An aural feast - thanks indeed!

I've read that Swapnasundari learnt padams from Muktamma. Came across this youtube link of her singing and performing abhinaya to Bhamaro. Sadly, it's a truncated recording:

rajeshnat, I am sorry I could not reply to your query as I was out of station.

The tradition of alternate swara-sahitya singing was started by Subbraya Sastri and his son Annasami Sastri. That was followed by their disciples Kamakshi and Sundara (grandmother and mother, respectively, of Dhanammal). It was followed by Dhanammal and her sister Rupavati, then by Dhanammal's daughters Rajalakshmi-Lakshmiratnam and Jayammal-Kamakshi. It was continued by Brinda-Muktha. According to their cousin T.Sankaran, this kind of alternating helped them to take a breath in the middle without anyone noticing it. The continuity would be maintained and it was a different kind of beauty which was not to be heard from any other musician.

In Shyama Sastri, Subbaraya Sastri kritis which had swara sahityas, Brinda would sing the sahityam after the anupallavi whereas Muktha would sing the swarams. And vice-versa after the charanam. They also sang likewise in the pUrvikalyANi song of Tiruvarur Ramaswami Pilai, ekkAlathilum and the aTANA song of Mysore Sadasiva Rao, vAchAmagOcharuNDani. It requires tremendous concentration and discipline to do this, as we found out when Mukthamma taught us marivErE gati, O jagadambA, pAlinchu kAmAkShi, durusugA, ninnu sEvinchina, janani ninuvinA, srI kAmAkShi, inkevarunnAru etc. We started doing this on our own with srI kAmAkShi (vasantA) in front of Mukthamma. And to get our alternating right even in that simple swara-sahityam was none too easy. The thrill that is felt when both of them sing together such songs is something different and cannot be replicated.

Since marivErE has been uploaded, I'll see what other swara-sahitya songs I have and upload them.

The system of singing swarams and sahithyams simultaneously by two different singers was done by Chembai also. Those who are familiar with his concerts will remember- The varnams in Kambodi and Sankarabharanam - he used to sing as pada varnams. Means he will also sing sahithyam for chitttaswaram and ettugada swarams. He will sing the swaram and his sishyas ( mostly Jaya Vijaya ) will sing the sahithyam. But it has to be accepted that in similar cases, clarity of both swaram and sahithyam will be lost. In the case of Chembai, since his voice was very powerful and the sishyas sang slighly in subdued tone, it could register well with the listners. Not so in the case of B-M music.

Awesome Reetigaula RaviSri. To learn that this is a more than 50 year old recording preserved by you is overwhelming as much as the alternating swara-sahitya is. Thrilling indeed. The best Janani Ninnuvina I have ever heard.

Well said, CRama. You have hit the nail on the head. What is so awesome about this Janani Ninuvina? The rendition is quite ordinary. I have heard fabulous renditions of this kriti from Semmangudi, MLV, Bombay Sisters and many others. As for the simultaneous singing of swaram and sahityam it is no big deal and this sounds ordinary and confusing too. The weeping quality is very much discernible and has been successfully brought by them from the padam to the kriti arena.

The dilemma of the critic has always been that if he knows enough to speak with authority, he also knows too much making him unfit to speak with detachment

“On one occasion, she stopped singing ‘varalai’ and touched upon ‘ranjani’ a few minutes. Then she said ‘ranjani’ could be tried if we could not explore the greatness of ‘varalai,’” said Mr. Janakiraman, adding that she should not just be admired, but adored.
Emphasis mine!

Isn't that supposed to be Varali? Or am I mistaken?

Another famous Hindu typo :) Very special correspondant indeed!

In the article in the Hindu, http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tam ... 091413.ece, S. Neelakantan, son of later violin maestro Thiruvalangadu Sundaresa Iyer, said Ramnad Krishnan and Thiruvavaduthurai Rajarathinam Pillai were the two musicians who absorbed the Dhanammal school style of music and popularised it through their own renderings. “She used to sing between seven and nine in the evening and there would be hardly a dozen people. Who can equal her ‘padams’ and ‘javalis’ in ‘kalyani,’ ‘bhairavi,’ ‘gowlibandhu,’ ‘begada,’ ‘saveri,’ ‘sahana’ and ‘paras,’” he said.
Prof S.R. Janakiraman, a student of Brinda, said “joints and couplings” were part and parcel of her music and she maintained continuity without a break.

If stalwarts like T.N.Rajarathnam and Ramnad Krishnan wanted to emulate the Dhanammal School there should have been something quality in it which was not available with the music greats of those days. Many stalwarts of the day who were instrumental in creating the present day modern concert style of CM had only praise for the music of TNR. I remember to have read that MSS had learnt padams from the members of Dhanammal school. Thirukkodikkal Krishna Iyer whose was held in great respect by the music community was a great fan of Dhanammal . Musiri, as the principal of CCKM kenw the importance of this tradition and valued it very much . That was why he chose Brinda and Thiruppamburam Swaminatha Pillai , both with no spectacular concert career, as teachers in CCKM event though many of the concert successful teachers of the modern concert style were running after him.

It is unfortunate people are attracted more to a brilliant cut Zircon than an ancient cut real Golkonda diamond.

The "joints and couplings" term is a loose translation of B and M's own pithy expression--"Odukkal and Chedukkal!!.YES it is true MSS,SSI besides RK took lessons from Band M.

One of SSI's Trivandrum Academy Student--herself a gReat disciple/teacher told me this quote from SII:

When teaching the Padams himself to her,he would say in Tamil Anda Pommanatti kitte kaal le vizhundu katthindrukken--onnaiyum mathaama Paadungo--sondha sarakkai chekkadengo"--Translation: I have falln at the feet of that Woman and learnt these padams--Please do not make changes or insert your own karpanais--the tradition has to be preserved.

SSI was fully supportive of Band M's stand on this issue although many of his detractors felt that he had not used his influence with the Institutions like MA,Govt of India,to gain the legetimate recognition for the School.I know for a fact he tried and was responsible for moving them in the fifties in MA from the 9 P.M. slot to the 5 P.M. slot(when the slots were few and the senior musicians vying for the same were MANY! and when the gate colections for the 5 P.M. slot was lower for B and M those days.

Like Shivadasan,I am an unalloyed admirer of the whole DhaNAMMAL FAMILY WITH WHOM MY FAMILY HAS INTERACTED many a times and been at the receiving end of the family's taunts(justified) that they have not been properly recognized by the CM crowd. Yet in their later years they softened their stance and Mukthamma taught some of her rare gems--one of the beneficiaries was my cousin living in Bombay--she told me on my recent visit to Mumbai as to how in her last visit to Mumbaii Mukthamma -- despite her frail health --squatted on the floor despite sore knees(she was 90 or so I believe and taught her a rare padam--I forgot the name of the padam or the raga--I will get it.
MY POINT: While their pet peeves may have inhibited their willingness to share, later on they did not stint teching to students who were dedicated and who they believed would continue their tradition. One of our forumites based in Baltimore is the proud recipient of these gems and while a student he recently spent hours in Mumbai learning from my cousin some of these padams. One of these days I will get him to write more about these items!!

VKailasam,

Isn't it Vegavahini sitting in the middle?
I remember her singing away when she was that age. She was an active child, and this other child thought, 'what an exotic name!' and was told that it was the name of a rAgA. The way she was a live wire, I thought that the name suited her very well!

MUSICAL ANECDOTES ABOUT ARTIS..............--BRINDA--MUKTHA

Anecdotes about Musicians-

14.Smt.Brinda (1912--1996) Smt. Muktha (1914--2007)

Inline image 1

Brinda and Muktha sang as a duo for thirty years and parted company in the 1960s.Their ancestors Papammal and Kamakshi were dancers and Kamakshi was student of Subbaraya Sastry ,son of Syama Sastry. Kamakshi’s adopted daughter had nine children among whom was the famed Veena Dhanammal, a doyen of Carnatic music. She had four daughters, the last of whom was Kamakshi.

***********************************************

Veena Dhanammal’s house was a bee hive of artists. The four daughters paired off and sang as duos titled “Dhanam Daughters”. Kamakshi and her husband Sundararaja Iyengar raised their children, The daughters carried on the music tradition while two sons became flautist and percussionist. A cousin Sankaran served in All India Radio and was a music historian.

******************************************

Brinda was born in 1912 and Muktha in 1914.Mother Kamakshi taught them music. They were sent to Kanchipuram Naina Pillai—who had a strict training schedule. Brinda was quick to learn. Muktha who was physically weak was allowed to strum the tambura but she learnt music by listening . She sat like a little “ pilayarkutti” as Brinda described her and aurally all the kritis taught to her sister. Later Naina Pillai expressed regret at having treated her as inferior.

********************************************

Veena Dhanammal had four daughters all distinguished musicians. Rajalakshmi and Lakshmirathnam sang in tandem. The third daughter Jayammal was the mother of the famous dancer Balasaraswathi. The youngest daughter Kamakshi had three daughters and two sons. The eldest was Brinda and the second Muktha. Kamakshi’s ambition was to make Brinda a great singer.

***********************************

Dhanammal taught the sisters a few songs, some padams and javalis. She taught them to play veena but the family was keen that they should be singers. The girls had their debut at the Jagannatha Bhakta Samaj in Egmore. The Brinda Muktha combine was launched with the violin being played by their sister Abhiramasundari, a disciple of Papa Venkataramiah.

***************************************

The sisters increased their repertoire by learning Viashnava Janato, Tiruppugazh and Thevarams. They specialized in padams and javalis. The Music Academy provided them good concert opportunities. Brinda started giving tuitions, Brinda had two sons and a daughter while Muktha had one daughter. Brinda taught Semmangudi padams and javalis. She would insist that he sit down cross-legged in front of her and learn in the traditional manner. M S and Ramnad Krishnan also learnt from Brinda. Brinda has to her credit a book of javalis with notations published by the Music Academy.
*****************************************
The sisters never released commercial recordings. Both were graded artists of All India Radio. Brinda taught music at the Central College of Karnatak Music till 1970. The sisters split in 1965 over AIR remuneration being hiked for Brinda but not for Muktha and Brinda not taking up her sister’s case with the authorities.

*********************************************
R.Ranga Ramanuja Iyengar, an admirer of Dhanammal had a life size statue of the old lady with her veena which he worshipped in his house at Sait colony, Egmore. When he moved to US he sold his house and Muktha arranged to have the statue picked up and brought to her own home. In later years when her own bungalow made way for flats, she had the statue enshrined in the corridor of her flat and there it remains to this day.

**************************************************************************

Awards came to Brinda in plenty. She was given the Sangit Natak Akademi Award in 1965—Muktha got it seven years later. Sangita Kalanidhi was conferred on Brinda in 1976. In 1988, Dhanammal’s fiftieth death anniversary, the sisters were persuaded to sing together after a gap of 23 years.

Brindamma - a legend who showed through personal example that one could have a great career spanning over 75 years without compromising an iota on one's value systems and convictions. To paraphrase what she said in her Sangita Kalanidhi acceptance speech, "One must always pursue the best possible music, no matter what the stage is; one should not just be a merchant of music or a master of mediocrity and blame it on audience tastes."

Is some kind of race on to write dense prose?

Scratching my head on some phrases " majestic instancy", "sruti alignment was monolithic", "songs defined an entire architectonic of stress" and the hyperbole "Her music advocated not the expression of personality but the extinction of it. This was classicism of the highest order. If Brinda sang Purvikalyani, there was no Brinda there but only Purvikalyani".

If Brinda were to read this she may ROTFL herself.

Or this:

"Brinda’s elaboration of the raga was deceptively predatory. The more she plundered from the raga, the more it yielded to her. She was not a hatchet predator, she worked with a prising knife, and systematically and with meticulous delicacy took out the precious stones, one by one, and held them to your view and wonderment. She did not strike you speechless by the riches of the horde; she rendered you quiet by the plentitude (sic) of the separate gems."

Terms like "predatory", "plunder", and "hatchet" suggest that someone or something is being oppressed/exploited/harassed. I wonder who the author had in mind.

hello rasikas,

As rasika we don't have many recordings of respected brinda muktha duo as like other musicians at that time.
(though we have got, its till a handful)
i feel there repertoire should not be gone unnoticed by the upcoming generation.
so i thought we should collect all possible recordings from their repertoire from the duo and their student community.
like
>padam javalis(no doubt that this was the property of brinda muktha duo and their family too)
(for that instance padam javalis is itself a bigger subject)
>rare krithis of dikshithar.
>also rare krithis from shyama shastri (as their family members were direct disciples of SS school)
>and many compositions from contemporary composers of those times.

if any like minded people take initiatives with me.
i can help as much possible

happy to hear the ninnu juchi-punnagavarali padam by T brinda ma.
(the clipping of song can be heard only with sensitive ears for just 5-10 sec,
which comes in the movie scene, wherein the hero is hearing to radio program)
no idea about the movie name.
