Classical Music based films - the good & the botched up

Post by jodha »

We do read the mention of the film Shankarabharanam by our members as a trend setter that really made even a cart vendor hum Sankara.....
The music was catchy the story had enough emotions to make it a hit.
But subsequently they made Thyagayya directed by Babu with Somayajulu as the lead.SPB had sung as usual with lot of emotion that sounded good to laymen but drew flak from pundits.Thyagayya was a flop. They too screen this film once in a while in TV.When I see it now it looks more like a documentary may be the reason for its failure.
But 2 tamil films that created great expectations but bombed at the box office were Thodi ragam & Mridhanga chakravarthy.the reasons could be poor casting, bad music and dull story.
I feel there came good successful films in malayalam like his highness abdullah.there were other films too whose names I don't remember esp.the film that had music I think by Bombay Ravi that had ragasudharasa (Andolika)sung by Dasettan.
My knowledge about kannada films is absymal.

I can think of Bharatham and Sargam in Malayalam. And you forgot the classic Sindhu Bhairavi in Tamil.

there was a malayalam movie named "Gaanam" quite some time back(1980s). It had V Dakshinamoorthy as the music director. BMK and Yesudas sang at least 2 to 3 songs in that.

I am sure all the forum members are aware of the film "Vani" which is a Kannada musical language drama film released in the early 1940s. The film was interestingly produced by and starred Chowdiah himself, including a famous clip of Chembai, Chowdiah, and Palghat Mani Iyer in concert performing "Nikhila Papani" in Shanmukhapriya ragam.

As it seems , it should be a musical movie .

'Swathi Thirunal' is a movie in Malayalam based on the life of the composer.

There is one Tamil movie (I don't remember the name of the movie) featuring Sri KVN and he has sung just one song.

Yeah that’s a classic. Comparable to Shankarabharanam. The movie got so many youngsters interested in classical music. Maheshji, singer in that movie and my beloved guru, has been trying to make classical music accessible and cool to the younger crowd in Maharashtra.
