Venue: Sivagami Pettachi Auditorium, Luz Church Road, Mylapore, Chennai

Date: 14 Dec 2006

Organizer: Brahma Gana Sabha

Vocal: Sri Sanjay Subramanian

Violin: Sri S. Varadarajan

Mridangam: Sri Pathri Satish Kumar

Morsing: Sri Bangalore Rajasekar

I reached this concert after attending Sri Karaikkudi Mani's taniavartanam concert when Sri Sanjay was singing the main composition of the day. I missed out listening to the intial set of songs. Here is the partial song list (may be some one else who attended can help complete this list) :

* ADum deivam nI - kAmbOji - Adi - pApanAsam sivan (ANST)

* rAgam tAnam pallavi (RTP) - hamsAnandi (pallavi also in ragas sahAnA, sAvEri, sudha danyAsi, naLinakAnti & bahudAri) - Adi

pallavi wordings: "karuNincharA lOkAdhAra"

* pagaivanukkaruLvAi - rAgamAlikA - Adi (tisra gati) - subramaNya bhArati

* kunram yEndi (viruttam) - shanmukhapriyA, behAg, sindhubhairavi & sAmA

nArAyaNa naLinAyada - sAmA - Adi - pApanAsam sivan

* gaNTA maNi ADudhu - kAnadA - Adi - gOpAlakrishna bhArati

* english nOte - sankarAbharaNam - Adi (tisra gati) - harikEsanallUr muthiAh bhAgavathar

* pavamAna (mangaLam) - sOwrAshtram - Adi - thyAgarAja

(Key: O=raga outline, A=raga alapana, N=neraval, S=kalpana swaram, T=taniavartanam)

It feels so great to be back in Chennai during the season after what seems like ages. To add to this feeling, I was able to attend three superb concerts during the day - one fully and two partially.

The day's listening session culminated with a fabulous concert by Sri Sanjay Subramanian and his team of accompanists who assisted him brilliantly. Though I managed to reach this concert only when Sri Sanjay was doing neraval in the main kriti, I was able to enjoy it fully thanks to a brisk ragam tanam pallavi that followed it. While singing the pallavi in ragas other than hamsanandi, Sri Sanjay used popular songs in those ragas to set the tune to the pallavi lines. For example, Sri Sanjay sang the pallavi wordings but used the exact tune of entanErchinA (sudha danyAsi), manavyALakin (naLinakAnti) and brOva bAramA (bahudAri). This made the audience connect with the pallavi well (because of selection of songs they are used to hearing so often).

I am at a loss of words to describe Sri Pathri Satish Kumar's wizardry on the mridangam. He was his usual self displaying great anticipation skills and mastery over the instrument. Sri Rajasekar on the morsing played very good replies to Sri Satish Kumar's sollus during the taniavartanam that comprised the chatusra and misra nadais.

Ram Sir,
Thank you for your dedicated reviews and helpful info.

Could you post the schedule for KRM Sir and Raghu Sir and a review of concerts featuring either of them that you are able to attend?

Thanks.

When Sudha Raghunathan sang at SIFA this year, she did something similar. While singing ragamalika swaras for the pallavi, she sang the popular song in that raga briefly. e.g. asaindhadum mayil for s'madhyamam, Thaye yashodha for Thodi etc.

mahesh,

I have tried to include whatever I know of Sri KRM and Sri Raghu's schedule at http://ramsabode.wordpress.com/concerts-in-chennai/

FYI ... Sri Palghat Raghu is scheduled to play for Chitravina N. Ravikiran today at 6:30PM at Brahma Gana Sabha (Sivagami Pettachi Auditorium, Luz Church Road, Mylapore).

Coming to the reviews .... Sri Karaikudi R. Mani presented a taniavartanam concert yesterday and I have written about the same at http://ramsabode.wordpress.com/2006/12/ ... -the-rays/ and also included the same in the "Kutcheri Reviews & Recordings" section here.

.... and finally ... please don't call me sir ... makes me feel soooooo old :(
