I had to leave after the sixth song. Overall a good concert once again by TMK. Kharaharapriya was simply superb.
The concert could have been certainly made better for the audience by including at least one fast paced song. All songs were sung slowly and this certainly didn't look like a concert that would get someone who didn't know much about carnatic music interested in it. Even "manavyalakim" was sung slow. I am saying this especially in the context of an auditorium like the one where the concert was held. The auditorium stretched for quite some distance from the stage and it is very easy for the singer to get the audience to lose interest if "interesting" songs aren't there. This is what precisely happened at least with the people sitting around me almost at the back of the auditorium.

I was there too, Ram! I don't know about people around you but where I was sitting (decided to splurge on a 100 rupee ticket), the reaction was quite positive, except for a few gentlemen who had essentially come to watch the following act: Vyjayanthimala!
Agree with you on the Kharaharapriya....Krishna's has to commended for the transformation of his naturally heavy and rigid voice into one of the most versatile ones in the circuit - I can just imagine how much effort must have gone into the process. Although the speed of his brighas sometimes comes at the expense of precision, the net effect is a wholesome one. The alaapana was also fairly adventurous by Krishna's usually traditional standards with sustains phrases anchored on the Dhaivatham and Rishabham, giving the raga new and not unpleaasnt dimenstions. BTW, TMK's concert at this venue last year also featured Kharaharapriya as the main piece (an RTP).
Janaki Pathe was a happy departure from the usual staple of Chakkani Rajas and Pakkal Nilabadis. The neraval line, "Pada Saro Ruha Charane", was a unique one, starting (I think), 5 matras before Samam, resulting in an interesting Korvai that he threw in at the end. The percussion team was quick to cash in on the possibility, as well, with a smart 2 avartha korvai to sign off their tani.
KV Prasad's tone is very soothing indeed and he provided some great accompaniment for the Mukhari piece. For once the ghatam was not drowned out either. Prasad conceived 2 interesting korvais in the tani both of which were picked up well by Sridhar. The first was a first was about 1.5 avarthas in duration in Chatushram, Tisram and Chatushram. The second was 2 avarthas and reversed the order with a Tisram-Chatusram-Tishram combo. There was another one in a nadai I could not follow before the koraippu...corrections to the many mistakes my untrained ear might have made, are welcome...
Tragically there was no RTP - there were some 45 odd minutes after the main piece - "rendunkallam"! I suppose an RTP with a brief alaapana could have been fit in but the Javali was a very good one and made up somewhat. There was also a piece in Pharas, a Vruthham (for a Azhi Mazhai Kanna in Varali) and a piece in Kaapi.

Vijay,
Nice review !!
I felt the place at which the neraval was done and kalpana swaram was put was 1 beat before samam which would be 4 mAtrAs before samam. The other naDai you are talking about was misram.
Though I enjoyed the concert a lot, I felt a lot of people at the back were losing interest because the volume was kind of getting a bit lower, the songs were slow and there were more disturbances because of the sides of the auditorium being open. I think it would have certainly been better sitting in the rows closer to the stage.
