G Madhavan is a name that i heard some time about 8 to 10 years back . I did not have a chance to hear his concert or any of his recording in online or TV/Radio media . As such everything about Madhavan was new to me his face , his voice, his manodharam, his krithis etal even though I had a rough mental map about the concert as he was a DKJ student

I asked him if by any chance if he went out of sight of madras or was he a vidwan who has his domicile elsewhere . He said he is very much chennaiite with his confident smile and also told he is a software professional having a setup in chennai . I was mentally thinking that he needs some big godfather to lift his career up, I am talking about musical career not software career .What happened 2 hours and 45 minutes before that .

G madhavan started in a bit of restrained fashion in KAnadA varnam . The varnam was not so pounding and KAnadA was gentle and even in second speed i felt hey madhavan why cant you sing bit more convicingly in second speed . Asaveri - Suddaseemanthani and those cluster of ragas with krithis by sadhguru gives me goosebumps ,the krithi was great the goosebump got punctured as he did not sing any swaras . I wish i was born roughly 100 years back - then i would have written ariyakudi what is the point in having a #2 drop krithi with only a standalone krithi.

Simmhendra madhyamam was lovely .I said to him at the end it was a simmhendra madhyamam krithi by KV Srinivasa iyengar he said it was thyagaraja . That does not matter - semmangudi sang this krithi and took to himalayan heights . He sang with passion and I found a touch point of the first manaseega influence of mahavidwan TN Seshagopalan. My mind was thinking hey there are bunch of musicians in their learning years in 80's and 90's who have steadfastly followed TNS as a manaseega guru. THe neraval was well done in simmhendramadhyamam , the DKJ diction met with TNS open throated musical articulation.

ArungirinAthar comes up with a bunch of long list of thamizh words towards the end with only phrase perumAle being clearly audible . Arunagirinathar was also dropped with a bunch of long list of thamizh words in kandar anubhoothi by DKJ and VIjaySiva much before main. Madhavan faithfully followed and I as usual failed to hear even two words . There were words like thagumO... enthayum... thiruvAi ... karuvAi , I felt like i was seated in the rapid fire Quiz time of siddhartha basu . I knew the answer of a raga and before it came out from my nabhi to my mouth , i lost them and came another super duper of thamizh words. My Dear carnatic musicians what is the point in singing so much of thamizh phrases where it become musicless prose - arunagirinathar is still not understood even by one musician.

TNS manaseega influence continued with Madhavan singing shree sathyanarayanam . IT was vilambit and he sang well- go for it was my internal call with gnana nanda mayam neraval but madhavan just sang the krithi. Certainly he did well there and the muse of subhapantuvarali was enjoyable with a superb dikshitar krithi.

The melakartha 65 came and went fast , three prathis in the same concert but the melakartha 65 was just used as a small vicks drop and I am glad it went that way. The swaras in kalyani were not done that well by Madhavan.

KAmbOdhi was another open throated vocal honesty. keep it up madhavan , the ideas were neat and packaged very well . I felt with the way he started that he may not sing so much of vistaramAna alapana but I was wrong . He sang beautifully the kAmBodhi. Veena kuppaiyer kOniyadina gives a run for money for other trinity krithis of KamBOdhi. Loved his neraval clean diction one can guess his school of DKJ right there. Swaras could have had more mileage my mind was running ga ma pa mA gA and he did not sing anything hovering on those , little more away from madhyama to more mEl kalam would have made my day .

The next raga was not the full stop raga . IT was commas . there was two commas one before subhapantuvarali which is arunachala kavirayar kamas inda vibheeshana lanka puri rajam , and the other neelakanta sivan teruvedhu eppo , both are fraternal kamas twins and I liked both.

THe best of tukkada was his lovely slokham krishnAya vasudevaya . my tubelight head flickered from bahudari to nattai then with a short memory jog i got JOG . What a lovely raga , i could get another TNS typecast when he sang smara varam varam which is a TNS special.

sharada bhujangam is by adishankara and tuned by RKSK , here I am not complaining like AGN. IT was music filled lyrics and the tune was lovely. Madhavan put a disclaimer that he is singing and may make few errors , he forgot few raga maliga phrases like shyama he traversed keeravani phrase few times and he sang well not upto vijay siva standard there.

Our organizer told madhavan to sing a RTP in his opening speech , but madhavan could not sing that . He sang kalyana vasantham raga alapana and said he will sing krithi . Nageswaran sir was determined and still asked him to sing a short taanam and pallavi , but madhavan moved on to suttum vizhi , a ragamaliga starting with kalyana vasantham and a multitude of ragas. TNS tape is very noteworthy for this song suttum vizhi kannamma madhavan faithfully folllowed that tape.

Kumbakonam M R Gopinath had a home ground advantage , He was in his home town house of kumbakonam nageswaran. HIs play was neat and gave a lot of air time to madhavan . Shertalai ananthakrishnan has a lot of nadham and sowkhyam , bit more faster patterns in KambOdhi would have been a notch better , but certainly both accompanist did a great job . His tani was balanced well - considering that he did not have a upapakkavadhyam he kept me more engaged with mrudu nAdham.


CRAMA gave a 2 minute speech at the end of tani . From rasikas team , we were just four Crama, ganeshkant ,rajesh and man of the series Nageswaran . Musiri grandson Musiri Thyagarajan and his wife also attended. The intimacy of artists and more importanly that extra 45 minutes than the usual 2 hour crap. The musicians surely get into the best of moods and they give sustained musical muse .

Madhavan's greatest asset is his open throated singing expecially when he sings in upper octave, I didnot hear an iota of shouting - many dont get that . Madhavan is aesthetically a cross of DKJ and TNS as two major axis and he has enough personal artistry . Thank you to our mahanubhavulu -nageswaran to bring in a new entarO mahanubhAvulu - madhavan.

OVerall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 45 minutes with 5 mins interruption for speech.

I have heard Madhavan over the AIR Madras and I have always liked his concerts. But this is the first time listening to his live concert. The concert was really excellent. His learning under stalwarts like DKJ, KVN, and the influence of his manaseega guru TNS kept him in good stead. His sincerity, open throated singing, pronounciation, manodharmam, proportion all were appreciable. The songs selection was also good. Natajanaparipalaka and Koniyadina na pai- I have not heard in any live concert for the last ten years. These songs require perfection in sangathis, confidence for execution, and modharmam to embellish them. Madhavan did a commendable job. Nageswaran Sir requested for RTP in Kalyanavasantham. He could not do that for want of time. Prior to the main song, there were many songs which consumed more time. The concert did not suffer because of no RTP. The post thani songs were all good. Two songs- Krishnaya Vasudevaya slokam from Vishnu Sahasranamam followed by Smaravaram in Jog and the Ragamalika Chuttum vizhi chuddar than starting in Kalyanavasantham showed his appreciation for the patantharam of TNS and it was faithfully delivered. Thanks to Nageswaran Sir for organising the concert.

Ariyakudi never told that you need not sing swaram for the No 2 song. IN fact, in his concerts, unless No 2 is Endaro Mahanubhavulu, he sang swarams for songs in MMG, Harikambodi, Panthuvarali, Athana, Sudhasaveri etc. I am in agreement with you that swarams for No 2 song adds pep to the concert in the start itself. But artistes do have their own calculations.

Rajesh, Have you heard Semmangudi singing this song in any live concert. I have heard only one record of Semmangudi singing this song. If you have got any concert, pl share.
