SANDEEP CONCERT 26-07-2015 @ WEST MAMBALAM
I apologies to the precious English language which was invented 5th Century AD and I pity its misfortunate as iam writing a review in English, Sorry English Sorry Readers.
Yesterday Evening I Was Fortunate To See SANJAY,VARADHU& NEYVELI At Shri Nageswaran's Organized Concert At His Residence At West Mambalam , Yes Thanks To SANDEEP-ANANTHAKRISHNAN-ARJUN GANESH TRIO For A Marathon 3.45 Minutes Concert Which Resembled The Above Mentioned Veteran People’s Performance.
The 25 Odd Audience Had Fabulous Time And Enjoyed Each Minute, Hats Off To The Hospitality By Mr.NAGESWARAN , The Ambience Was Simply Superb And Compact Place Gave Closeness To Each Of Us With The Artists.
1) The Grand Concert Started With A Grand Varnam By SANJAY & SANDEEP’S Guru Calcutta KRISHNAMOORTHY’s Composition SHARANAGATHA VARSALE In KATHANAKUDHUHALAM . No Wonder It Is Called A Sparkling Varnam , With SANDEEP Doing Full Justice To The Song ,During The Niraval Phrases One Could See SANJAY Singing Before The Mic , ARJUN And ANANTH Gave Super Company And The TRIO Really Prepared Us For A Awesome Concert.
2) Sandeep In His Next Song Proved That He Is Disciple Of SANJAY By Singing A Tamil Number As 2nd Song Of The Evening , He Sizzled With His Favorite composer KOOTESWARA IYER’s NAATAI Raga VAA VAA SIKHI VAHANA The Song Written In Praise Of LORD MURUGA Was Sung By Sandeep In Terrific Pace And MURUGA Himself From Nearby Temple Visited The Concert Hall And Admired SANDEEP.
3) Next Item Was DWAJAVANTHI ALAPANA Wow SANDEEP Presented It So Very Beautifully And The Essence Of DWAJAVANTHI Filled The Hall In No Time , ANANTHAKRISHNAN Reproduced It Very Well And When People Thought Its Going To Be CHETHA SRI BALAKRISHNAM SANDEEP Sang AKILANDESWARI The Famous DIKSHITHAR Krithi Helped All The RASIKAS To Get The Grace Of GOODESS AKILANDESWARI , Goodness Of This Trio Was Experienced Throughout The Song .
4) SANDEEPS Next ALAPANA Was MAGICAL MOHANAM , Boy He Loves Singing It And We Love To Hear Him Singing This Beautiful Raga , We Travelled To WESTERN GHATS From WEST MAMBALAM With His Mohanam , ANANTHU Was Equally Elegant In His Response To The Alapana , With RADHE Sitting In First Row What Else Would SANDEEP Sing Other Than RADHA RAMANA Walajapet Venkatramana Bhaagavatar Krithi Was Beautifully Presented By SANDEEP And The RASIKAS DEEPLY INHALED MOHANAM .
5) The Next One Is The Main Piece Of The Evening , SANDEEPS Favorite KARAHARA PRIYA Alapana , The Karahara Priya With Its Swara’s Was As Good As A Gold Necklace With Studded Gems , And As All Guessed He Started To Sing EVER GREEN PAKALA NILABADI Though SAINT TYAGARAJA Made Late Entry Into The Concert It Was A Special Entry , Sandeep Made It Super Special With Excellent Singing Of PAKALA NILABADI Superbly Supported By ANANTHU AND ARJUN , ARJUN Gave A Mind Blowing Thani And He Was In Supreme Control Over His Instrument Yesterday.
6) After Three Consecutive Alapanas Sandeep Sang Thanjavur Sankara Iyer’s Natajanapalini In Raga Nalinakanthi , Like His Guru Sandeep Also Very Fluent In His Approach Towards Nalinakanthi And Those 6 Minutes Of Natajanapalini Is Unforgettable .
7) The Next One Is More Or Less A JUGALBANDHI Where SANDEEP Sang Beautiful Durga Alapana , In A Fraction Of Second We Thought All Of Us Where In GWALIOR Listening To GHARANA Music , The Rich Essence Of Hindustani Music Was So Admirably Presented By SANDEEP And Arjun Changed His MRIDANGAM Into TABLA And Anath Changed His Violin Into Shenoy , Excellent Alapana Sandeep looked like Alampana , Durga Is Known As SUDDHA SAVERI In Carnatic Forum And Nageswaran Who Requested Durga At The Beginning Of The Concert Was Mesmerized By Sandeeps DURGA , Next Followed Was A Excellent Tanam Of Durga And By The Time He Started Tanam Already 160 Minutes Gone By , But Sandeep Showed No Hint Of Tiredness On Contrary He Was Fresh And Handled Tanam With Ease . In Pallavi He Sang SHREE DURGE SUKHE , Lord Durga And The Devotees Present In The Hall All Got The Sukhanubhava With Such A Great Perfromace From Sandeep Narayan. When We Were Floating In Happiness To Add More Joy Sandeep Started The Ragamalika , First Was Blissful Bagyasri , Anathu Played It Superbly Then It Was My Favourite Nattukuruchi Yet Another Time Sandeep Reminded That He Is The Best Product Of Sanjay , It Was Followed By Breezy Behag , Sandeep Has Sung This Raga So Many Times And I Admire Him In Every Instance .
8) The Behag Thukkad Piece Followed Sramaina Matalaku A Very Rare Telugu Krithi By Swati Thirunal , The Melodius Raga Was Done Full Justice With Soothing Lyrics Of Swati .
9) There Was A Pause Before Singing The Next Number And He Sang A 30 Second Alapana Of Dazzling Desh And The Moment He Smiled At Me And The Phrases Ensured He Is Going To Sing THUNBAM NERGAYIL The Moment He Started The BHARATHIDASAN Song Entire Hall Echoed AAAHA , What A Song What A Composition And What A Presentation From Sandeep Simply Superb .
10) MAATHA RAMO Virutham With Ragamalaika Is The Next One To Attract The Rasikas , All Heavy Ragas Were Sung By Him With Ease Breathtaking Bhairavi ,Superb Shankarabaranam , Karismatic Khamboji,Terrific Thodi ,Majestic Kalyani And Finally Scintillating Sindhu Bhairavi The Time Was 3.30 Minutes And This High Energy Enthusiast Was Still kept it Going , Sang Ramanai Tharuvai Arunachala Kavi’s extraordinary song was presented beautifully and as usual SANDEEP’S SINDHU BHAIRAVI ruled us .
11) As a Sandeep Concert Mandatory element he sang Thillana Basant , composed by the legend T.N.Seshagoapal , BASANT was very pleasant .
12) Ended the Classis 3.50 Minutes Concert with Pavamana in Saurashtram.
Like rightly mentioned by NAGESWARAN sir we all felt like had a full meals with desserts of course. What a performance what a energy what a sincerity hats off Sandeep .Thanks a lot Sandeep & Nageswaran Sir let us have this as a Every Year Affair.

Re: SANDEEP CONCERT 26-05-2015 @ WEST MAMBALAM
I had already prepared this review and then saw Mudaliar's review. Neverthless I felt that enjoyment will be multi fold while reading two reviews of a wonderful concert.
Accompanists- B.Ananthakrishnan-Violin
Arjun Ganesh-Mridangam.
List of songs.
• Varnam-Kathanakuthoohalam-Calcutta Krishnamurthy
• Vaa Vaa Sikhivahana-Nata-Adi-Koteeswara Iyer (S)
• Akhilandeswari-Dwijavanti-Adi. MD (R)
• Radha Ramana Rakshamam anisam –Mohanam-Adi-WVB (R,S)
• Pakalanilabadi-Kharaharapriya-Misra chapu-T (R,N,S)
• Natajanapalini-Nalinakanthi- TSI
• Durga- RTP
• Saramaina-Behag (ST)
• Tunbam nergayil-Desh-Bharatidasan
• Slokam- Matha Ramo-Ragamalika
• Ramanai tharuvai-Sindubhairavi
• Thillana-Basant-TNS
• Mangalam
It was a vibrant and energy filled concert by Sandeep and his team. Sandeep has proved that you cannot dismissively label him as a mere shishya of Sanjay. He has started success on his own strengths which also includes an excellent display of Sanjay ‘s brand of music which has already got a wide acceptance. Sandeep's vocal range is excellent. He has an excellent sense of shruti and his laya jnanam is solid.
The varnam is not a commonly heard one and was handled with poise. The Nata raga Koteeswara Iyer kriti was new to me. The chittaswaram included shatsruti daivatam and he took care to present that in the kalpana swarams also. While welcoming the artistes, Nageswaran Sir requested for RTP, Durga and ragamalika slokams. Sensing the hosts’ penchant for Hindustani ragams, he launched an elaborate Dwijavanti followed by Akhilandeswari. Quickly he took up Mohanam next for elaboration and presented another unheard kriti- Radharamana of Walajapet Venkatramana Bhagavathar. Cascade of second kala swarams for this song and koraippu was display of his vidwat and felicity in voice. During raga alapanas, he was able to hit the upper dhaivatam on a number of occasions with ease; clearly this is something where his sheer tenacity and persistence have paid off.
The alapana of Kharaharapriya took a solid 25 minutes including violin essays and the lightening brighas, jarus, glides were abundant and well in place hitting the perfect notes. Elaborate neraval at Manasuna and swarams with interesting kanakkus were awe inspiring.
The piece de resistence for the day was of course, Durga- as requested by Nageswaran Sir. The alapana which covered three octaves revealed the myriad hues of the ragam which we rarely come across in a Carnatic concert. The tanam, a tarana in typical HM mode and the pallavi in tisra triputa- Sree Durge Sukhe Sangeetha rasike were scholarly. RM swaras were in Bagesree, Natakurinji and Behag. Usual trikalam was done in the pallavi.
The slokam was in all big ragams- Bhairavi, Sankarabharanam, Thodi, Kambodi, Kalyani and Sindubhairavi. The bhairavi and thodi, specifically, though it was a capsule, it lingered in the minds for long. The thillana on Basant was a compostion of TNS and was on Ganapati. TNS used to sing this in all Ganapati song concerts on the occasion of Vinayaka Chaturthi.
Sandeep has proved as a much deeper musician than just the person who managed to operationalize the Sanjay style. His professionalism, stage craft, voice culture and several aspects of his musicianship reflect the sadhakam that he has put in over the years. His planning also is appreciable. He maintained a perfect balance of HM and Carnatic ragams. He has managed to avoid the face and hand gestures of his Guru for good. Even his Guru has reduced them to a great extent. Those gestures drove me off from his Guru’s concerts initially.
B Ananthakrishnan is a very good violinist. My first time listening to him. He certainly has a good bowing style, one can see the BHU influence and N.Rajam’s style in him. His raga essays were excellent and swara prastarams most appropriate. In raga essays, he took the same time as the vocalist which is not always appreciated. Arjun Ganesh's playing was a great embellishment for the concert. There was good use of gumki and very fluent rhythmic syntax while playing for compositions, He has an excellent nadham and follows the vocalist with great precision.
The concert went on for three hours and forty five minutes. The artistes on stage had adequate stamina to pull on such a heavily charged concert without a minute of sagging. There were about 40-45 people and nobody left in between. Everybody was welcomed with a hot tea at the start of the concert. From rasikas family, Sivaramakrishnan, sureshvv, varsha with his son, tvg etc attended. I take this opportunity to thank Nageswaran Sir, for hosting such a wonderful concert.

If I want to listen to Sanjay, I will go listen to Sanjay. Sandeep has to be Sandeep and bring Sandeep out in his music.aravindan mudaliar wrote:Yesterday Evening I Was Fortunate To See SANJAY,VARADHU& NEYVELI At Shri Nageswaran's
I was there but not for the entire duration so missed virutham; IMO the comments/opinions don't appear impartial; everything is great (or the best invention since idli) whereas it was a standard/average fare; dwijavanthi wasn't to my liking and didn't bring out the nuances or his voice isn't very suited to that; alapanai of KHP going uuuuuuu for a loong while which lost its charm after a while; I get turned off by hindustanish ragas/fare so no opinion on durga.
One more thing I would have liked is not to have had amplification at all - and let it be heard as-is to give a chamber feel.

Thanks every one for the report/review. I am sure it was a typo in post # 1, "3.45 minutes concert" instead of 3 Hrs. 45 minutes concert. Will soon enjoy the recording.

Re: SANDEEP CONCERT 26-07-2015 @ WEST MAMBALAM
Dear Shri Nageswaran,
I have heard >90% of the concert by now. I am savouring Kharaharapriya raga right now.
Whereas I missed the ambiance, the live experience of music and the company of so many rasikas whom I have such affectionate regard for, I am compensated at least by being able to listen to a high quality audio. THANKS
I think the Durga raga and tanam stole the show. It was done remarkably well. Even the tarana which had splendid mridangam accompaniment. This will be a tour de force recording.
The Mohana and Nata did not catch my fancy except for some exceptional vocal gymnastics in Mohana and the sonorous violin.
The Dwijavanti and Akhiladeshwari take the second place for me. The TNS Basant tillana was a real novelty.
The ragas in the shloka were like paisa-vasool in the parlance of a CA friend and CM rasika. Those ragas never bore me.
Sandeep strikes me as a power house of musical energy and resource. His voice is here a bit nasal, his singing is VERY Sanjay-like to my thinking. He gives a uniformly rich fare throughout. The contemplative quality is not something he seems to stand for. But then in the rich fare of Carnatic music, the ragas and the lyrics, by themselves, evoke contemplation in a sensitive listener. Just like T20 has forever changed cricket batting, I think Sanjay and his followers among singers and listeners, have changed the "power vs. subtlety and contemplativeness" equation forever in CM. Maybe this is another phase of CM (started by TNS?) after GNB brought in the brigha dynamic into CM. That so many veteran rasikas all liked the Sandeep concert so much speaks well for this new phase.
The violin and mridangam are HUGE factors in a CM concert today. Both Anantha Krishnan and Arjun Ganesh have done a great job here and have a great future in CM. Anantha Krishnan was never found wanting in this concert. Arjun has the mojo of a top class mridangam player in a bharatanatyam concert, clued into every phrase and gesture and ready to embellish everything! I would caution against excess there. But his Tani was wonderful. Made full use of the "Manasu" phrase!
Thank you, Mr Nageswaran!

Re: SANDEEP CONCERT 26-07-2015 @ WEST MAMBALAM
I had a chance so far only to listen to the RTP in Durga, mohanam and dwijAvanti. As far as hearing Durga in CM concerts, the very first time we all heard was perhaps when maharajapuram santhanam tuned a tukkada rAmam bhajE shyamam manasa , the dayananda saraswati composition. Then I think at times few musicians sing a gayathi vanamali - sadashiva brahmendra composition in durga . Other than these two scanty tukkadas there is no immediate recollection for me of any durga composition sung in a cm concert .
His taanam in durga was very much hindustani - may be just bringing in more idioms like tom ta nam etc than making it as a hindustani singer singing a number , I assume that can be improved upon as he delivers the next time the same Durga RTP. Durga is not fully imported to CM but with sandeep the import has just started .
Sandeep like * very very few musicians of today * has pushed the frontier of Durga by singing a RTP. As such hidden facets of any raga gets more exposed when musicians take up a raga for RTP .Durga is resurrected by sandeep. When raga contours have limited scope at times the violin artist has to equally play with vocal artist.Ananthakrishnan gave a more folk like reply. Arjun ganesh was rocking in RTP.
What matters for any musician is not how any musician overlaps or not overlaps with his/her guru . It also does not matter if there is only contemplation or power. Bottomline what matters is there should be not be any sag . Sandeep never sags
. Keep it up sandeep ,bak and arjunganesh.
Nageswaran Sir,
You and your enthusiasm made sandeep create history as I am assuming this is the first attempt by anyone to sing a durga RTP(some one can correct if I am wrong).
SureshVV,
It looks this is the first time that you have come to a concert when anything is organized by different rasikas from chennai(apart from the one where you invited us for Tadepalli in memory of your father at Mylapore)

Nice beginning, but that sentence gives lie the notion of anyone's misfortune! As you know, your English is great and going by someone's comment here, I can only wonder how good your Tamil must be! On the other hand you owe a pretty serious apology to punctuation, specifically case selection, and also paragraph formatting.aravindan mudaliar wrote:I apologies to the precious English language which was invented 5th Century AD and I pity its misfortunate as iam writing a review in English, Sorry English Sorry Readers.
Thank you for your nice review
I always wish for mikeless..sankark wrote:
If I want to listen to Sanjay, I will go listen to Sanjay. Sandeep has to be Sandeep and bring Sandeep out in his music.
One more thing I would have liked is not to have had amplification at all - and let it be heard as-is to give a chamber feel.
But Sankark, do you want all of Sandeep or only some? If you want Sandeep, you have to accept Sanjay too. Everyone is a mix of all their influences. That's who they are. Sanjay is a part of Sandeep.
NOW I understand Suresh's comment in General about Sankark's - may be - criteria. Just discovered this thread.

I remember Priya sisters singing Purandaradasa's Dharmashravanamedakke Murkhage in Durga in their Pennsylvania concert some 3 years ago. There was a video of it on YouTube - the song, not the concert.rajeshnat wrote: . Dharmasravana has been sung by GNB in several concerts, so Durga in CM certainly predates Maharajapuram Santhanam.

Ranganayaki,
Yes, GNB, and Sandeep's guru singing 'mannu pugazh kOsalai tan maNi vayiRu vAythavanE' in DurgA, a sprightly start for a rAga mAlikA.
As you say, if Sandeep sounds like Sanjay, what's surprising about it? He started his training first with Sanjay's guru Calcutta Krishnamurthy too!
I have been listening to Sandeep for some years, and knew he would make a mark. He's doing that. Like his guru, he is also finding his own expression in music. Good for him. I like his involvement and his spirited singing. What I heard two days ago was impressive. It will take time for him to sing like his guru, of course. I listened to his yadukula kAmbOdi among others on Youtube, and there, in that precious rAgA, his anubhavA level is not that high. The rAgA is a tough one, more so than the major rAgAs...
Aravinda Mudaliar's tamizh just flows! Like K V Chellapa, I look forward to his reviews. Welcome to him, a new member here

At the end of the tanam, there was a tarana session with percussion support. Would have been nice if he had folded back into the anantom tanom phrases to finish the Tanam and signify start of pallavi. Was a bit of an abrupt ending.rajeshnat wrote:

With no upapakka vadhyam support and a fairly tidy thani, it was amazing that the concert went on for close to 4 hours.

When the tarana was going on, I wondered if he was going to sing a tarana instead of the pallavi. God. He came back to CM and presented the rocking pallavi.

rajesh,
I recollect that Vid. Pantula Rama has song Pallavis in Durga several times. The first time was probably in the Kanakadurga temple at Vijayawada, but then she has repeated it elsewhere.
Some googling revealed that she's sung a Durga pallavi as part of Carnatica's Pallavi navAham in October 2004, steered by the late lamented TRS.

the above link is really a treasure. So many two rtp concerts were held in 2004 with so many artists singing rare ragas . Looks durga pallavi was first sung by pantula rama and then sandeep.
Tx to otherz who gave gnb references of a particular durga devarnama krithi. Ragamaliga I do know many have touched durga.

As a guy not conversant with the technical aspects of RTPs ( Since I have not learned to even identify notes ) I must that I have come across two kinds of RTPS in my listening career
a) The deep one , which clasps you like a python and builds into a rythmic climax , much like the dhrupad with many intricacies
b) The breezy one , that skims the surface like a kingfisher , swooping , picking and flying to hover around (I first encountered this kind at concerts of TVS.
Sandeeps Durga RTP was category B
Pantulas RTP was like category A .
That Pantula could tackled Durga in category A is mind boggling .
Rajesh
Somu has sung Durga delightfully to the accompaniment of Lalgudi . Their version makes me believe that they would have watched the movie "geet gaya patharone"in a theatre the previous evening .
MLV and RKS have many other tracks to their credit in this raga

In general with the scope of ragas the RTP can be of type A or type B. Were you there for Pantula when she sang that RTP in durga in 2004 or any time before or after. By any chance is there a recording . I am assuming even Pantula may have sung it as only Type B.

I was not at the 2004 concert, Rajesh.
I also don't have much experience of being choked by a python. But I see what Varsha says is type A. I think sometime back i even wrote that the true blue RTP was an endangered species (like many exotic snakes also)
http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... TP#p273473
And I heard Sandeep. His was type B. I won't argue if he should have done a Type A. But the way the RTP fitted into the concert, and the way he and accompanists delivered it, I liked it.

I liked it too . But wondered like many other things I like , in life , if it was good to like it, and the way he and accompanists delivered it, I liked it.
I was there at the concert . Have a bootlegged poor quality recording spanning 62 mts.It was at our request that sjhe sang it then ( A fellow west mambalite - who is no more and myself ) I had uploaded it long long ago and can do it again in a different thread .I was not at the 2004 concert
My point was that Durga fits into a bracket with other ragas which seem to have scope for a type A rtp until someone comes along and gives a type b version .
BVR L' s Hameer Kalyani RTP , MLV s Revathi RTP ....come to mind
