Carnatic Classical Music Uploaders on Youtube

Post by Meenalochani »

Dear Members,

I am interested in getting the names of Carnatic classical music uploaders on YouTube. I already have a few names and some of them are
1. Prakashrao Narayanan (uploads concerts of maestros on a regular basis) and one of my favorite sites.
2. Raja Asokan (mostly North Indian Classical music)
3. Shnakar Rajasekharan
4. T.V. Gopalakrishnan (Sangeethapriya site)
5. Ranganathan Srinivasan (mostly associated with temple functions)
6. Arkay Ramakrishnan
7. Parivadini

I would like to kindly request members of the forum to direct me to more Carnatic music uploader names or how to get this information on Youtube.

Thank you very much,

Meenalochani

Alas, you're already late. Prakashrao's old channel has been terminated and he has another one somewhere else. It's an emergency. Call in 4K downloader and download the whole channels en masse right now before its too late. https://www.4kdownload.com/howto/howto- ... be-channel -- yes, seriously, the entire channel can be downloaded.

You know, now I am having 2nd thoughts about sharing youtube channels. What with algorithm false positives and who knows who can submit a violation claim for a recording made even 100 years ago....

After several failed experiments, I will show you a way of how to download en masse from Youtube channels :

1) You must have Link Klipper addon for Google Chrome installed
2) You should have Free Youtube download (latest version) installed -- it's freeware. Google and download

Now open the said user's channel and go to videos.

Either sort from newest-oldest or oldest-newest. Put the view to grid instead of list, it will list many more videos each time you press the load more button.

Scroll down and keep using the Load More button as far as it can go. I don't know if the whole channel becomes visible if you keep doing it indefinitely, but i have sometimes run into issues with that.

Now right click, select link clipper and extract all the links. It will generate a txt file or a csv file (open this in excel) with all the links it found. Open it.

The first several links are irrelevant. What you really need are the links that go like this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDyo0ppvbI4 . Start from the first link where you see that "watch?" in the link text. All the other links following this first one will be in a similar format. Those are the videos

Shift+Select all the way down to the last "watch?" link. After the last one, you will have a few other types of links. Those are also irrelevant.

CTRL+C all the selected links to copy them to clipboard.

Now open up Free Youtube download. Go to Tools -> Options. Set the default video format to whatever you want (I'd advise not to go beyond 480p or 720p unless you have the space for it). That is the maximum size of the video that will download. If the uploader has uploaded a 240p video and no larger size is available for e.g., then that will be the size that will be downloaded. Also select the Auto Download option when you have a lot of links

Now close the options box and come to the main menu. Now paste (CTRL+V) all those links you just copied and let 'em rip.... given enough time, an entire channel will be preserved. That user whose channel I added in the previous post, I've downloaded it all now. He's got a lot of rare GNB stuff, but I've also found that I already have many of them (either bought or sangeethapriya).

Just make sure you have enough space in your output folder.

Note : If you don't want mass download, just select a video and copy it's link and paste it in the Free Youtube Download window. You can then download one video at a time.

One more thing, do use discretion with commercial albums (many of them have their own Youtube channels now) and any recordings of today's artistes who do not want their music uploaded without permission (these are virtually impossible to determine in uploads of private collections and it's all a matter of huge debate). There is a difference between yesteryear music and today's music. In yesteryear's music, the problem was one of scarcity of any recorded music at all, and any rasika who had preserved old valuable collections has done a lot for preserving the art form - despite this I think the majority of the yesteryear stalwarts music is unrecorded -- to us today, that's a loss. For example, Palghat Raghu has said he has played for GNB in almost 2000 concerts, not to mention all the others who would have accompanied him, while all that we have today would total what, a dozen concerts? In which case, any collection left over is valuable.

Whereas with today's music it has gone to the other end and fallen off. No longer do we have to worry about lost music. Recording has become almost too easy, almost cheap. Virtually every concert has a cameraman (even those performed to empty halls), and many mobile phones, all of us to blame, including the stage artistes.. In fact in today's live concerts, it's so overblown I just feel like enjoying the music in peace, free of mobiles everywhere, listening through my ears, storing it in my memory, experiencing it live in person, than through any recorder. Our brains atrophy the way we use technology now-a-days. You get tired of continuously being bothered about the photographing and recording and just want to enjoy the music with all your attention, knowing fully well you don't have to worry about preserving a national treasure or anything, since there'll probably be enough copies of it out there to crash the internet. It will come out someday in the future.

Still, there is always that rare raga phrase, a new kanakku, a song you haven't heard before or found anywhere, a neraval for the gods, a swara prasthara that will keep you talking about it to your grandkids even, a new dimension of the music each time ... so how can one resist? Fortunately that mobile phone can run by itself till it's battery calls it a day leaving the human free to enjoy the music ... But yet no recording will ever match or fully capture the live experience of being there that day in that moment. Our limited memory notwithstanding, our senses are still the best way to experience live.

Copy right issues do arise if similar instrument rendition is in music labels umbrella. You will have to appeal and get the waiver

Hey everyone,

For what it's worth, I've found VIMEO to be a tasteful alternative to YouTube.

https://vimeo.com/channels/gautamtejasganeshan

This is my channel, which features only my own concerts.

30+ full films, recorded as well as I can,
and with a deep roster of accompanists,
primarily from around the SF Bay Area.

If nothing else, I think many of you may appreciate the recording quality,
(so listen with headphones or good speakers) -
I'm a stickler, I am actively against default close-mic'ing,
especially of mridangam - it hampers graceful movement,
it is not how all of our favorite old concerts were recorded,
just look how far from the Alathur Bros the one ribbon mic is placed,
and they & PMI sound just fine, if not even overblown, amazingly,
& I exclusively use real tamburas, with absolutely no "backup" electronic substitute to muddy the sound.

For instance, I think the way Vignesh V.'s mridangam sound is captured here
is far more compelling than in the average CM video, and this was outdoors:

https://vimeo.com/134783872

(& this concert led to this caricature:)

Image

So, hope you enjoy, & if you're around the SF Bay Area, please come to a concert!

We upload a learning series for Carnatic music on YouTube.

We are coming up with simple versions of bhajans, keerthanais, and varnams so that discerning students can learn these - without the manodharmam-rich versions rendered by professionals.

We're putting them together for different levels: children/ beginner/ intermediate/ advanced. With lyrics and meanings. Also adding a 101 for manodharmam - simple kalpana swaram with notation since creativity starts with some inspiration ;)

Children's songs: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... ux7miH_oBa

Beginner bhajans: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... eABmzu3O_B

Intermediate bhajans: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... Uu0lJSEiSM

Advanced varnams: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 5lLjPuaI2N

Advanced krithis coming right up!

There is a channel called Sangeetha Rasika that has been uploading over the past 1 year

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1GKiy ... WVoUj9ti5A

I have found Free Youtube Download to be the simplest way of grabbing videos when you see them - set the output directory in Tools -> Options -> Output. On the main page, select download only (No conversion) to grab the original video.

Then all one has to do is simply copy and paste the link on the main page and it does the rest.

Prakashrao Narayanan posts many nice videos. However there was an instance where he was very mean to a user telling them to "Go to Hell." I stopped watching him after that.
