A kanyakumari is one of the most versatile artists . Her tutelage with Smt MLV must have got her immense experience and I am assuming with that she has also got the briga embellishments that you get from MLV and her guru GNB .Also with her roots in vizianagaram, I am assuming she has taken a lot of aesthetic play from an extremely accomplished dwaram venkataswamy naidu. :)

But unfortunately she is a kind of vidushi who has taken a choice of perhaps tuning her violin a bit more like saxophone and she always has a dil maangE more attitude for volume. :( . This is the first concert that I am attending in this old sabha @ bangalore which is celebrating its 75th year. Embar Kannan has lovely nadham and the combo of AK -EK had a lot of pluses.

Ak started with a sparkling hamsadhwani.I am not sure if I have ever heard the krithi ,i thought it was abhista varada but still not sure , the swaras were excellent till few sangathis where there was some kind of fast bowing which i thought robbed the faint hum that I was doing in my mind of that wani.

The #2 was a sparkling bowing , I never get bored with MMI patented rAma bhakthi , she played wonderfully and she continued with a gowlai pancharatna , certainly there is a charm when you start successively with T's numbers .

The next I think was in janaranjani , not very sure but it just passed . The first fairly main alapana was in kalyanavasantham. I was assuming it was a tribute to shri LGJ.Both of them alternted in alapana and swaras and it was well done .In particular I liked embar kannan bit more may be the reason was the tone of his violin did have a more natural violin tune.

The best of best was her kamalAptakula , I have heard an occassion before to hear her brindavana saranga pallavi. AK is a really superb vidushi when she plays brindAvana sArangA, the brigas were beautiful and the krithi with swaras was sparkling. With an emotive filler in chandrajyothi ,The main was in harikAmbOdhi. I could not hear that fully and I think she played entarA .I did not hear fully the tani as I had to leave.

Embar kannan played very beautifully. WHile Ak's violin was having a tone that had a touch of sax , embar kannan had a tone that was more resembling a more traditional violin. His anticipation without losing the speed of AK during returns was noteworthy. The percussion team had its pluses and minuses .At times I felt the percussion especially the kanjira was very loud .

If Ak can do atleast two things that would make her concert more enjoyable

1. The volume is definitely on a consistently high side.To an extent I moved in this big hall(rather it looks like a stadium) to a place where volume was bit low and kind of mitigated. But certainly when all four play in tandem the volume is bit pounding in the head

2.Ak perhaps has tuned her violin to have a sound that resembles saxophone. The novelty is there but I certainly missed the divine nadham of a violin which keeps me more hooked.

Her creative spark and control is superb and the concert was embellished with embar kannan violin support.
Overall a very good concert.

Sreeni,
That's Rajesh. My guess is that after travel and a long day at work, he made it to the concert through traffic--all this in one day's time and hurried back to Chennai, I'm sure--because his little daughter wants him to spend all hours he can spare with her!

So the first number is nammamma sharade , which I googled to find out that it was by kanakadasar .

To the best of my knowledge The main was in harikambodhi(not too sure of the krithi, it appeared as entarA nee) ,I am not sure if u are right in saying it as devamruthavarshini(evarani). You can crosscheck .

On a lighter note, many people have to travel to the outskirts of Chennai for work and may find Bangalore venues closer to their place of work ;)

Let alone returning home late because of the commute, you have to be in the Mylapore area for your concerts well in time! Going through traffic again, to reach home :(

I have watched, from quite a distance, Kanyakumari's violin for several decades and she has come a long way. Her training under Dwaram, MC and later MLV have definitely contributed to her present standing. Unfortunately she has been almost exclusively playing "second fiddle" to Kadri Gopalnath continuously for so many years that her violin has started sounding like saxophone ! Since the Sax and accompanying drums drown the violin sound, she has to ask for more and more amplification in order to hear the violin feed back resulting in annoying "noise" to the audience. She should do more solos and accompany various other artists to be noticed by the powers that be. I read recently that she was awarded a life time achievement award by one of the sabhas. If she pays her cards ( in addition to her violin) cleverly she is a candidate for Sangeetha Kalanidhi award soon.

Sundara Rajan,
Yes. I do recall the sweet sounds emanating from Kanyakumari's violin as she played for (and imbibed from) MLV.
Her gift didn't go away. She has star students who carry it on. Yet, why don't we hear that sweetness anymore?

How those sweet strings don't resonate when 'noise' takes over! Some of the best of our percussionists fall a prey to this too :(

A sax can sound sweet too, on its own and by palying along with a melodious violin. However, that's not the case here :(
