And may I recommend Shri Coolkarni's name for this award. Based on what little I know of the work he has done, I feel he certainly deserves this recognition.

Dear Jayaram
Since I have seconded DRS's nomination, I reckon all my votes also will go to him...

On a more serious note , This forum has already awarded me with a composition -that was embarassing enough.

I have always believed that the real purpose of awards(and especially true of this one) is to temporarily heighten the awareness of something that was already there , for a better understanding or appreciation.
What I have to offer....we have already seen its limits.
But we are just beginning to see what DRS has to offer ---
(like many others who may be in the race either now or in the coming years)..
So I take permission from you to withdraw....

well said coolkarNi!

A diamond has to be cut and polished;
if the same is attempted on the rose it will perish !
DRS is a diamond to be appreciated and decorated and
you are the flower to be adored and worshipped!

We need you both!

Sorry, didn't realize DRS was already a nominee. Perhaps Coolji can be chosen for next year. (And hopefully we will have the 'unknown gems' sabha up and running by then...)

I am hitting the url http://www.sangeethamshare.org/ . The site is not working. Can you come up with first a set of nominations .

I can think of 5 equally deserving folks .They are 1.DRS 2. kulkarni 3.srkris 4. cmlover
5. lakshman . If I am shown a knife and asked to select only one , I would nominate Lakshman for the inaugral award for co creating the karnatik.com

rajesh - try http://www.sangeethapriya.org/ instead

I agree, we have quite a few deserving candidates. However, it would make sense for us to nominate a 'consensus' person if possible. Will help focus our votes and perhaps increase the chance of an awardee from our midst.

What do you all say?

The one person I somewhat knew about before I arrived at rasikas.org is Lakshman. His book on kritis is an excellent reference for rasikas.

I have heard a lot about Lakshman's works - could you (or another member :) ) tell me how I might purchase a copy?

I have always believed that the real purpose of awards(and especially true of this one) is to temporarily heighten the awareness of something that was already there , for a better understanding or appreciation.
And this, Coolji, you have amply suceeded. What I am writing is not just based on my experience, but , I am sure, on behalf of several others, who feel pretty much the same. Till a couple of years ago I was just an average rasika- very average- if you can understand what I mean. Not too knowledgable, swimming around in a rather closed circuit of Maharajapurams,MSs and the likes. Not coming from musically enlightned family meant that audio collections at home were also pretty much limited.

Then I stumbled onto the world of online carnatic music (Sangeetham BBoard initially) and I marvelled at the passion with which rasikas would discuss, debate and argue about the smallest point. New horizons began to appear for me. Then came a blessed soul- Sri Raju Asokan who quite literally showered us with musical gems from his treasure troves. And Sri Kulkarni- another blessed soul- took over from where Sri Raju left (is he operating somewhere incognito?) and continues till date.

Their actions amazed on two counts-(1) That a person could have such a vast amount of musical recordings in his collection and (2) so selflessly and liberally share them with the rest of the folks. .

Their actions sparked many more rasikas to dig into their personal collections and upload some of their stuff for the rest of us to enjoy.

Those were unbelievable days.....What are you listening now? running into several threads each being flooded with concert after concert.... GNB, SSI, KVN....Voices of the past masters being brought alive..... It was a magical experience.

And amidst all this uploading and downloading, something else was also happening. The rasika in me began to evolve (Coolji- aren't you happy?) A more, matured, knowledgable approach to listening. A depth, an understanding.... a tranformation from a listener into a rasika. I can't quite put it into words...

And when the subsequent months were fraught with problems and emotional tension, into such a music I found refuge. In the megabytes of music which I had downloaded, I sought solace.

And this is where, I would like express my heartfelt thanks to you- Kulkarniji. You were the first one (one I encountered at least) to give importance to the rasika - Not a high handed puritan's approach, but a more practical man-on-the-street appraoch

Your generosity has enabled even my family members to be favourably disposed towards carnatic music . Now walking into a music store and wanting to buy a couple of cassettes doesn't require so much convincing. :)

Perhaps you may or may not win any award, perhaps you may choose to stay away from the limelight- but if elevating a few people to sincerely appreciate music gives you any satisfation, you can rest content.

I am flattered.
What you are seeing and experiencing is the power of technology , applied with some common sense. As I never tire of saying , I am only the face of a very dedicated and elaborate network-
And yes I was not being humble , while I opted out.I know the limits of a talent , which is basically reflective in nature.Unlike Manuel Santana who rose from being a Ball boy to a Wimbledon Champion, I shall always remain a Ball Boy.
But then Rasiaks.org is evolving so beautifully with all kinds of contributions. And that is what is so heartening ! Your post is further evidence that this process is irreversible.
And just for the records sake I reproduce the reasons that I gave while seconding the nomination..
At a time when most feel that Carnatic Music is at Cross roads , DRS (as he is fondly known) represents the ideal balance between the past and ther future.
GK Chesterton , in one of his memorable essays ,eulogised the metaphor of the Cross.
To his miind , the centre of the cross represented a confict , but the glory of the Cross was, in its ability to evolve in all four directions , in a magnificent Hope..
With my limited personal interactions with DRS,, I have come to believe that his work is a result of a conflict at the Core - A conflict which understands the glory of a great immediate past and the need to sensitise the current generation and educate it without being condescending.
The entire list of achievements -detailed by cmlover - are ample testimony o this aspect of the contribution of DRS.

Hence I whole heartedly second this nomination.
So there it is you see.
And Yes Raju Asokan is still around , though , like the Pope ,he prefers to work through his " Cool "Ministers .

And here is something to soothe your nerves , the next time you need it.

the best thing will be to make a list of nominations within the forum, call for a vote and unanimously vote for the landslider for the sangeethapria award. that ofcourse requires a gist of the respective nominees of their achievements and contributions for CM and forum. this is required for late comers like me.

Perhaps we can also institute a rasikas.org award. Focus could be on those who have improved the cause of rasikas.
Good idea?

Irrespective of whether we have an award or not, that is a nice and appropriate twist to the award criterion.
