What do musicians talk about among other musicians

Post by vasanthakokilam »

This is addressed to musician members of our forum. You see us rasikas talk about music all the time. There are quite a big range in how we relate to ragas, compositions and talas. What we focus on RTPs etc.

What do you musicians talk about when you are amongst other musicians? I mean related to music. ( and not gossip, politics, games etc. ) Since you know both sides, you can compare and contrast. May be what we rasikas think as astonishing is just too normal for you, may be what we do not even pay attention to is important to you and you notice them and that figures in your discussions etc.

I doubt if musicians come together they will talk about music. How many of us talk about our job when we meet our friends. It is more like "peethikkal" - self boasting kind. There are many other things they will talk about other than music.

Whatever little I have known:
About mundane items like travel logistics, about concert venues, best/worst recent experiences of recent concert arrangements or tours
..about fellow musicians like accompanists....
Family matters like kids, parents etc.
Items of universal interest like local politics, law and order, water problems, weather etc.
Occasionally about some veteran musician or teacher who can help out in some obscure lyrics/compositions ..
Compliments to each other on recent awards/famously reviewed or reported concerts...
Any engagements they will both take part in.

Taboo subjects include rival musicians where mutual power equations are uncertain or political.

Of course! Isn't there a story about DKJ and Vijay Siva tracking a key international match which India won, through a concert?
I know a top cardiac surgeon who watches all matches in the theatre. And one who operates only while listening to hard rock!

Traffic woes in chennai which makes it difficult to reach concert halls on time. Unfair criticisms in newspapers including rasikas.org. who will be the next sangitha kalanidhi, padmashri awardee, summer vacation plans :-)

I cannot exactly tell what all our great musicians talk about as I, unfortunately, did never think that this is of that important.

But, I can exactly tell that no musician on earth ever talks or discusses about any novel methods of teaching as everybody thinks that his/her system of teaching is only the best of all irrespective of the end-results, that himself/herself as the best teacher of all and that his/her methods are only the best on earth. That is why, in respect of our great music, in all the music-institutions and all music-departments of all the universities on the globe all those teachers very carefully planned not to have any kind of academic supervision which conveniently facilitates them to do anything as they like and get on. For example in all 35 years of my Govt. service as a teacher there was not even a single academic inspection. Is not our system the only greatest one on earth? amsharma

Is it musicians talking with themselves or talking by writing...

We ask questions to musicians and reply also as musicians...

Great input from all. Thanks.

Varsha, of course we want you to share your experiences. This thread may not provide the right focus for it, I have opened a separate thread for it: http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=23411

I do not mean to guide the conversation too much as the OP, but my intention is to know the 'musicians' musical mind as a rasika' which exhibits itself in conversations with other musicians. I am saying 'with other musicians' because the wavelength will be more or less the same compared to when they talk to non-musician rasikas.

During the '50s and '60s, Ananda Vikatan or Kalki (I forget exactly which, probably the former), ran a very popular and humorous series entitled "Ivargal Sanditthal", featuring in the writer's imagination, two leading musicians sitting together to have a chinwag over coffee. The weekly feature, specially brought out during the music season, was brilliantly written, with great wit and understanding of Carnatic music, its purveyors and its flavour. Written in Tamil of course, which made it all the more enjoyable. Thus you had Semmangudi shooting the breeze with GNB, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer with Ariyakkudi, Palghat Mani Iyer with Pazhani Subbudu and many more. I might be getting the exact cast of characters wrong, but you get my drift.

If some one can get hold of these gems, if they are still preserved on the net or archived elsewhere, it would be fantastic. It addresses the subject of this thread in a far more engaging and entertaining way, than the present crop of contributors have been able to achieve. Maybe one of our fellow rasikas can get inspired and take a stab at pitting some of our top stars against, or perhaps with, each other - in a fictional world, naturally.

Sri Pasupathi is your best bet here! He may even have them in his blog already.

Sachi...Karthick heard you !!!
I have always lived with the feeling that the music of the musician is his way of conversing with the world.
One may have never met Madurai Mani Iyer , but his Ethaneyo Piravi nerval for Thookiya Thiruvadi gives us a glimpse into the workings of his mind.
See what Karthink does in clip 2 at 4.40 .He could have been an Englishman who thought of the Punch magazine first ! Priceless bit of wit.
Or when once ,in a seemingly endless round of thamboora cekkoni at the neraval , Somu switches to sruthi koncha cekkoni - A very empathy-loaded exchange of thoughts with Chandru.
Or what about Embaars playing .I can hear streaks of conversation between MLV and Kanyakumari through his playing...
More fun as we move along.

I am fully with Varsha. Musicians who live and sleep in music always converse with music. They will see music in everything they listen to. It does not matter what language either.
