KSSR,

Sufi music is devotional music of the Sufi's inspired by poets like Amir Khusrow, Khwaja Gulam Farid and others. Qawali is the most prominent form of Sufi music and the greatest ever was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Here is a youtube link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr6CNejcFRQ

Please pay close attention from about 6.24 You will see their version of kalpana swarams which is just awesome.

Mahavishnu, There is an event by Sufi musician Hans Raj Hans and our L Shankar coming to the bay area on October 3rd. Hope you can catch it. I am planning to attend the Oct 1 show here at the Nokia theater.

Listened to Nusrut fateh ali khan saab. Simply amazing. They maintain a consistent super human pitch over the entire presentation. There are a lot of swara passages as well. Shifts from one to another similar to a ragamalika. Lyrics and meaning if available will give a better insight. First time listening to such a great artist.Previously only Rafi's cinema qawwalis. They are excellent too, with his unbelievably sweet voice. Thanks VRV sir.

greatest ever was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Most popular and Well known Yes .
Greatest ? Maybe Yes until his music got commercialised and went the Pop way .
A good insight into Sufism is got in one of the interviews with Mukhtyar Ali for one of the five famous dvds released by a Bangalore based Organisation .
He is asked : You say your father is a singer as well so whats the difference between your style and his .
Mukhtyar Ali glances at his father sitting in the front porch of his hut and says
My Fathers Music ? Yes but he reads too much . While my soul is here
and the camera pans to the keys of the harmonium

Pandith vAd vadathi jhUTa ......Oshos discourse in Hindi comes to mind .

a soulful bit of our generation .

Here is a beauty .
There are more , which can be a very cathartic experience .Can post more if interest continues here.

Dai Halima
(The Midwife)

Hoor-O-Malaik Jhoom Uthay, Haq Ne Jaari Farmaan Kiya
Registan-E-Arab Ko Jiss Ne Rashk-E-Baharistan Kiya
Jashn Manao! Qudrat Ne Her Mushkil Ko Aasan Kiya
Arsh Ne Yeh Khush-Khabri Bheji, Zameen Ne Yeh Ailaan Kiya

Swaying to and fro, the houris and the angels arose as God issued His decree
which made the Arabian desert the envy of blosssoming gardens
Celebrate! Celebrate! Celebrate! Nature has eased all of your difficulties
the Heavens send down that glad tiding, the earth made this announcement:

Abdullah Ke Ghar Se Jahaan Me Noor Bikharne Waala Hai
Dai Halima Gode Mein Teri...

Light will spread from the home of Abdullah to the world
Halima, the moon is about to descend in your lap

Dai Halima Goad Mein Teri Chand Utarne Waala Hai
Halima, the moon is about to descend in your lap

Khush Hue Jinn–O–Bashar, Sun Ke Ye Naik Khabar
Mehre Tazim-O-Adab, Jhuk Gaye Shams-O-Kamar
Baam Armaan Ke Saje, Rooh Ke Saaz Baje
Chaand Ne Haskar Kaha, Mehre Tazeem Jhuka
Sun Le Maula Yeh Doha, Kar De Raah Uski Panah

Humans and spirits were delighted upon hearing this good news
the sun and the moon bowed down out of reverence and respect
the terraces of longing were decorated, the souls' bells sounded
bowing in reverence, the moon said laughingly:
"O Lord, hear my prayer, Make his path a refuge"

Sun Le Maula Yeh Doha Kar De Rah Uski Panah
Uske Kadamon Mein Bicha Jispe Ufaq Hai Fida
O Lord, hear my prayer, Make his path a refuge
Place in his footsteps... in which You Yourself are devoted.

Kehkashan Bol Uthi, Maula Arman Hai Yahi
Uski Mein Raah Banoon, Uski Thokar Mein Rahoon
Mere Uper Wo Chale, Mere Uper Wo Chale Aaye Din Mere Bhalay
Zindagi Phule Phale, Uski Na-Lain Ta'lay

the Milkyway said "O Lord, this is my desire:
let me be his path, let me remain below his feet
may He walk upon me, it would herald in my good days!
life would be so prosperous beneath his sandals!"

Phool Ko Uski Talab, Shakh Ko Uska Aqab
Sub Talabgaar Hoay, Uske Beemar Hoay
Amna Goad Meri, Apne Jalwo Say Bhari
Ay Halima Tu Machal, Naaz Ker To Jhoom Ke Chal
Wo Nabi Pyara Nabi, Muntazir Jis Ke Sab-He

the flower desires him, the branch venerates him
everyone desired him, they became his patients
Amna, your lap is full of splendour
O Halima be confidant, walk with a swagger of pride
that Prophet, beloved Prophet, whom everyone has been awaiting

Wo Nabi Pyara Nabi, Muntazir Jis Ke Sub He
Aanay Wala Hai Wohi...
He is about to arrive!

Wo Nabi Pyara Nabi Muntazri Jiss Ke Sub He
Anay Wala Hai Wohi Anay Wala Hai Wohi
Wo Nabi Pyara Nabi Muntazri Jiss Ke Sub He
Anay Wala Hai Wohi Anay Wala Hai Wohi

that Prophet, beloved Prophet, whom everyone has been awaiting
He is about to arrive! He is about to arrive!
that Prophet, beloved Prophet, whom everyone has been awaiting
He is about to arrive! He is about to arrive!

To Jhoom Ri Dunya Tera Muqaddar Aaj Sanwarne Wala Hai
Dai Halima Goad Mei Teri Chand Utarne Wala Hai
O unsteady world, your destiny will be healed today
Halima, the moon is about to descend in your lap

Aaye Ga Wo Mehboob E Khuda Wo Hamdam Dawar Aaye Ga
the beloved of God, the friendly Prince, He will come
Duniya Jispar Naaz Karegi Aisa Payambar Aayega
A Prophet that the whole world shall take pride in will come

Ey Pyaasi Makhlooq Ne Ghabra, Tujh tak Saagar Aayega
Leke Maye-Kausar Ka Pyaala, Saki-E-Kausar Aayega
Leke Maye-Kausar Ka Pyaala Saki-E-Kausar Aayega
Kaandhe Par Kamali Dale Allah Ka Dilbar Aayega

O thirsty creatures, do not worry. The goblet will reach you.
with a cup of heavenly wine, the heavenly cupbearer will come.
with a cup of heavenly wine, the heavenly cupbearer will come.
with a cloak upon his shoulders. God's beloved will come!

Allah Ka Dilbar Aayega
God's beloved will come!

Bara Rabi-Ul-Awwal Ka Din, Subh Ke Thande Saaye
Aur Shor Huwa Aafaq Mein Har-So Lo Wo Mohammad Aaye
Bara Rabiulawwal Ka Din, Subh Ke Thande Saaye
Aur Shor Huwa Aafaq Mein Har-So Lo Wo Mohammad Aaye

on the twelfth day of the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal in the cool shade of dawn
a noise came from the horizons: "Mohammad has arrived!"
on the twelfth day of the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal in the cool shade of dawn
a noise came from the horizons: "Mohammad has arrived!"

Aaye Re Aaye More Bhag Jagaye

my fortunes have been lifted!
Jab Hoay Paida Mohammad Mustafa Goad Mein Le Ker Halima Ne Kaha
Aaye Re Aaye More Bhag Jagaye

when Mohammad, the chosen one, was born... Halima took him in her lap and said:
"My fortunes have been lifted!"

Her Ik Se Halima Kehti Thi Is Bache Ko Allah Rakhe
Jiss Din Se Wiladat Payi Hai Gibrael Barabar Aate Hein
Aaye Re Aaye More Bhag Jagaye

to everyone Halima would say: "May God protect this child"
since the day of his birth Gabriel has been by his side
My fortunes have been lifted!

Bare Gunah Se Bojal Insaan Hashar Ke Din Ki Fikr Na Ker
Teri Shafat Hogi Yaqeenan Shahfa-E-Mehshar Aaye Ga
To Aaye Ga Shah Jo Sub Ki Jholi Bharne Wala Hai
Dai Hamila Goad Mein Teri Chand Utarne Wala Hai

you people who are burdened with sin, fear not the Day of Judgement
you will surely be saved, the interceder of the Resurrection will come
that Prince shall come, who will spread happiness to everyone
Halima, the moon is about to descend in your lap

Dai Hamila Gode Mein Teri Chand Utarne Wala Hai...

Thank you all for this wonderful discussion and enlightening posts on Sufi music.

It was an excellent concert yesterday by Vidushis Mambalam sisters - we will be posting a writeup and some photos shortly.

We have received a tremendous number of pre-registrations for today's Sufi music programme, and already have a full house. The hall has fairly limited seating capacity, so we have stopped further issue of donor passes since we will not be able to accommodate more.

We thank all rasikas for this overwhelming response.
