I am sorry I just have to gush about this concert:). please excuse my lyrical excess.
When I entered I overheard the custodians of the auditorium telling the organizer that fireworks during the concert(if any) have to follow the state’s fire code. I was chuckling to myself sanjay and fire-works! yep, there was one of a kind, somewhat a subdued one. What can you expect when he sings ananda bhairavi, charukesi, kalyani and nattakurinji. 

Sanjay opened the program with the infrequently performed varnam, in Darbar. Then came his trademark pallandu pallandu pallAyirathandu in nattai.
With an ascetic approach sanjay explored ananda bhairavi, revealing it’s breadth and shape demonstrating his intellectual depth, qualities matched by the emphatic playing by Varadarajan in responding to his nuances. As i was optimistically hoping, came Swathi Thirunal’s utsavaprabandha Kirtanai in Malayalam, Andolika vahane at a stately pace, studded with telling details of the procession making a moving case for the ruminations of the composer while retaining its lyrical majesty and in his sensitive interpretation it came to life grand culminating with swarams with clinical clarity with varadarajan and venkatesh sharing his sensitivity in playing with the rhythmic elements.
Next he sketched charukesi with inward reflection and dredged the nugget of PD, 'Onde manadhalli bhajisa vAkdeviya' out of semi-obscurity like a calm rumination and he shaped the pensive spans of the text ‘Onde manadhalli bhajisi vAkdEviya’ with textural intricacy in a searching way with Varadarajan’s and venkatesh’s nourishing partnership…
Kalyani - opened with a subdued hum from which melodic fragments emerged with a deft combination of playfulness and virtuosity displaying his adventurous spirit. Needu charana emerged imparting emotional weight to every word. Then sanjay excavated out the composer’s reverie with improvisatory flair at ‘O jagath janani OmkAra rUpiNi kalyani’ bringing lyrical refinement with impeccable intonation to every phrase followed by Venkatesh’s tani where he played with impressive technical command and improvisatory flair with one of the fastest/softest fingers in the industry…
Then he dipped into the brooding 'Netrandhi nErathilE' distilling the dynamics of the restless mind with a passionate spontaneity conveying the despair of the nayika…
And then the night’s/tour’s masterpiece RTP -
Nattakurinji uncurled to full dramatic effect making each note register while subtleties loomed while digging out it’s ethereal colorings … he gave it his all and Varadarajan offered a countermelody with melting warmth. The thanam unfolded at somewhat a restrained tempo with enigmatic tension dissipating and accumulating with calm intensity and subtle gradations that kept the music gliding along morphing from a hushed phase into a rhythmically charged one with palpable vigor and exacting deliberation creating a spatial effect… such magic has become a commonplace…and at this juncture of transcendence, clapping seemed like a sacrilege… Yep, it was one organic nattakurinji. (no ragamalika in thanam.:))Then with his voice swelling with an enveloping intensity it was kind of commingling of invoking his surrender through melody and the pensive text, ’ManathAl unnai ninaithAl dhinam thudhithAl vandaruLUm senthamizh vANiyE, silayAi sirpa vadivAi sindanai chudarAi vandarUL pOzhiyUm thAyE' with exacting attention to rhythm in kanda triputa with many iterations in his extended flights linking together phrases strengthening the text’s emotional punch like an eloquent prayer with swarams in aberi and begada and he came a full circle back to nattakurinji with the violin and the mridangam blending with verve in bringing down the house in their collective improvisation. And the absorbing concert ended with the endearingly poignant viruttam in kamas followed by Sivan’s waltzy rhythmic ‘ThiruvaLar mayilayin iraivanin adipaNi’ winning a rousing ovation.

They have been performing for almost four hours with barely a pause and it seemed as if they could happily keep going. And the authentic chemistry between the trio - I still can’t get out of the behag from the previous concert and how Sanjay picked from Varadarajan some TRS ish swarams and how the three played off of each other with exuberance. It is interesting how Sanjay draws upon different musical styles kindling thoughts of masters of yesteryear and makes into his own distinctive voice…

Kedharam,
I was waiting for this! Glad that you could make it to three concerts of the trio in two weekends!

How I wish 'The Man in White' had made it to the Boston concert too! Lost a chance of meeting you in person :( Though it is some distance for us, we did go to Andover to hear Sanjay.

I haven't had much time to write about it, and believe me, I'm still very much in the mood that was created at the Chinmaya Center.

So, Sanjay sang ennaDu jUtunO? When he sang siddhi vinAyakanE in Boston, I was thinking, what two different kind of songs they are, in the same rAgA (and you know that there are those who would call a rAgA like this limited, and not worth it, when a gallery of the traditional rAgAs are there :( Give credit to Sanjay for making these rAgAs familiar to us with conviction and confidence. Personally, I have gained much by listening to his RTPs. chitrAmbari that night appeared all unknown to me, intriguing me, my trying to figure out her beauty. Then in the rAgamAlikA tAnam came gAnamurti and I said, 'wait a minute, you were a stranger to me too, and after hearing Sanjay's RTP nearly ten years ago, how familiar and friendly you have become!'

Wish you were there. We could have met, but saw a few other fans, all converging from long distances. I even missed an old friend who lives in Jersey:( She called me in the morning and said she didn't see me either, but came to know from her friend about my being there :(

Was it ondE manadali?

arasi, Sanjay sang as 'Onde manadhalli bhajisa vAkdeviya',

According to the book, 'Sri purandaradasara sangeerthanekalu', it is "Onde manadhi bhajisa vAkdeviya" in charukesi.

My son and I drove 2 hours from Pennsylvania to get to this concert as this was our only chance to hear him this year and we got really lucky! I cannot even dream of matching the eloquence of the OP above but there were a few points I would like to add. I felt the average age of the audience was younger than usual with a lot of teenagers in the crowd illustrating the popularity of Sanjay with the upcoming generation. There was something earlier in the concert which seemed to bother Sanjay and he was seen talking to the organizer but it was soon forgotten as the concert started to peak. Though I post infrequently,I lurk in these forums regularly and have come across discussions about Sanjay sticking to SV and NV only for accompaniment.I have heard 4 concerts in the last 4 years of the trio and I cannot see a reason for him to change anything just for the sake of change. The chemistry is fabulous amongst them.Shri Neyveli Venkatesh always appears awestruck during alapanas and doesn't take his eyes off SS. I cannot picture any other violinist with the knowledge or skill who can consistently keep up with Sanjay's brigas and swaras and embellish them even further without being overpowering or intrusive.Incidentally I heard a violin duet of the lalgudi siblings the day before in Philadelphia and they had Nattakurinji for their RTP also!

Nice of you to write 3 reviews from east coast in succession, Thanks . I like the list especially with a nattaikurinji pallavi and a kalyani with that line o jagath janani omkarini neraval line (not a big fan of this ragam but this neraval and krithi is awesome)

gs1968,
Good to have your post. As we did, you drove some distance, that too with your young son (school and workday in the morning too!).

Your son, and many other youngsters you saw at the concert are a good thing for CM's future--a needed change from seeing mainly the senior lot like us in halls.

Sanjay's spring quartet in the US is a hopeful sign for the health of CM in the years to come.

Rajesh,
I haven't heard that kalyANi song in ages! It was popular when I was a child.

Arasi, as I read your post, I have Smt. MSS' voice soaring as she brings both the dEvi, and the rAgam alive through that same phrase for nereval, ringing in my ears. :)

Sounds like a very nice concert, thanks Kedharam for the detailed review.. Arasi, you are everywhere! How do you do it!!

I was more than tempted to go to this one too, but was forced to act reasonable.

1968, there weren't so many teenagers at Richmond, as far as i could tell. There were some very young kids, a couple of teenagers, and mostly people in their 40s and 50s.

By a wiggle of my nose, Ranganayaki :) Really, Kedharam is the one to be admired for that.

I haven't been to any concerts in years in the US. Distances, even short ones matter. That's why I binge when I go to India (i'm not reasonable at all!). Of course, Cleveland the past few years has been my joy, appearing before me on my laptop, the tip of my fingers making it all happen.

We have traveled miles for a concert, across states--adu andak kAlam...
