Melharmony blending Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, Bach and Holst

Post by asangeetha »

Came across this piece recently, an example of true innovation that blends two great systems of music together without compromise!

Check out this Melharmonic recreation of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi’s Udaja gopa sundara in Umabharanam. Created by Sangita Kalanidhi Chitravina N Ravikiran, the composition derives inspiration from Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, Bach and Holst!

A good one, combining discipline and abandon. We have heard many hours of Ravikiran's Melharmony music over the years--thanks to the Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival and to other You Tube clippings. Two things that strike me on watching this. 1:As usual, Ravikiran's display of his mastery without dressing it up with his star quality. He's one among the players--his maturity in music is only focused on the music which is being made. John McLAughlin comes to mind. Music comes first to them. 2: Yes, I have seen swaying and dramatic movements among a few in melharmony performances, but this one was a bit different. The bowers all, it seemed to me, moved in rather a Carnatic way? That's how I felt, anyway!

Sounds great. Sounded like Poornachandrika to me but I will look up Umabharanam
