It sounds too close to Mohanam and somewhat different from Gopalaka Pahi.
Is the ‘techinique’ applicable only to a few ragas? Is it perhaps not applicable to rakti ragas? What happens to gamakam?

Yes, but is this not different? Are they not using the same notation as the original varnam? They just change the ri and da in the notation, that is what I understood.
