God and the Curator
God is busy today, receiving many in a queue, as if he is an ATM on 9 Nov. 2016.
God asks each one his/her name, profession, looks at him/her keenly, and sends to heaven or hell, different grades.
1. Listener - Heaven, without 4G or Wifi.
2. Rasika - Hell, with long term free access to rasikas.org
3. Musician with Doctorate - Heaven music school teaching job, no students.
4. Good musician, money-minded - Hell, performing for rasikas who bicker and blog constantly.
5. Sabha secretary - Hell Sabha secretaryship, God alone knows what the hell goes on there.
6. Music critic - back to earth.
7. Award winning musician cum writer cum social reformer - UN of Heaven and Hell, where nothing gets done anyway
8. Mridangam banger - lifetime employment to beat the clouds over Bangalore and Chennai to cause excess rain.
9. Music Curator - says "Excuse me", goes looking for His dictionary.

Those who were standing in that ATM - most of them were paid proxies - making money on the De-Mo - certainly will be heaven the following days. So don't create tacit atrocity literature - that is subterfuge!

Yes true.. I am writing to a lot ... those with a pen and able to only dash - more power to them!!! I am sure some people would go a notch below and underline it as well and some people also may add an over line and frame it!

those without comprehension for dash
and those without endurance to dash
with no courage or conviction to clash
with pseudo liberal drivel of trash
come out swinging to bash
we nevertheless continue our bash
even if you mercilessly smash
for those who underscore with dash
and for those who frame it with another dash

if only such case ending evolution happens in tamizh lot of kritis will acquire structural/syllabic perfection for music!
Will the Harvard project throw some light on this?! Oh they are capable of only curating! Not chemmai-fying or sanskritizing!
A R Rehman is known to have said in an interview that more complex the music, the more simpler the syllables have to be! May be he is re-affirming yati viSrama - kriti lakshna of tyAgarAja.
Doing it in English may be useful to Gautam Tejas Ganesan, but for us?

Dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH/dash for short; and the Dash diet) recommend that we dial down the dashes of salt in our diets for well being....Along those lines, less dashing, bashing, and less inchoateness, and incoherence, but more sabash-ing should also contribute to well being!

Acronyms do not exist in tamizh or Sanskrit or any Indian language. We have vigraha vAkyas - more effective way of compounding!

Speaking of acronyms - some English acronyms were expanded into tamizh with great (humorous) effect:
Circa 1940s or 50s or 60s before bus nationalization in TN (must be):
There used to be two bus transport firms: TVS and TST in Trichy.
T.S.T - tallu saar tallu - the buses often had to be pushed by some of the passengers to get them started.
T.V.S : talla vENdAm saar - no such problems.

Re: God and the Curator
Shanakarank,
I don't agree that in Tamizh there are no acronyms.
After all TN invented the system of initials standing for people and places. And so much so that you will find the initials alone spelt in English type.
TVS, TNS, TRS, TMS, TMK, TNK, TNRP, GNB, MMI, SSI, ARI, KVN, MDR, LGJ, PR, UKS, TS, TVG,MSS, DKP, MLV, BJR, KBMK, RKSK, RKM, A2B,...
My thumb is paining already.
I believe there was once a great Andhra musician who went to pursue success in Madras. He hailed from a direct line of Thyagaraja disciples.
He returned a couple of years later, bemoaning the lack of any initial breakthrough. His kinsmen asked him what he meant. He said his name, Kallapragada Komti Kartiveeryaarjuna Rao Kedareshwara Karuna Kanta Rao was an initial disaster, KKKKKKR.
The Madras cognoscenti wouldn't settle for Kanta Rao-garu. No initial, no respect, they said.
He was suggested an assignment in Sri Lanka. He said he couldn't fill up the passport application form, which allows only 48 character spaces for a name.

Re: God and the Curator
I have no idea how dashes and commas came in here, but I don't see any correctly used there. It is not difficult to look such things up if you didn't get taught at school, or, like me, have forgotten. Dashes are fine as a form of parenthesis --like this-- but we are faced with a problem. Hyphens are not dashes. We can do dashes in handwriting, typesetting, or even a word processor (doesn't Word substitute an em dash for a a double hyphen? I forget). So, where we are restricted to the keyboard characters, we don't actually have dashes.shankarank wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 20:41 Those who were standing in that ATM - most of them were paid proxies - making money on the De-Mo - certainly will be heaven the following days. If you really want to know about this stuff, you could pick up a copy of Hart's Rules. I haven't even seen it since about 1998, when I did this stuff for a living. I'm going to check out this PDF: join me!
What acronyms? I see only one among those abbreviations. And yes, some common usage is just plain horribly wrong, even though it is common. That is how language goes down the drain.TVS, TNS, TRS, TMS, TMK, TNK, TNRP, GNB, MMI, SSI, ARI, KVN, MDR, LGJ, PR, UKS, TS, TVG,MSS, DKP, MLV, BJR, KBMK, RKSK, RKM, A2B,...

Re: God and the Curator
Try this one. it is correct.
Dictionaries, in the end, need to reflect the current usage of a word, however degraded that may be, but to encourage calling initials and abbreviations acronyms. which is fashionable, is still wrong. What's so hard about the proper words? They are hardly obscure. Let's fight the rot, not help it on its way!
I find Google define really great. It answers my need to know correct spellings and definition. I very, very seldom find any need to argue with it. Quick and easy.
I don't know if it examines any local settings, but if not, it also shows how the sometimes-supposed differences between British and American languages are greatly exaggerated. And the actual differences are interesting rather than annoying. Except the stuff that comes from the sales and management-jargon people, much of which is rubbish. Which brings us back to curate!

Nick, Ok. There are bigger things to argue about, settle and curate.
Let's agree on initialism. A lovely word, that rhymes with nationalism, orientalism, syllogism, socialism.
Oxford contrasts NASA acronym with OECD initialism.

Re: God and the Curator
I'll bargain for less of the ism!
I've always been curious that, even in a page of Tamil script, initials are roman. But people tell me it just doesn't work to take the first Tamil character of each name. Sadly, I'm too poor a scholar to get to be able to understand.
The desire to abbreviate is another matter. Previously I have only come across rare instances of people who come to be known by their initials alone. How did that start? And if it doesn't work in Tamil script, did it happen before English here?

Shankarank,
That reminds me.
A couple went to a Sadhguru for counsel.
The guru discourses about metaphysical synonyms, esoteric eat a blessing and exotic contortions.
Finally, he asked, Rhetorically:
1. Naari means what!?!
SHAKTI!
The wife was pleased as punch, and beamed knowingly at the livid husband.
The guru went on:
2. Purush means what?!?
SAHAN SHAKTI!
* I know there are many forumites who think only in Tamizh. Apologies. Naari=woman. Shakti=power , cosmic power, enormous power. Purush=man Sahan Shakti=ability to withstand onslaught of that power!
Remember Sri Mathrubhootham of the Hindu.

Grand truths will be stated only with brevity accompanied with an air of profundity (re-purposed as sage emoticon). It is designed to draw expositions and allegories , stories for centuries.
People will expound according to their stature, state, and vAsanAs!
And that scheme by itself is antithetical to the idea behind the title and the opening post - including the concept of heaven and hell!
