Artistes and Concert Venue

Post by sureshvv »

Some concert venues seem to bring the best out of certain artistes. Even the top level artistes like Sanjay, Abhishek, Sudha etc. are able to raise the level of performance at certain venues, not necessarily the ones with the best comfort or acoustics. I am sure that this has been the pattern even for past generations.

So this is the topic: Which venue brings out the best in your favorite artiste? Why do you think this is so? Any examples or specific details appreciated.

I will chime in with my 2 bits periodically. :)

Sanjay , Sowmya, TNS have sung great concerts @ Bharat Kalachar - something I have not heard elsewhere.

Sanjay with Neyveli Venkatesh and Varadu ( IIRC) : dAcu kOvalEna, jagadISvari dayai puri

Sowmya - Embar Kannan, poongulam Subramanium - I remember the mOhana rAgam and the reply by Embar Kannan was remarkable!

TNS - Varadu, GurvayUr dorai, PurushOttaman - began with mArgazhi tingal.. Akshaya linga vibhO main - impressive neraval and svarams @ badari vana. He utilized the 3 mAtra ( or akshara however you want it) eduppu so well - I had to write that, that interval is timeless for him. Final kORvai consisted of splitting the 7 with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 syllables!!

All early millenium!

Sanjay and Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha is another terrific combination. Add Kambodhi to the mix and it becomes unbeatable. Definitely top of my list for the season.

Sanjay at Margazhi Maha Utsavam is also a not to be missed affair.

As regards P.S. svAmi sabha, yes there was one Sanjay with T.S - kamalambAm BhajarE - memorable one.

More on the Bharat Kalachar concerts that I heard around 2002.

Sanjay 's and Sowmya's were resonably filled in all rows.

With the TNS concert , I brought the highest priced one, that put me in a section of some 10-15 rows - where I was the only one. Some 10 empty rows in front of me in the VIP section where Mrs YGP and her patrons, and may be full time members of her Sabha were sitting. 10 -15 rows behind me were empty as well. Ardent TNS fans and their tchu-tchus were audible from back - back - rows :)

I was the odd man out - I was pretty much a statue, doing tALam religiously - so much so that the watchman who sells tickets told me post concert, he ain't seen a rasika like me ever! Something to cherish!

Yet some insiders - of the very very inside world of the Carnatic music ( from MSS Kalki family) were still saying if TNS sings there will be crowd. They could not get out of their "my favorite classical musician did not draw crowd" mentality!
