Re: Palghat Raghu 1971 concert in "Parvathi", Mysuru
Dear Rasikas,
Palghat Raghu has performed so many times in "Parvathi", Mysuru with all the eminent vocal Vidwans, that we have lost count. Nevertheless we thought we would just invite you (amongst many others posted) to an old April 5, 1971 Concert of his with Vidwans Madurai Somu , Lalgudi Jayaraman and H.P.Ramachar.

Thank you.

What a great vidwan, the late Sri Palghat Raghu.. One can hear this tani avartanam over and over again and one can sense an elation everytime one hears it. Something extraordinary...The way Raghu Sir structures the tani is an art form in itself. The nadam of Kappi mridangam cannot be matched by other mridangams. If there is a tani which has therapeutic benefit, I would say this particular performance stands out as the best. Incredibly beautiful..No words to describe it..Sheer bliss!

Re: Palghat Raghu
Hi all
I once happened to fortunately hear Palghat Raghu Sir play for his grandson Sri Abhishek Raghuram at Coimbatore Rama Navami Festival at R.S.Puram.
I was sitting in the front row and listening to the maestro play.
To be very frank his play on that day sounded like the Great Palghat Mani Iyer himself playing on the stage.
Indeed a very great loss to the Carnatic Music World.
We are fortunate enough to be born in this era and listen to the great Maestro atleast once in our lifetime.
Regards
Krishna

Re: Palghat Raghu
As we approach late Palghat Raghu Sir's birthday (9th Jan), I had a quick look at the web site dedicated to him
http://www.palghatraghu.org/
and the youtube documentary
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ4NiMWAWzc
and I cant help but reminisce on the remarkable life of this legend. What an artist! Very rarely you see people like this now who have dedicated their life to art, who achieved so much and who had so much respect for their gurus. Raghu sir personified everything that an artist should be..There was an invincible aura abt him much like PMI- wonderful stage presence, deep knowledge of music, and in his hands the mridangam sang the music of the main artist. He strode the world of CM as a colossus. There will be none like him. A true Mridanga chakravarthy! Indeed PMI,PSP and PRR represent the mridangam trinity.

Today is the birth anniversary of Palghat Raghu Sir. Though he is not with us, his music remains with us, forever inspiring us. Let us remember him on this day. Please share any rare recordings you may have. Any SSI-Raghu recordings please?

Re: Palghat Raghu
Sri Palghat Raghu was a remarkable musician. Being a student of Mani Iyer is not an easy label, as expectations run sky high. He was also a reticent man, not given to self-promotion. His mridangam play was more cerebral than 'nada' oriented- he had a somewhat heavy stroke. In spite of all these factors, he made an huge impact in almost every concert I have attended of his, and every recording that I have heard. Even for lighter pieces, he had a knack of accompaniment that made a big value addition.
He was also not very demonstrative on stage, but would often draw appreciation from the artistes and the audience. His way of accompanying any pallavi, anupallavi, neraval and swaras was often breath-taking. His two grandsons are worthy to carry forward his name and their demo at Music Academy is worth many viewings on You Tube.

Raschi,
The rendition of Abhishek and Anand is very nice.
Endundi Vedaluthivo is the classic of Alathur Brothers with the accompaniment of Palghat Mani Iyer and Pudukottai Swaminatha Pillai (Kanjira).

Well, Raghu could have kept the beard and passed off as Shree Sadhguru Swamigal in Chennai!

Re: Palghat Raghu
I was listening to a documentary on Palghat Raghu (PR), a famous mrdangist. I was touched by what he spoke.
1. He wanted to learn from Palghat Mani Iyer (PMI). PMI asked him to play. Then, he remarked, ‘There is nothing to teach you. You are so good already.’ PR felt disappointed. But, PMI started teaching him from the next day. An ordinary person would feel elated by PMI’s comment.
2. He cherishes the first award given to him, which was presented by PMI.
3. He said that when he sat beside PMI as his student first time in a concert, he was the proudest man.
4. Once he heard some beats by a local drum player in bhajan in a Palghat village. He worked on it and played in a concert in Chennai. Musicians came and praised it. He said. ‘My guru is the village drummer.’

An amazing tani (check out that bass and gumki!). Whoever placed the mikes must have struck the jackpot. It sounds like both PMI and PSP have become one player.
