The start after bhairavi alapana was a surprise krithi. IIRC,I have not heard this krithi other than few vintage recordings . Every bhairavi kirithi of Trinity especially Of T has a different aesthetics and this sreee raghuvara especially the neraval was superb. May be few more rounds of swaras would have made it better. The next was a krithi only #2 drop, the drop of begada was nice but I am not a big fan of this particular krithi.

From hamsanandi everything zoned into consistency and excellence . The hamsanandi was a brilliant rendition and was very original - he sang with a little more anchor in dhaivatam than nishadam is what i thought. Hamsanandi intrinsically welcomes with lot of karvais and jArus and they were in plenty and this swathi krithi is truly a gem. The vilambit asaveri and the fast nalinakanthi were both lovely particularly the finish of nalinakanthi swaras where both MAS and suryaprakash dazzled with lovely percussion support .

The main in kambOdhi was well done . I was just thinking with two neravals gone , he may end up with maragatha vallim which usually musicians dont sing with neraval .He taking up the bigggie subramanyaya namastE was a surprise . May be bit more neraval sangathis would have been better, but overall the kambodhi was well done.

The best to me was his brindavana saranga pallavi, he kept up the intensity with a fine taanam after alapana . Certainly lot of intereting pidis came in R and T with his voice reaching extreme sowkhyam and had so much vocal muscle and power. The pallavi neraval was bit short but the ragamaligas was fantastic - singing ragas with fast swaras in ganamurthi, kedaragowla and shivaranjani is definitely off beat in my opinion but with so many patterns i really enjoyed. If i can say "kalpana" at its best in ragamaliga swaras and taanam.

Arasi suddhadhanyasi and varugalamO were top picks . I wish the queen is given more due where in her krithis have to find at least a submain status. I did not register gorakkalyan that much- incidentally some time during that time just before nageswaran house there was a temple procession with cymbals that kind of took away my concentration with gorakhkalyan as i was seated near the verandah of nageswaran house. Bharathiar jonpuri and suryaprakash own thillana in suddasarang were well done.

Possibly since i was seated behind the violinist , i did observe few micro shruthi fluctuations between vaidhyanathan tambura and mas violin. I liked mas the best during pallavi, hamsanandi and nalinakanthi. KAmbOdhi return was not that layered in intense carnatic sangathis- a shade of little excess folkish like tone.

Both the percussionist were brilliant. The young bharadwaj -disciple of UKS is going to make his guru proud . Superb anticipation especially with few fast swaras in kAmbOdhi in sakala , vandita and bhoosarathi - he played wonderfully. shankar gave great support and showed his class. Tani was not very detailed and i am not complaining.

From rasikas team, CRama, ganeshkant , mahavishnu's parents, varsha, kedar(varsha's son) and cacm were there. Two non performing vidwans nick and uday were also there. special thanks to nageswaran who has his unconditional love to CM - he gave his house ,arranged lovely acoustics and was a great host. Thank you sir. Over to other co-rasikas opinion

Overall an excellent concert for 3 hours and 20 mins.

It was a nice experience to listen a concert at close quarters.I listened to RSP a few years back in Musiri's house. He sang a good bhairavi followed by SS swarajathi.I still remember the special TNR sangathi. This concert too was v.good.His hamsAnandi, kambodhi and brin.sar.( should I say brindAvani ?)were beautifully stuffed.RSP showed the same enthusiasm off the stage also.I like his smiling countenance. The accompanists did a great job to make the experience memorable.Only through Rajesh's write up I knew the presence of other rasikas. We could have been introduced.Enjoyed listening to a concert amidst fellow rasikas.

Arasi's composition sounded nice.Hope she herself tuned that.By the by the RTP was in thisra thripudai.

Thanks, Ganeshkant :)
A pity I wasn't there. Otherwise, I would have introduced you to the ones I know.

All my songs come with a tune. It's the tALA in a few of them which they have to figure out themselves :)
You were there at that CD release of my songs (vol:2 by Neela Ramgopal) or for Sumitra Nitin's? Neela has sung vandE tuNai tandE enaik kAkkum kandanE in that. She sang it in the concert too.

Rajesh,
It is vandE, not vandEn. Thanks for suggesting 'sub-main' status for my songs. For my part, I'd be happy if they sing them at all :)

Suryakaprakash,
Thanks as always for showing interest in my songs and including them in your repertoire :)

An enjoyable evening with fellow rasikas and very good music. It was enlightening speech of Dr.VKV more specifically about UN concert of MS . The concert of Surya Praksh that followed was excellent. I liked the start with Sree Raghuvara Sugunalaya. A song which was very popular a few decades back, more particularly in Kerala. I have heard that GNB used to sing this with great verve. But not heard in concerts these days. So happy that Suryaprakash chose to commence the concert with this song instead of any varnam or Ganesa song. The second song also is a very rare one. I have heard on old record of this song- May be DKP, Not sure. Then happy with Sree Subramanyaya Namaste- instead of the oft repeated song of that school- Kana kann koti or Thiruvadi saranam. He did full justice to the alapana, neraval and swarams. Towerng with the RTP. A three hours twenty minutes concert without a minute of sag. Very few people have the calibre to present such long concerts. Arasi's song- very nice. I think I have not heard this song before in any concert. The accompanists provided very good support. Thanks to Nageswaran Sir.

Thanks to Mr and Mrs Nageswaren for their hospitality, and to Suryaprakash and his team for the music.

I had planned to see Suryaprakash probably twice during December, but in the end I only saw him for about fifteen minutes. Yesterday evening evened up the balance on that, with a full three-hour-plus concert. I know that this is nothing exceptional for him, as he likes a concert to be of three hours duration, and has given four-hour concerts. He has the energy, he has the music in his head. He likes also to present an RTP and did so with great gusto yesterday. The RTP did not feel time-restricted at all. The thanum was the gem of the concert for me. Instrumental music is supposed to follow vocal, but, for thanum perhaps, the veena rules, and Suryaprakash seemed to get the quality of the plucked string during the faster moments.

Before the concert, we had a short meet/introduction session, but people were arriving for some time after that, so we did not get to know the names of everybody. The point was made that there are many members in Chennai who do not attend meets, and also the counterpoint that, whilst some prefer anonymity and wish to preserve it, many others may not care to attend meets, but are quite happy to meet in concerts around town.

After the concert, I had the pleasure of being dropped a few minutes' walk from my house by Suryprakash, and having the company of his parents and him for trip --- and the honour of holding the tambura on my lap --- which made me a little nervous, as, although I have held and carried veenas in the past, I don't recall holding a tambura.

some minor corrections. RM swarams in RTP- second ragam was Kedaragowla and not Yadukulakambodi. Arasi's song is in Sudhadhanyasi. Thillana was own composition of Suryaprakash.

The lovely Kamboji alapana made the day for me...I was tearing up in some parts. Kamboji from the MMI school does that to me. Surya built on the bani and added his modern touches and made it delightful. Also enjoyed the Bhairavi kriti...don't hear it often.

Unfortunately I had to slip out at 7:30 sharp because of a prior commitment ... which meant I had to miss Sri Subrahmanyaya Namaste :(.

nageswaran sir -Bale Bale Besh recording .

'All
We all are busy if you have time just for just 30 minutes -Hear the hamsAnandi first . Many years ago when I sliced the data as best sub main number(I gave Pahi jagath janani in Mudhra sabha about 7 or 8 years ago with suryaprakash singing with raja rao sir as best sub main). This nageswaran house hamsanandi is great but I have heard greater mudhra hamsanandi of his.But to me in the concert this is the top pick.

If you have another 36 minutes hear the pallavi the last is mishra shivaranjani (not shivaranjani as I have wrongly posted before).Hear how this young Bharathwaj is giving gumki like touches converting mrudu agam to tabla - like his extraordinary super star guru UKS with superb support from MAS and fellow forumite nerkunam shankar . Ofcourse kambOdhi main is a biggie main that is worth hearing.

Attn Thenpaanan,
You have defined Voice Culture which is a combination of atleast Shruthi Suddham ,Harmonics and many more parameters . What is your say with respect to voice culture when you hear this hamsanandi that was uploaded by nageswaran in the previous post . Do let me (us)know- I am just curious. ??
