, though.

Bilahari - was the violonist Sanjeev or Rajeev? You have both names in your review...

I am losing it. The violinist was clearly a disciple of Smt A. Kanyakumari. I hope that would make it Rajeev.

Karacharana Kritam Vaa is a slokham (not viruththam) by Adi shankarA . VS's parama guru SSI used to delight us with this rendition. Also love to hear that lovely mahadeva shiva shambhO
RAdhA samEdha krishnA is in mishra yaman (the composer is not known). Great to see Vshankar's review

Bilahari,
few corrections.
Concert was from 4 to 6.20 pm,so 2.20 mts concert

About the concert

sunAdavinOdini was the pick of the concert. It was a surprise from shankar.
He has treated the devadideva very well..
SAvEri it seems one of the hot favourite of the season.
On 20th Sri.Vijay Shiva gave a moving saveri in MA.
Shankar's sAvEri alapana and Sri.Periasamy Thooran's 'Muruga Muruga was rendered soulfully.

V.Sanjeev on violin and R.Shankarnarayanan's mirudangam support was very good.
A satisfying concert with no gimmicks.

Shankar has proved where one can stick to tradition and the same time can try some thing differently (sunAdavinOdini)
