The Parampara series promoted by Vedanata Ramanujam has been promoting numerous programmes in the city. The twin programme on 28th Nov had concerts of Brinda Manickavasakan at 4 pm and R Suryaprakash at 6.15 pm.
Here's a brief review of the R Suryaprakash's concert:

1. Begada- Vallabhaanayakasya- Dikshirtar
2. Pantuvarali-Sarasaksha paripaalaya-Swati Tirunal
3. Balahamsa-Guruguaadanyam Na Jaaney-Dikshitar
4. Darbar-Sree Venugopala deva nee vaa- Koteswara Iyer
5. Kapianarayani-Sarasa saama daana-Tyagaraja
6. Kamboji-Tiruvadisaranam- Gopalakrishna Bharati (Main) followed by Tani
7. RTP in Simhendramadhyamam- Tisra Triputa (Unadhupaadam tunaiye, Oraarumugane)
8. Ragamaalika Viruttham – Aanaadhaselvatthu- Perumaal Tirumozhi – Kulasekhara aazhwar
Bagesree , Sindhubhairavi
9. Sindhubhairavi- Venatachalanilayam-Purandaradasa
10. Jaunpuri- Paaruikkulley Nalla Naadu- Bharatiyaar

It was an engaging yet standard fare by R Suryaprakash known for his Madurai Mani Iyer baani. Vallabhaanayakasya in Begada after an invocatory sloka on Lord Vighneswara was the first kriti with a few rounds of Kalpanaswaras well returned by Nagai Sriram. Pantuvarali came in next with brisk neraval and swaras at Bhaamini samudayaasaya mohana padmanabha.

The prize piece of the concert to me, was Dikshitar’s Vibhakti kriti :Guruguhaadanyam Na Janey in Balahamsa. Suryapraksh rendered a good aalapana taking care to hold the rare scale strictly adhering to its course (SRMPNS SNDPMRMGS). I was hearing this kriti first time in a concert and Suryaparakash deserves special thanks. Next was again a rare kriti in Darbar-a composition of Koteswara Iyer on Lord Krishna.

Sarasasaamadaana in Kapinarayani is common in every concert of Madurai Mani Iyer school and the singer did full justice to it. The torrent of niraval and swaras at Hitavumaata was well received by the audience.
Tiruvadisaranam in Kamboji was the main with a free-flowing aalaapana, niraval and swaras at the time tested passage ‘Adutthu vandha ennai thallalaagaadhu’. Sriram on violin was quite at ease receiving and returning the vocalist’s deliveries to the satisfaction of all.

V Balaji is perhaps one of the prominent torch bearers of Sri Palghat Raghu and his Mridangam play was marked by azhuttham, variety and sukham. No domination while accompanying vocalist. He and KV Gopalakrishnan (Kanjira)exhibited perfect coordination and the Tani was a scholarly one.

Suryaprakash invariably includes a RTP in his concerts. Here it was in Simhendramadhyamam – the Pallavi sahityam was Unadhupaadam tunaiye, Oraarumugane in Tisra Triputa (with eduppu at Moonu Thalli of second Veechu). Ragamalika swaras were in Nalinakaanti and Srotaswini – the latter (a Janya of Keeravaani) could be described colloquially as suddhadhanyasi with kaakali nishadham. (A few Tamil songs including Ilaiyaraja’s are famous in this scale)

A verse from perumal Tirumozhi which began in Bagesree moved over to Sindhubhairavi only to land in Venkatachalanilayam to mark the close of the concert.

There was no webcast of this concert (even though the preceding event was aired).

The concert marked the first of Suryaprakash’s in his season 2018 (as duly posted by him in the Facebook). And he probably has made a good start.

Kindly note the following correction in my review above:

The aarohana of Balahamsa is S R M P D S and not as given.
Sorry for the inadvertent error.

Sivaramakrishnan,
Thanks for the review of Suryaprakash's first concert of the season--many more scintillating concerts to follow, no doubt.

Your other typo was amusing--Dik'shirt'er? Wasn't he a shirt-shirker?

:)
Shirts they wear in silk now, some shimmering--
Men musicians do, but music men of yore
'Uniform'ly wore a simple cotton upper cloth
Edged with lines in color--as for the disparity,,
Clash in colors now, I frown:('Humor' me, do!
