Flautists: Jayanth and Sruti Sagar

Post by sureshvv »

Two young and accomplished flautists set out for even more greatness.

Comparisons are odious - but as rasikas that is what we do best.

Very different styles with emphasis on different aspects of the music.

Sruti Sagar plays with a single flute for the entire concert and is more into reproducing the vocal style.

Jayanth seems more to enjoy the laya aspects more, especially starting from the Varnam itself.

Feel free to add your observations/objective critiques.

Suresh,
I also feel both are very good flautists!

I feel JBSS offers a more conventional and happy fare without gimmicks.

JAJ is exploring new spaces and surely has been mentored by SS and it shows.

For me the flute itself is an instant turn on. I have gone to programs of ensembles and dances just to listen to JBSS. So!🙂

Both are the future of Carnatic flute. Some comparisons:

1. JBSS seems to use a higher pitch G flute (much like Flute Mali) a lot of times but occasionally uses a lower D flute. JAJ sticks to the now standard D#. JAJ in fact uses the same flute in all the concerts, a flute that he has got to know extremely well.

2. JBSS also plays extensively for dances and accompanies his vocalist guru. JAJ sticks to being a solo concert flutist.

3. JBSS is a lot more overtly religious. JAJ is more worldly.

4. Both have music in their family genes.

5. Both were child prodigies.

6. Both are Mali-inspired. JAJ 's grandfather (vidwan TS Sankaran) was Mali's closest sishya.

7. JAJ puts a lot of effort in bringing out the maximum tonal quality. His playing is totally hissless. JBSS puts more emphasis on reproducing vocal elements.

8. Thankfully both use very little, if any, gimmicks, unlike some others.

Good luck to both of them.

While Jayanth is a talented flautist who plays enjoyable concerts, I think comparing his music with Sruthi Sagar's is rather absurd. Sruthi Sagar's playing has that very vocal music-like quality which I haven't seen in any other flautist than the great Mali himself.

Is this statement necessary to compare ?

Both Sruthisagar and Jayanth are amazing. Sruthisagar was a winner at IITM Saarang where the Bhairavi he played, with some amazing gamakas and vocal phrases, made me aware of new dimensions to the raga that I had not observed or imagined earlier - it was only a question of who was number 2 that day.

Jayanth also has performed at Music Club and the musical aesthetic he created that day was sublime (IIRC It was Nagumomu that was the main item, and it's still in my ears).

The future of the Carnatic flute is in very good hands alright.

Yes and No.

Yes because these days, appearance seems to have a lot of weight.

No because what is most important is spiritual inclinations (CM is after all spiritual music) irrespective of appearance. Mali hardly looked religious, yet who can deny that some of his music is not spiritual?
