SKB memorial concerts 2018

Post by kamalamba »

Dear fellow rasikas

I am about to start the preparations for the coming december concerts. The fifth of this series.

However, a problem is that our favorite location "eAmbalam" in Kalakshetra colony is no longer available, since the school has moved elsewhere.

I would like suggestions in Chennai for "smallish" places that give a chamber concert atmosphere while being able to hold ~100 people and not charging exorbitant amounts (eAmbalam, thanks to the generosity of Sri TV Ramprasadh did not charge us anything).

I am also thinking of artistes.

Suggestions for up-and-coming artistes welcome.

Regards
Mohan

Hello Mohan,

(Sorry I did not get to visit you in UK)

One place comes to mind, but someone else will have to provide the name and organisation. Here are the clues!

It is a garden environment, behind a house in C P Ramaswamy Road, close to Nilgiris and opposite Citibank. I think it was set up by Aishwarya Shankar, her father, and others. It might have been the house of her first guru.

It was inaugurated last year and concerts were held there. There is a need for mosquito repellent (but where, here, isn't there!) but otherwise, the ambience is perfect and it is very central. I don't think that I have any contact number, but I find one I'll send it to you.

There will probably be season concerts there, but perhaps they may have a spare day.

(And here's my first request/recommendation: vocalist K Dharini :D)

In rainy days , we were experiencing mosquitos, since the ambience is surrounded bu natural garden. In the recent concerts - We have organic mosqito repellent incense sticks and used nochi n neem oil spray for plants. These measures yielded good results in the recent concerts.

Mohan, what news?

I wonder if you have been in touch with Aishwarya, or found somewhere else?

Aishwarya, good to know you are winning against the mossies! The last time that I was at an open-air concert at Kalakshetra, I was surprised to find that burning neem leaves was effective, and that it caused no pain to my lungs, which are very sensitive to most smoke. Your garden venue is beautiful.

Happy to hear from you, Mohan. More rasikAs will attend I hope, considering the venue being easy to reach.
Hope I can make it to Chennai this year--in which case, I will be there.

Nick,
Look forward to being at a pleasant place like that...

Hi Rshankar
I don't know how it differs from the traditional veena, but this name was given to me by Kannan.
I am looking forward to seeing what it is and how it sounds.
Perhaps someone else may know more about it.

Hi Friends
What is the easiest way to live stream the concerts. Many people outside of Madras have requested that I live stream them.
Thanks for any inputs.

Dear all

This event was a terrific success. A number of forumites were there (NickH, Sridhar_Ranga, Jayaram, Rajeshnat). Some of them may review the concerts.

At times we had up to 100 attendees!

I need to mention that the venue; Indira Ranganathan trust, was simply outstanding. It is of a perfect size for such an event. Plus the trustees and the people who manage are devoted to the pursuit of music and so everyone was working together seamlessly to make the event a success. This is a fantastic location for -smallish- groups where the audience and the artistes can have a nice rapport. Special thanks to NickH, Aishwarya Shankar, and Sriram for making this happen.

I have 200 MB files of the concerts.

If someone can tell me how to share these, I will do so (so long as the artistes are OK with it, which I am checking now).

Regards
Mohan

It was great. I arrived during the first concert, and left just after 4pm.

Thank you for all the good music... And the delicious food!

In my limited knowledge of Chennai venues, I don't think it has a competitor. Other halls, even Ragasudha, are too big, and private houses, even if willing to share, too small.

I don't know if Artery make their place available to others, but when that is more house-concert size.

Happy to have helped. Actually I met Aishwarya & co at a wedding, and they mentioned that they were having difficulty contacting you... I was able to give your phone numbers. Lucky chance that formed a link in the chain :)

Thank you All ! We are glad to be part of SKB Memorial concerts 2018. Special thanks to Nick for sharing our contact with Shri Mohan.
We have just started slowly & steadily. Based on rasikas feedback, we have done some sizable improvements in terms of seating ( Ampi Theatre like ) set up withing the natural ambiance in the Garden, Covering the lawn with Manglore Tiles and a good audio systems( Two Bose L1) within our limited self-funded budget.
It is encouraging to see good reviews on our venue. Thank you all again ! Keep sharing the feedback for improvements. We will try to improve and enhance the listening experience.

Thanks!
