Sorry for not responding earlier. I dont know whether it is right to upload an entire concert, that too here. Even if I did that, I would be able to do it after 15 days or so, since I'm a bit occupied now with other work. Hope I am not disappointing you.

MS, while speaking of her first concert in Music Academy in 1934, said:

"My first important performance as a singer was at the Music Academy in Madras. It was to be a full-fledged, three-hour concert before an audience of musicians, critics and music lovers. I was 18. I shivered and trembled before the event. Trying not to look at the listeners, I went up to the stage, sat down, checked the tuning of the tambura, and began.

Suddenly, my fears fell away. I sang with joy. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, a well-known singer, had been sitting at the back. He got up and came to the front row, loudly expressing his approval. Others too were quick to say "Bhesh! Bhesh!" and "Sabhash!" I treasure the words of the great veena player Sambasiva Iyer. He said, 'Subbulakshmi? She carries a veena in her throat!' . That concert at the Music Academy was a very big step for me -- a step towards a lifetime of singing. And of devotion and service through the pursuit of music."

Chembai blessing Yesudas at Shanmukhananda Hall, Bombay, 1968. Chembai also honoured him with a congratulatory shawl, which was presented by the Kanchi Paramacharya to Chembai sometime earlier. This was the concert at the end of which Yesudas expressed his desire to become Chembai's disciple, and Chembai accepted.

For this photo, Veena S.Balachander writes his caption:
"Old King Cole,
was a merry old soul!
He called for his fiddlers three...
And told them to take a day free!!!"

The above words are from S.Balachander himself. Later when he got the Central Sangeet Natak Academy award, he was to write, refusing the award "This is a late award for Balachander, instead of an award for Late Balachander. There is a mahanubhava called Chembai who already has honoured me with the supreme title 'Nada Brahmam', and I cannot aspire to get a title any higher than that."

Srikris,

Thanks. But I cannot save it in my hard disk. The moment I click the track(s), it gets copied into temporary folder and real player gets activated.

If possible, kindly send it to me : kaumaaram@yahoo.com through yousendit.com.

I heard from "chembai" in the sangeetham forums that CVB was an expert in Kathri swarams.

Can someone post more rederings by CVB with kathri swarams? I'm fascinated by them...

Is there any math behind kathri swarams? I assume they are also a type of kanakku swaram...

Cheers

Dear Ramki

Grateful if you would kindly upload the relevant concert of Chembai in full. I am looking out for concerts of Chembai other than the pre-recs released by different companies.

Kaumaaram,

I have limits on my internet bandwidth which unfortunately forbids me from uploading or downloading anything substantial... and for this reason, I will not be able to upload whole concerts even though I have a good number of them... you are however welcome to take a copy of them offline on CDs from me if you stay in Chennai... my email is srkris@gmail.com
