Re: Sunday Brunch
The pallavi demo was by Dr.S.Ramanathan, not Dr.N.Ramanathan.
I had a discussion within me after listening to the demo. What is the difference between Pallavi Demo by TRS ( I have heard many) and Dr.SR. In the TRS demo, he handles the subject as if he is teaching students. HE tells how to construct the pallavi, how to embellish it, and how best you can present the same in concerts. Dr.SR in this demo, speaks to the listeners of music about the pallavi concept and he sings the pallavis sung by great vidwans of earlier years. Ettugada pallavis, fast pallavis, short pallavis, - an interesting presentation. Yesterday I tried to up-load it, Some error crept in. Today evening, I will upload.

Thanks CRama. Now I understand what you said about the nature of his RTP lecture demo. Anyone can relate to this and enjoy.
Just a note to non-tamilians, the lecture part of it is in Tamil but I think you will still get something out of it since there is good music there. His explanations are excellent, others can benefit from a translation. I will leave it our translation experts to see if they want to take up the task.
His way of speaking Tamil is so good to hear. Easy colloquial style while at the same time using properly formed words and sentences.
Keerthi, you asked/wondered quite a while back about the currently in vogue practice of arudhi occurring on the beat. He addresses that between 11 to 14 minutes. Spoiler: It does not have to be.

Re: Sunday Brunch
Thanks CRama for the precious upload. This one is a superlative lec-demo; quintessential S.Ramanathan stuff. Notice how the steel-rigour of his scholarly background is combined with a highly accessible aesthetic form. For instance, he doesn't merely give the padam-layam-vinyasam explanation, but underscores that this is a later, creative interpretation of the term, as Bhava-raga-tAla is of Bharata. It was nice to hear the savant sing the pallavi of the krti 'gAnalOla', to even hear a mention of the kRti, which is now near-extinct. His voice is also at its sweetest best.
Vasantakokilam, impressive that you remember something I said long ago, I have a pet theory regarding the tyranny of the arudi not just in pallavi singing; but in the krtis of the classic vAggEyakAras, but it is still in the mid-early embryonic stage.
I have seen/ read and learnt a couple of older pallavis without a discernable arudi, wherein the end of the pallavi-beginning of next Avarta is treated as arudi. Have notated down a few of these pallavis learnt from the lineages of Bidaram Krishnappa, Chittoor S. Pillai and Tiruppamburam. SwaminAtha Pillai.

Re: Sunday Brunch
Keerthi, I am sure you can help me here.
On many occasions, I have felt the RTP comes a bit late-when 65% of the concert is done and dusted. I see a struggle in the singers/accompaniments to bring energy and impact. In such instances, the RTP becomes a bit of a chore.
On some other occasions, the artiste seems to scale a new high in the RTP, a kind of comfort zone. Then the RTP becomes the central part of the concert.
I do enjoy the ragamalika string especially if two artistes alternate ragas etc.
All in all, I feel the RTP will sit uneasily in the repertoire unless it is done as a central piece of the concert and doesn't come when the audience or the musicians are exhausted.
What do you say, sir?

I was blown away by some of the sangathis and gamakas she could bring out on the Veena. Really a great artiste!

Enjoyed Vid. Nirmala Rajasekhar's mohanam very much. Thanks Rsachi.
I guess this is the gAyaki bANi. Nirmala Rajasekhar's playing brought out the words of the composition so clearly ( of course, that only works when I know the song )

Yes, VKM, she has a special way to modulate the gamakas and notes into words.
I know of very few vainikas who can produce those gamakas in the descent so effortlessly. She also played some tricky phrases up to the highest Pa.
About knowing the words, surely it helps us mere mortals of listeners! Interestingly this composition itself seems to my mind a medley of musical ideas from many famous Mohana compositions.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Dear rasikas,
I recently heard snatches of an excellent Veena recital on Bangalore AIR 100.1 FM on a Friday morning as I was getting ready to go to work. I felt I should listen to the entire concert, and was very glad I was able to access a recording. It is archived here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/86shqh38iekgs ... ct2013.m4a
The concert was of Vid. Ashwin Anand, a young Veena player undergoing advanced training under Vid. Vedavalli. I know he has performed many concerts in Chennai also. Here is an artiste who has performed with considerable emotive content, great manodharma and tonal excellence in this live radio broadcast.
After Srivaralakshmi and Aparadhamula, he expounds a wonderful Saveri (Shankari Shankuru). The fourth item is Jagadoddharana.
Happy Sunday Brunch!!!!!

Thanks so much for posting this! Vittal Rangan moved me so much with his Kharaharapriya alapanai for a Isai Mazhalai program. The video used to be on YouTube but it seems to have been removed or unlisted.B. Viitala Rangan's violin concert a few days ago on AIR 100.1 FM:

Just listening to the Kumudakriya alapanai - the tambura/shruti box is emanating N3 frequency - goes well with the mood of the raga. Of course Vittala's raga essays are delightfully melodic and emotive with a lot of sowkhyam.

Re: Sunday Brunch
Hi folks,
Here is an MDR classic I was able to unearth when I was looking for something else altogether.
http://bit.ly/MDRClassics
It has a great Darbar, the wonderful swarajathi in Bhairavi like what only MDR can sing, a sparkling Begada like a roar in the deep ocean, and then Paripalaya.
This cassette didn't have much markings or even complete tracks, but the 95% or so I have salvaged is more than worth a listen. And I deduce, using some logic, that the accompanists are LGJ and UKS!!!
Please listen and tell me what you think. I have also arranged for a bit of rain in Bangalore and Chennai so you stay indoors.
Happy listening

RSachi - Thanks a lot for the MDR treat.
I'd missed Sanjay earlier this week and was looking forward to TNS and TMK concerts today. Unfortunately both vidwans are indisposed and have 'kept away' like the rain.
Got one Krishna concert though today - TNSKrishna stood in admirably for his illustrious father. Amrutha Venkatesh will sing in place of TMK this evening.

Re: Sunday Brunch
Have got a good dose of Keeravaani of late, including today's 100.1 FM broadcasting a fine Kaligiyunte by Maharajapuram Ramachandran.
Are you crazy about Keeravaani? I know many who are. But I am not one of them.
In fact I have strong feelings on this subject. I feel Keeravaani is like a manifesto left incomplete. It is a series of questions asked but with no answers.
What they call closure. I feel all art -in India, especially- is about closure, completion. However I find Keeravaani, with its preponderance of Ni and Ma, with almost all its phrases ending with a question mark, leaves me without an answer. It is a raga in search of its own destiny. It has no closure.
What do you think, sir? madam?
Here is a feast of Keeravaani, played brilliantly by Shahid Pervez, and rounded off with an RTP by the one and only Sanjay.
Please listen over a longish Sunday brunch and come back to me.
It is important we get closure on this subject!!!!
http://bit.ly/Keeravani
Here is a definitive Keeravaani song by Saint Thayagaraja, He is the ultimate master in choosing the right raga for the right mood. See his questions:

Folks
I strongly recommend you listen to this concert:
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 01#p252266
I heard it and found Amrutha absolutely wonderful. The recording is very good too. She does a really fine job of Kedara and then does a fabulous Kalyani. Her manodharma is really DIFFERENT.
I found Venu took time to warm up a bit but Sudhindra was thoroughly enjoying himself.
PS: Will hear the rest tomorrow

Main course Kalyani. Lots of vadams in the form of Sudhindra's solos. A cute Charukeshi RTP. Some tongue-tickling 'Ramakrishnaru', an offbeat BhAgyAdA and then the sparkling KDNKTHLM.

Re: Sunday Brunch
For the brunch today, my recommendation is that you browse the various archived concerts of Parivadini. They have done a commendable job of covering multiple venues and talented artistes. It is a video treat.
A small observation. I heard some really talented lady artistes in these webcasts. Unfortunately I found the mridangam was often insensitive and intrusive to the mood of the main artiste. I feel the younger more talented mridangam vidwans should make a special effort to rein themselves in for female vocalists and when accompanying more sensitive music.

Many thanks for your word of encouragement and support.Rsachi wrote:A small observation. I heard some really talented lady artistes in these webcasts. Unfortunately I found the mridangam was often insensitive and intrusive to the mood of the main artiste.
We have made note of this observation, currently we do not take the audio leads directly onto our PC and the idea is to mimic the actual kutcheri environment(you will hear the balaey's, the besh's and the argument whether it was Natta Kurinji or Hussaini!). If in the future we do decide to have our own sound mixer for balancing we will surely take care of this.
Thanks again for your support.

Re: Sunday Brunch
This note is not meant to be disrespectful to any of the great musicians of our world, but there was a time in the 60s and 70's, when the cognoscenti of the Sitar world in Bengal thought that Nikhil Banerjee was the real deal! There was that belief that he was not recognized as much for his virtuosity as his other compatriot because he would not chase anything or cultivate the necessities towards a famed path. [Experiences of one growing up in Kolkata].
Anyway, the happiness is in stopping one's mental chatter and in listening to such elegantly plucked strains.

also a great tip for improving audio quality playback when you listen to music on Chrome web browser:

Prof Ramaratnam of Mysore university is well known to many as a teacher and author of textbooks in music. But I have not come across too many concerts of his. I am glad to share here a full concert in the company of Vid M Chandrasekharan and Vellore Ramabhadran :

I bought a DVD of the movie Nandanar 1942 at Tic Tac, Mission Road, Pondicherry, yesterday. A lovely movie, and what splendid acting, and singing by Sri MM Dandapani Desikar! I had heard some of these songs sung by Carnatic musicians. I tell you, please hear the original- it's an eye opener:

If the link doesn't work please search for Playlists named Nandanar on YouTube. The best one has 12 songs.
Happy Sunday brunch!
