need clarification on raga mudra in diksithar's krithi

Post by ajaysimha »

here is the krithi:

veera hanumathE
raagam: kaanaDaa
22 kharaharapriya janya
Aa: S R2 G2 M1 D N2 S
Av: S N2 P M1 G2 M1 R2 S

taaLam: roopakam
Composer: Dikshitar
Language: Sanskrit

pallavi

veera hanumaTe namO namaha
maaru tatanayaa namO namaha
anupallavi

saraseeruha vadanaa ||
shree raamacan- || -dra sharanaa ||
(citta swaram)

citta swaram

r,rs rpg, gmrs || r,gm dnS, dnSR ||
GMR, RSRS nRSR || nSdn RSnp mgmr ||
r,rs rpg, gmrs || r,gm dnS, dnSR ||
GMR, RSRS nRSR || nSdn RSnp mgmr ||
(veera)

caraNam

kroora raaksha saadi haraNa
sarva vidyaa dhaana nipuNa
varamantra vinaasha "karaNa
kapi" vinuta guruguha smaraNa
(citta swaram)

taking raga mudra in two ways:
1.karaNa kapi- might refer to ragams 'kaapi-kanada' or 'karnataka kaapi'
2.kapi- refering to ragam 'kaapi'

As we all know that diksitar uses Raga mudra in his kritis.
Raga mudra used in this krithi is Karana kapi
....which means it might have been Karnataka kapi.
Few people render it in kapi
Others in kaanada
Few others say Karna kapi in diksitar system is kapi-kanada ragam
Which one is the correct...??

Not all of MD krithis have raga mudra. Thodi krithis for example.

Kapi is mentioned as such in SSP, under Sri Mela. Vekatachalapathe is notated in the SSP.

Not sure it is correct to correlate "kapi" with "kApi".

"karaNa" with "karnAtaka" sounds even more far fetched.

So this may be a kriti without a raga mudra.

thanks suresh for clarifying,
as you rightly mentioned , the
<http://guru-guha.blogspot.in/2008/06/di ... -raga.html >also mentions same info:
"vIra hanumatE - rAgaM - karNATaka kApi - tALaM rUpakam"

Can there be influence of "BHAJANA SAMPRADAYAM" to sing this krithi in kaanada ragam to represent bakthi bhavam of hanumanji

Karnataka Kapi is a raga that has diverged into a set of allied ragas, ranging from Hindustani Kapi to Kaanada and this is not a "recent" development. I am sure there are many influences and non-reasons :D
