After limping back to normalcy post rains & floods, decided to sort of kick start the season and who better than TVS' concert to start with! I remember saying this many times and dont mind repeating it again, Such brilliant (& at the same time so uncomplicated music) sans any fuss whatsoever, possible only with certain musicians like TVS, OST etc. His voice was in TOP form today evening, and a wonderful list too, not commonly heard ones from TVS. The music just flowed like a river right from the word go, with the vidwAn at his enthusiastic best. The swara patterns were as intricate as ever, keeping the sarvalaghu as base and at the same time, with the subtle mathematical patterns overlooking here n there, but when TVS sang them, it was just music all along.
What to say about Varadarajan! Phew! Am always a great admirer of Varadarajan & Nagai Sriram. Having heard V'rajan over the years with so many top musicians, his stature as a brilliant artiste just keeps rising with every single concert that he plays. Reproducing whatever came his way and then a little bit more, he was just outstanding all along. Regal bowing & tonal brilliance.

Me too attended this concert and happy that I did. Very smooth delivery, no strain whatever, perfect sruthi siddan as known in his school, sarvalaghu swarams and subtle kannaku... Loved it...
Wish he sang a different song in kharaharapriya, there are many jems of sathguru.... Nothing else to crib, so,picking..
Varadhu is such a jem... He predicted very well during swaras and returns we great.
Percussion team played their part well..
Hearing Sri TVS after about five years, still same voice...amazing....
Kedaram song, who composed it? TNS said, he tuned peria swamy thoran keerthana in puruvikalyani.

I distinctly remember shrI TVS once mentioning that it was a composition of Shuddhananda Bharathi.pattamaa wrote:Kedaram song, who composed it?

Semmu86, thanks for your review and concert list. But you didn't mention anything about percussion department. Since you play mrudangam yourself, would love to hear details of laya from this concert.

Adi Sankarar Padam Pottruvom is Periyasamy Thooran's composition. A very good Tamil song.

Rajarao is known for power hitting. He does not need mike. He will gel well with Kadri sax where noise can meet noise.Gumkhi wrote:Semmu86, thanks for your review and concert list. Well why single out Rajarao , most of the leading mrudangam players are hitters. And the next generation is following their foot steps. More sound, better their psychic relief.
Very few followers of Vellore Ramabadhran style playing - exceptions being Mannargudi Eswaran , Ganapathiraman , Guru Raghavendra and a few more
Having heard MMI + Vellore Ramabhadran, TVS + Mannargudi Eswaran would have been similar combination for sowkyam.

I am sure you would have not attended this concert, if so why do you make assumptions? Raja rao is the best suited one for TVS (with due respect to all other senior mridangam artists). I have heard him performing very soft - a recent accompaniment to S. Varadarajan's violin solo this season is an example on how to aesthetically accompany on mridangam. It is indeed a lesson to all upcoming artists,
