Sanjay Subhramanyan,Tripunithura,Kerala, 23rd January

41st Sree Poornathreeseya Sangeeth Sabha Annual Festival
Abishekam Convention Center, Tripunithura
23rd January 2016

Vid Sanjay Subhramanyan - Vocal
Vid S Varadarajan - Violin
Vid Neyveli B Venkatesh - Mridangam
Vid Tripunithura Radhakrishnan - Ghatam

My first concert of 2016 after long break. I have adjusted my travel accordingly so that I will kick start 2016 concert attendance but I have to regret that to miss post RTP as I have to catch train :-(.

Before the concert Sanajay was awarded 'Sangeetha Sampoorna' by the Sabha. Sanjay in his acceptance speech in his customary humour mentioned that he is receiving an award from a Sabha where he has never sung :-).

Reeti Gowla varnam done in his usual two speeds and Gaula followed quickly with round of breakneck speed swaras. The first alapana mArga hindolam was lilting and by then Varadu was on his zone with his returns and showing glimpse of what is going to come from him.

When he started vanaspati, I could quickly grabbed that (pat on my back) and duly confirmed by my friend. Seeing couple of shaking heads Sanjay announced its vanaspati. vana dhurge krithi was rendered beautifully.

Coming to Sanjay's concert where I look for what he offer in 1) RTP 2) Tamil composer & 3) rare ragas. Contemplating he might pitch in for sAveri main and RTP might be Sankarabaranam today. And he started Sankarabaranam alapana I am kind of overjoyed. Grand alapana with his brilliant sangatis and pidis. Now what krithi will he sing? Was telling my friend being in Kerala wish he sing ST's devi jagajjanani, and came 'Muthukumaranaiyyne'. Oh 'Thai Poosam' on sunday he was spot on :-). Varadu's alapana and violin returns were beautiful in sanakrabaranam.

Time was 7.50 so what will be the rtp. Filler came in varali. Aboghi (kind of confused early to Sriranjani, why I always have this:-(). tAnAm from Varadu was exemplary. Stop the swara ragamalika is waiting. Lilting sahAnA, and the 3+ minutes of bAgesri from Sanjay was fabulous. Applause was raining from the sparse (not a full house) continously for both Sanjay and Varadu duel. Splendid !!

Now the hard part, I have to run off to catch train :-( Walking out during a tAni, I never do but I had no choice.

No complaints as Sanjay is coming again on 4th February to Vytilla, Bhaktha Meera Temple concert and if things goes well can hear him at my home ground, Srirangam on 22nd February.

PS : Guess some video recordings of this is already out in YT. Look for it.

List of Krithis (partial)

I heard even a music teacher identify an abhogi piece as Sriranjani. Is it perhaps because of some common phrases?

They are very close, Sriranjani being a superset by a single swara. However some presentations make the distinction very clear & others on occasion leave an ambiguuty. Keeravani & Simhendramadhyamam seems to be another pair that can trip up even seasoned musicians (not Sanjay). Malladis are able to distinguish Jayamanohari in the mix with elan.

Jayamanohari should be called "Abhogisri ranjani" :?

The landing notes and sancaras are pretty different for abhogi and Sri ranjani. They just have to be listened and understood carefully and correctly.

bharath, it is other way round. The problem could be with singer singing such way as to create this confusion for the listener.

Purist, cant deny that totally. however, one needs to be sure that one will be able to differentiate between the artist singing it wrongly/confusingly and/or one is not competent enough to identify them. these are two totally different things and wrong identification could be due to either of them, if not both.

I have found a positive correlation between certain artistes and certain raga ambiguities. Of course I could also be the common factor :-)

Abhogi/Sriranjani is one. Keeravani/Simhendramadhyamam is another. When the same artiste trips me up more than once on the same raga ambiguity I make a mental note.

The way Sanjay sang is available in the link provided by Mahavishnu. How has Sanjay done? Is there ambivalence in his singing?

The great KVN sang once abhogi Sri ranjani and jayamanohari in the same concert. Recently vijay siva sang madhyamavati Sri manirangu in a Pallavi. I do get tripped with Sri ranjani and abhogi at times. Certain artists make them very very clear, siva being one. Not so much confusion with keeravani and SM, may be the M gives it away

It is more of a statistical thing. Not a consistent occurrance.
