Lalgudi Krishnan & Vijayalakshmi @ MFAC 1/1/12
Mridangam - TV Gopalakrishnan
Ghatam V Suresh
I hope someone will put in the song list. I arrived late and didn't make Notes. Sujana Jeevana was reminiscent of the father playing. Beautiful. Alapanas in Kiravani by L Viji and Kanada by LGJR. The aural trap is in the way they structure their kalpana swaras. I read in another thread about the pointlessness of short RTPs. They played a 25 min RTP in Adhi talam in Kannada. It felt as complete as could be. Enough ragas were explored to exploit the 'Sada' start of their pallavi in the ragamalika section. Great start to 2012!

I have very fond memories of attending the New Yer Concerts of Shri L.G.J. in MFAC till 1976; alll the more poignant bec. may be it was the last concert I went to, along with my father in Chennai.

Punarvasu, that is a memory to cherish.
It was a tradition in my family too, to see LGJ and family play with Trichy Sankaran at MFAC on NY day. Then lunch at Woodlands followed by an evening trip to the MMA Sadas. The last one I attended was in 1990 (the year DKJ won the SK) and then I left for the US shortly after...
Despite the terrible acoustics and poor quality seating at MFAC, I can remember some amazing concerts by LGJ. Sometimes he would introduce his new tillanas at the new year concert.
I imagine TVG played today since TS was occupied with his SK/presidential duties at the Academy.

MV, thank you for starting this thread, but please write what you remember of the song list.. Will someone give a complete song list, or at least add to whatever MV may be able to remember?
I agree with you that short rtps feel pointless to me. They are so disappointing!
Ramesh, About the terrible acoustics at the MFAC, I was talking to my Uncle about the this concert and he mentioned to me that there is a parallel tradition of an evening concert with Jesudoss each year, on Jan.1. He tells me that for this concert, Jesudoss brings his own sound equipment to the MFAC. He probably does this for all his concerts..
Wishing everyone a very happy new year with beautiful music!

MV, I know the RTP was brilliant.. I heard about it
Recently, I have been wanting more in several instances .. I suppose I would have wanted more if it was brilliant.. I would be glad to have a mediocre rtp stop sooner
.. I guess "pointless" is a poor choice of a word in speaking of MY response.. I just didn't question it and thought, yeah.. they should be longer. Lalgudi family (extended with students) RTPs are unlikely to be "pointless".

Ranganayaki: I did not know of the Jesudoss tradition.
Interestingly, Unnikrishnan brings his own sound technician, amps and speakers as well! We were just talking about this in some other thread.
MV, I am not sure I know the composer Dakshinamurthy. I am intrigued. Do you know any more about this song/composer?

I think Ellam Shei Vallavanam in keervaNi by MM Dandapani desigar is the composition that MV may be referring , not sure though. I was not there in the concert .This no Lalgudi school plays .
In general in the last year after hearing two concerts I particularly like their RTP for their swiftness in playing swaras, where each sibling takes one and hands it other.

Rajesh... Absolutely right on both counts. I pulled the other D from thin air. The swift swaras in different ragas was exactly what they did with so much finesse.rajeshnat wrote:

Yes I was there from the first note. They started off with a superb Varnam by Lalgudi Sir in Kalyani ( glides were breathtaking ). I thought the hi point or highlights were Suryamurthe in Sowrashtram in a perfect kalapramanam, ( Interestingly the drizzle stopped and Sun God came out cheerfully when they finished this ) LV's Keeravani soaked in bhavam, GJR's short essence of Kamas, ( for the kriti Sujana jeevana the duo maintained two octaves through out giving the effect of vocal ) and the main ragam a scintillating Kanada followed by soothing Sukhiyevvaro and finally the brilliant RTP with lyrics...
SadhA un arul vendinen, yengum nirai Paramporulle.....and the way they played some 20 ragas in quick succession with a swaraksharaporutham on SA and Dha in each of the ragam was amazing! Really a beautiful way to start the NEW YEAR. A royal treat!!!
