We need more tamil songs!

Post by SrinathK »

We need more tamizh songs in CM alright. One zoomed out look tells me that telugu and sanskrit are still dominating the overall scene, given the variety of compositions in them and the fact that the Holy Trinity developed most of our rAgA system.

My main gripe as to why CM is not as popular as it could be is the lack of enough number of Tamizh songs to compete with the Telugu, Sanskrit and Kannada ones - this I'm saying despite the number of tamizh composers we have since the Azhwars and Nayanmars. Tamizh rasikas will be much happier with tamizh songs and even though a lot of things CM comes from Ancient Tamil music, I feel we are still not having enough tamizh songs even now, and we don't get rasikas to listen to more of them. Tamizh songs need to get popularized even more than ever.

As you might have observed, Sanjay has made this his USP over the years.

Here's the idea, can all of you help come up with a good list of only tamil songs (can and should also be film songs if they're carnatic based and bharatanATyam numbers) in the rAgAs and composers of your choice? Some of you are already opening lots of web pages with many popular songs or uploading them on Youtube. It is not necessary to share the links, you could (provided the mods don't mind), but even a list is ok for me. I just need to be able to get them somewhere online - buy, commercial, stream, YT, Sangeethapriya, anywhere else.

These may greatly help introduce CM to more of the tamil population (by which I include people in my own family and circles, especially   - I have observed that lots of people don't listen to CM because they are unaware of how many tamizh CM songs are out there). You can make your list as long as you wish, provided that the collective effort will help cover a few songs in all the ragas. I'll also have a look at the rasikas efforts in translating many a tamizh song on this site.

Alternatively you could help develop the vaggeyakara composer section with tamil composers and that would also be ok. Just make sure to be careful with contemporary artistes, link to commercial channels for commercial albums and try as far as possible for non-commercial recordings. Even a list of tamil composers here would do, I can search with that.

One other idea is just link to other rasikas threads about tamizh music and composers here, so that this becomes a handy reference.

In the process I can also develop this one weak area of mine. Ok, on to the search facility. Let's see, "tamil" throws up 545 pages! Let me see what I can find....

There are lots of people who are learning "music", but not listening to "music" at all.

It seems the prevailing view is Professional musicians are professional musicians. They come and sing and some people are crazy about music and purchase tickets. It is their profession and they get paid.

The former are completely oblivious otherwise to it's history and glory. In fact this aspect I feel is more important , than whether they listen to music or have liking for it or have celebrity musicians that they adore!

You talked about relatives, who are not aware of tamizh songs. Before we talk about "music", should we not find out about what is their view of their language called "tamizh"?

1) is it just a useful language to order tea , haggle with auto-guy and veggie peddler in TN?

2) Or is it that they can "understand" that language - like "I know this language!"?

3) Or is it more like it is their mother tongue? if so, here what is the status of a Mother in their view?

I think these things needs explored as well! I know these are questions that may be insulting to the intelligence of people. But to make progress, we have to downgrade human intelligence a bit.

These kind of questions cannot be discussed , unless they themselves seek answers to such questions. There in lies the issue.

I recently heard in a spiritual discussion ( we were conversing in English!), somebody dismiss the idea of language as merely a means of communication. They were anxious that any discussion about language will quickly turn divisive. They seem more stressed about the prevailing "language" chauvinism , may be a reflection of the reality that their own social circles consist of their own language speakers and they didn't want to cloud the exalted spiritual discussion with all that supposedly divisive stuff.

I didn't quite have the opportunity to retort with another question as to what the hell is communication? Management-speak ( a separate language in itself like legalese) which has made into training material to address communication gaps in corporate workers, has emphasized formally that, what they mean by communication of corporate variety , is that the importance to content is only about 20% and majority of it is tone! Whatever the hell that means!

And English language training instructional material formally introduces term "musical" - yes I really saw it - when it trains children to construct sentences that sound like the famous Dr MLK Jr. quote "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." And there is more like that from Gerard Ford - Republican convention 1996 - "a government that gives you everything you want, is a government that takes everything you have"! By "musical" I guess they mean something that instantly appeals and sways the audience.

Beyond that, the fact that you might , even remotely, consider the possibility of one musician who commands good audience because he sings tamizh songs, instead of lets say his rAgA prowess, in itself is a big progress, whether it is actually true or not.

Along with that other questions spring up, like what is tamizh and what is music , are they separate entities yada yada!

But , but, isn't it known that most of the listeners of CM are already tamizhans!! :D

And as election season draws closer , I cannot but miss quoting the famous Chomsky , the great linguist quotes : "Why do the candidates have to campaign? They just have to simply state what they intend to in writing and have it published"

Shall we begin our journey in CM in tamizh language ( non-film) with two rare tamizh krithis of Shyama Sastry sung by Mrs.Sulochana Pattabiraman and her disciples?
google may give the page.

Please don't link to mio (Music India Online). It's banned by the DoT owing to piracy concerns. Our content policy rules are:

1) Non-commercial recordings from YT or private collections (preferably artistes of the previous generation) - Current performing artistes are a bit of a last resort option. If you think twice about sharing, just tell us to search for it ourselves.
2) Official YT channels of artistes, albums and other creators.
3) Sangeethapriya (that too take care to try for older recordings). The tribute pages are fine, they're the only resource of the kind having all the trinity compositions in one place.
4) Official music streaming sites. There are lots. You may even advise us to subscribe to sites like radioweb if needed. That's fine.
5) Sites of albums like charsur or sa re ga ma or others.
6) Live webcast channels are most welcome.
7) Any film in the last 30-40 years, please either share only from authorized channels or not at all. I think anything over 50 years back is fine. And that's usually where the really classical songs are from.

We are been careful because there was one forum member who was probably a musician who suddenly threatened action against us a decade back (we had to ban him for a while), and another forum member was dragged to court for simply telling a famous musician that he had heard a private recording of his live concert.

Sulochana Pattabhiraman's albums are all up on YT official channels. You may share from there. Or I'll do it this time : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SdzCl_y0F4

KannaDa songs have not been successful in the main stage of Carnatic music. Attempts to do nambikeTTavarilavu or similar numbers as any sub or major item have flopped. It came out as an attempt to stuff trinity based viSrAnti phrases into a soft material and resulted in a stuffed paratha! It formed lumps! And syllables hung in mid-air without the ability to land gracefully or forcefully.

SrI yOga narasimhams attempts also did not bear fruit it looks like!

I am surprised you would even mention that. if tamizh was thought to be not suitable for rAgA treatment of the kutcheri variety ( as if they treated Telugu so nicely - yeah?) and they had silly debates in The Hindu in the 1950(s) , KannaDa is even more at a disadvantage with what I hear as it's case endings.

It seems then, what really is a Carnatic composition, has not really hit hard on people. If we allowed a musicologist to say Mridangam is not music, what else can we expect of ourselves.

With that blast, re-listen to the piLLayAr chuzhi song that I posted again!

In case you missed it, here we discussed the scope of a muttuttANDavar song :

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=31086&p=333627

It should be improved with avoidance of beat hugging at satguru pAdam tEDu, with a half a beat, atIta shift of that line and changing nATTamuDan as nATTattuDan as otherwise , how it is currently, results in impediments to flow of manOdharmam as happens here:

https://youtu.be/OXBn0dXzbt4?t=1508

You can hear the preceding part of that by a rewind, where you will find the verve for the line starting with nAlAm padattil not carrying over to nATTamuDan.

in continuation of songs for jonpuri---the ever-green 'eppo varuvaaro' ...here is a slightly ( very slightly ) modified version rendered by N.C.VASANTHAKOKIOLAM.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.tfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.p ... epponcv.rm
========================================================
and some descriptions.
-
"eppO varuvaarO..’ from vENugaanam. Sung by N.C.Vasantakokilam.
Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s original lines suitably altered by Kambadasan, and set to music by Govindarajulu Naidu.

* * * *

vENugaanam (1941/ Jewel Pictures) was scripted by the legendary K.Ramnoth. Dialogues were written by Ki.Ra. The film was directed by the famed Murugadasa, who had earlier directed films like sundaramoorthi naayanaar (1937). The film starred N.C.Vasantakokilam, V.V.Sadagopan, K.Sarangapani, G.Sakuntala and others.

The film was based on the story of princess Mitravinda, who hears of the wonderful deeds of Lord Krishna and pines for his love. Her determination sees her through seemingly insurmountable hurdles, and she finally marries the Lord.

(source: http://tfmpage.com/forum/23721.20880.03.21.22.html)
I believe the film was a great success, the wonderful songs rendered by Vasantakokilam and Sadagopan acting as bewitching catalysts in drawing the crowds to the movie halls.

Viravanalloor Vedantham Sadagopan was a gifted singing star who glittered for a brief while in the late 30s and early 40s. All the songs were written by Kambadasan. Over the years I managed to collect the following songs from the film, but I guess there would be some more songs in the album. ‘yEzhai chelvan jaadhi bEdham’ (VVS),
‘inbam inbam jagamengum inbam’ (NCV),
‘puNNiya dhinamindRE srikaNNan piRandha puNNiya dhinam’ (NCV),
‘seyal purindhidavENdum’ ( VVS, set in Reethigowlai!),
‘vindhai maandhar seyalE’ (VVS)
are all vintage treasures, soaked deep in the pristine classical heritage of early tfm.

So many tamizh songs! Haven't heard much of any of it growing up! By 80(s) only stories. In that paTTimanRam (link below!) Ghatam Karthik lists all the songs - cinnanciru pEN pOLE, enna kavi pADinAlum, marudamalai etc. All bhakti based! Those were still being heard in blasting street speakers and temple audio!

And he is right. GNB meant only rAdha samEDa - that too only hearsay from Grandmas! Nobody was playing these.

But others?? Here the judge explains what became of such music: https://youtu.be/ZXndbZ60bfQ?t=1781 .

rAgAm is there. But I would have never thought that these had anything to do with Carnatic. Just the background music is a deal breaker! That puts it in a diff genre. In fact some of us hated the background music filled recordings by various Carnatic artistes of the YACM era.

If these songs are Carnatic, then we must declare that music a roaring success! The term golden era of music assumes a different meaning altogether

Even coming to the U.S, I discover a old TNS recording, actually in the flight itself - with CS MurugabhUpathy! His student was travelling for the same assignment. As soon as I land Ramnad Krishnan. Nobody was talking about these oldie tamizh songs anymore. These 78 RPM(s) are some private collectors things.

Only reason I can think of. Carnatic music has SAStra and some science backing it. Even if it is deviating from the same!

It looks like sometimes when you are in the middle rungs of an organization, they say you have to manage upwards as well as downwards. Same way, I guess I have to teach some of these oldsters what real Carnatic music is , while at the same time talking down to the millennials

@RSR , which of your rAgA identification queries have gone unanswered? I will search your history and find out. This compilation of yours is amazing. Please keep it up.

You may link to modern artistes from appropriate commercial YT channels if you wish.

Sometime back I had made a thread of ragas of tiruppAvai and tiruvempAvai in the rAgAs section. That also would be very useful.

Continued from #21 ;) :

Even in the IIT hostel late 80s/early 90s, there was one room that was still playing evari mATTA with kambodhi Alapana of IyenArvAL (Ariyakudi), with PMI or PSP as accompaniment. And I got to discover , as of yet , undiscovered instrument called gOTTUvAdyam.

The probability of finding such things in that hostel was still negligibly positive   . Like finding an electron here at the other end of the cosmos!

But the probablity of anybody playing any of these tamizh movie old timers was zero to zilch! There was rock/pop/Mohmd Rafi/Lata/Kishore Kumar/Jagjit Singh!

Even the tamizhans were not hearing these tamizh songs. They may be hearing one of these above Hindi artistes or what was current then.

SAstram and angvastram ( or what they call as angOstaram in tamizh! :D ) did the tricks I guess.

Why not? Not just him, any tamizh CM composer. Even thirukkuraL has found it's way to CM now.

The difference between this particular thread and the vidwans / vaggeyakaras thread was that the mods only want a song or two per post there because that allows for listening, discussion and a thread to develop and these are the threads that get the maximum views and posts in the long run.

This one however is purely a compilation thread. So let 'em rain...

To Sri.Ajay, SrinathK, shankaranK
=====================
Sri.Ajay-> Thank you very much.
SrinathK-> Thank you for the encouragement.
shankaranK-> Understandable.
I belong to 1945-> 1965 generation and you are from 1965-> generation.
You may notice that , I am consciously choosing only such songs and vocalists prior to 1955
( maharajapuram santhanam is an exception ).. Actually, I am out of touch with all renderings after 1965-> even of my icons like MS and DKP.
----------------------
Actually, art of communication, needs Five instead of Three modes.
1) to a fresher/ general public (2) to junior colleague (3) to co-worker (4) to team leader/ project manager (5) to the CEO.
To a junior colleague, just some technical details with a sprinkling of technical terms.
To the project manager, we avoid explaining technical details but substitute the appropriate jargon, which they can easily follow.
But when the CEO drops in casually in workspot and chats with the worker as to what he is doing, it is best to give what they call 'executive summary!". almost like what we would have told the general public. !
-----
Here we go in a tangent, as is our wont! Pardon.
------
The language used when talking to fresher and CEO may have to be same. ( avoiding jargon and making things short and simple).

===================
1965 was a watershed. All the stars in the CM world were either leaving us or were very much past their prime and creativity.
and Thank you for your permission to keep the posts going forward till the target- 100 ragams are reached. Why not help me?
===========================================================
Some clarifications
1) The main purpose of my posts in this particular thread, is to provide what I feel are the best renditions ( short and sweet) of a song in particular commonly knowmn ragam. ( the target is 100 ragams ). So, it is not from song to ragam but ragam-> song... It is purely meant for absolute beginners. When they meet the name of a ragam, they should think of the corresponding song. mentioned here. If so, the purpose is served.
2) I am not discussing the lyrics at all though I am very particular that the lyrics are from famous and erudite poets and scholars. in chaste and lovely language.
3) The songs should have been written in tamizh language. and should not be from any film
( NCV songs ( a few) , Dandapani Desikar songs from Nandanaar, MS songs from her classic films are exceptions as they are all pre-1950 and are by no means to be dismissed as 'mere film songs.' ). and are of undoubted exceptional quality. ( lyrics by papanasam sivan, kalki, and barathi..and set to great music by people like paapanasam sivan himself, and s.v.venkataraman. )
4) The posts were prompted by SrinathK 's opening guidelines in this thread.
5) I feel no purpose is served if I just mention the ragam, song, and singer. The rasika needs a link ( legal at that) to listen to. . So, it takes time.to search and find.
6) All the rasikas are requested to post a few ragams not covered by me so far.
This is an attempt to bring back the songs of 78 rpm era ( 1935-1955). . I hope that at least a few rasikas , will cherish these songs which are nearly 60-80 years old!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A side note. After Purandaradasa period( say 1500), there was a gap upto 1800. During this period, we had tamil poets/ composers ( arunachalak kavi , mutthu thaandavar, maarimuttha pillai, and contemporaneous with the trinity, Gopalakrishna Barathy). Ooothukkadu kavi lived during the interregnum and gave us many great songs in all genres in Sanskrit and Tamil. During the same period, we had Krishna Leela Tharangini by a t poet NARAYANA THEERTHA. who lived in kaavery delta and created many beauties. Unfortunately, they are not in tamizh.
-----------------------
We can appreciate the need for this thread, if, just think of a ragam name and the corresponding krithi. Unconciously, it will be in either sanskrit or kannada or telugu. Very rarely from tamizh? Correct me if I am wrong.

Well, sufficient history has been established so that, a suruTTI now evokes vangakkaDAl kaDainda or a hamIr kalyANI - tUmaNI mADattu - former not really gItArtamu or bhajana parula and the latter not some other song like mAnamu lEdA or purahara nandana!

My posts are geared towards more general ruminations especially things like SAstras ( with that angOStram  ), antiquity and such and what is their role and importance, since they have come under attack: https://youtu.be/lQdkFRUzoTU?t=876

I am using the thread's intent about songs, especially tamizh songs and how those might fit into an over all scheme!

You can keep going Sir!!

#29 -> item 72 It is SencuruTTi ! Lightened here and there!

Reminded me of a BhArathiAr song of Sanjay @Cleveland 2002,3,4 - after the concert a friend went and inquired the rAgAm. HarikAmbOdhi-light came the reply.

HarikAmbOdhi itself has it's struggles - what is this light?!

I guess rAgAs (tunes) are getting cloud ready and then AI - ready. It will be like how languages got into dictionaries. :P

Sharing the link to a very nice article by Gowry Ramnarayan about Smt.MS and Tamil Isai movement in pre-independence years. Contains some rare information. A PDF.

That was a beautiful rendition the way they try to negotiate the kARvais. Especially the line mAmAn magaLE maNi<<:corrected:>>.. they ( and ARI originally!) must have been thinking of how maNi(<<:Corrected;>>) maNTapa was handled by SubbarAya SAStri.

Later renditions of the YACM era have paused for too long in magaLE and did an uppuma or masiyal with maNik<<:corrected:>> kadavam tAL<<:corrected:>> tiravai. "ham kO man ki Sakti dEnA" to sun kaRnakEliyE!! Stampede of syllables in front of the opening door!

With the ARI rendition ( DKP/DKJ also follow that although it is less prominent!) , the atItam on ezhu | ppIrO and later on navin | DRElO , and the subsequent tumbling of 3s in is like somebody taNNi teliccufying ( sprinkling water to get her up!) and somebody pUmArip pozhinjufying along with nAmam reciting ( showering of flowers) what with PMI taking the cue and highlighting it!

But as always there are questions. To answer the MS article by Gowri on tamizh compositions, and panoramic classicism etc., this perfectly fits a miSra cApu with 4 offset eDuppu just like few other tiruppAvAis. There is some association between 7 and Women - 7 Sisters , sapta kanyAs.

We will pick this one up again in kriyas/angas/lyrical/structure thread!

MS knew of Subramania Bharati’s warning that singing
exclusively in a language that the listener did not understand
would make Carnatic music lose ground in Tamil Nadu. She
often heard Rasikamani T.K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar
insist that sahitya bhava was indispensable to the kriti, and
that neither singer nor listener could experience rasa without
understanding the lyric – “Porul terindu paaduvad
If it is that telugu is suitable for panoramic classicism, then Annamacarya should be center stage, by now!! If it is just about Kannada the "language" as "languages" go nowadays, then PurandaradAsa should be center stage. If it is tamizh the "language" Bharathi and other puratchi kavinjars (revolutionary poets) would be center stage! And Malayalam is nowhere to be seen!

If it is Sanskrit , every Sloka of yore can be dwelt with panoramic classical rendition. dIkshitar's dvitiyAkshara prAsam is a drAviDa (southern origin!) as old Sanskrit works do not conform!

I appreciate their way of expression as opinion leaders on the forefront , but I cannot agree to "without understanding the lyric" caveat. I can agree with "this is my mother tongue" affiliation - but not the "understanding" part. "Understanding " takes us to metaphysical realms!

Meaning and making sense of things as taught in secular modern education cannot be factored into this (Soon with AI, Math is the perfect language with infinite number of axioms!).

It has to be a vidvat sadas or an upanyAsaka with paramparic knowledge who should interpret, then I will consider meaning! For those who are still at it, I will default down to language as letters, starting with vaRNa , mAtra and chandas. There has to be a shared sense of beauty across generations and this is the only formulation that achieves that! It can evolve, but adds, not deletes or purges!

Letters were initially pictorial - and had a shape - hence may have been be connoted with color. vaRNa also means beauty, shape.

mAtRgAvaRNa rUpiNI goes one of the nAmAs.

The singing the praise of tamizh tai - was instituted by the Atheist government with atheists outside the government ridiculing it, as foolishness in instituting a new "God" in the form of language. At the end the atheists in the government agreed, but said they have to bow to the need of respecting the "uNaRvu" feelings of people!

I liked the line by TKC(?) ".. 'Porul terindu paaduvadu bhava sangeetam,
( singing with understanding of meaning, is 'bhaava sangeetham)
matradellam ayyo paavam sangeetam'"-( all else, 'pitiable' sangeetham)
The way in which he says it, though, I do not agree with his opinion.
====================================
Back to my pet assertion ( and your pet aversion)...' lyrics are just a coat hanger for ragam'
and if so, the language of the krithi is immaterial. Nevertheless, when a musician sings a krithi, can he make grammar blunders? Absolutely no.
----------
'mAmAN' ..in current tamil usage, is mAman only. ( wrong?). and is it not ' maNik kathavam '?
maNikkathavam thAL ( or thAzh?). ( not mANikkathavam)....
Even if the krithi is in Tamizh, there is no certainty that the listeners understand the meaning.
That is why, maximum care has to be given in the choice of the song and singer.
If mother-tongue tamil itself suffers so much, how about lyrics in the other languages like Telugu, Kannada and Sanskrit? MalayaLam is just sanskrit!
Yet, when the theme, poetic quality of the song, setting it to sweet tune, orchestration, and glorious singing all merge, as in Smt.MS ( 'vadavaraiyai matthaakki') ragamalika,
( Ilango AdikaL SILAPPATHIKAARAM, Aychiyar kuravai, tuning and orchestration by S.V.Venkataraman, and singing by Smt.MS) (https//sites.google.com/site)+
homage2mssubbulakshmi/home/37-vadavaraiyai-matthaakki ,
I cannot but be thankful for being fortunate to listen to it.

I suppose this is the ARSha prayOga in tamizh - like SIksha( Seeksha) instead of Siksha. But may be a valid word also.

https://agarathi.com/word/%E0%AE%AE%E0% ... 9%E0%AF%8D

I am doing what I am not supposed to do!!

Also if you meant kathavam vs kadavam, the pronunciation is soft da, not ta, tamizh supports this naturally , but did not have a distinct phonetic representation.

Now, are we talking as the country where Eka santa grAhis lived?? A vidvAn who went from Andhra into the court of Shah Jahan, to whom he narrated verbatim a Urdu conversation exactly as heard, without knowing the grammar or the language?

Once SrI praNatARtiharan , the sanskrit professor in American college, Madurai during his discourse on SivAnandalahari in our local temple, was peeved that youngsters prepare for all kinds of entrance exams, but don't study the meaning of mantras. He, for a moment became unaware of the grandeur of his seat as an upanyAsakA and became just another professor, if you know what I mean!

Language of the kriti irrelevant?? The unified metaphysics underlying all Indian languages is still relevant! In that realm we should not be seeing them as different languages!

Don't you belong to a generation who mugged multiplication tables by rote, some times musically? ;)

The tuning of tUmaNi mADattu, it should be noted, utilizes svarAkshara in all its beginning lines where there are two mA syllables - more aptly gamakAksharas , as it is ma(m1)-ga-pa-ma(m2).

( a generation, 'which' rather than /who')
Yes.Sir. Wherever possible.
That was 'oral tradition'... The Vedic tradition puts reciting with correct cadence, before trying to 'understand' .( memorize first-- later-gradually-understanding will come in flashes). 'absorb the music.. sing it in your mind again and again... let it sink deep in your memory cells.. later we can substitute appropriate words in a language of our choice,, was our motto ). Papanaasam sivan's 'enna seyven' song in sriranjani ragam is said to be exactly set to the tune of thyagaraji krithi '
To quote
In Tamil film music, one of the earliest instances of Sriranjani on the silver screen was in the film Seva Sadhanam. M.S. Subbulakshmi sang ‘Enna Seiven’ in the exact tune of ‘Marubalka’ kriti! In those days, that was a way of attracting the public’s attention to a film song — tuning it in the exact melody of an already popular song.
What strikes one is that, back then Thyagaraja kritis were as popular as other film songs... times change, don’t they?
( color- by me)
Sivanandha Lahari is so musical even without any tune. Would have been more enchanting and mind-bogging sanskrit, if some 'tune smith' had set it to music. ...
( transliteration does not bring out the loveliness of the lines. Better to read it in original)
relevant here is
Smruthou shasthre vaidhye shakuna kavitha gana phanithou
Puranee manthre vaa sthuthi natana hasyeshwa chatura
Kadham ragman preethirbhavathi mayi koo aham pasu pathe
Pasum maam sarvagna pradhitha kripaya palaya vibho

Actually they would have been still popular. Film music then had access only to the same group that was listening to tyAgarAja kritis ! May be a bit beyond and not much.

That group dwindled due to upward mobility and family planning - is my theory! What say you?

Sir, I beg to differ. Actually, the orthodox community did not understand the significance of the stage and film media in the decades of 1920-1940. and were actually very hostile.
( Even in the Trinity days, Gopala krishna Barathy chose the Tamil medium) During that time, the stage artistes like S.G.Kittappa + K.B.SundaraambaL captivated the general public with stunning classical music in plays. and in the film world, maximum importance was given to music, there also of great quality. Might have heard about GNB's early films, Musiri Subramanya Iyer, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer , KaLakkad Ramanarayana Iyer, and of course,,V.V.Sdagopan M.M.DandapanNi desikar. We cannot leave out M,KT either. . Music directors like Thuraiyoor Rahjagopala Srma , Papanasam Sivan, Sudharsanam, &, G.Ramanathan contributed greatly too.
I remember , in my school days, names and tunes of ragams were very well known to the common people all over tiny villages of tamil country, mainly due to the plays and films and not at all through the orthodox galaxy. Dont you know, films like Haridas full of songs in classical tunes were all block-busters? What was the social composition of the audience? Definitely not the orthodox only.
The times have changed, brought about by advances in technology. and value system . We can only pray that film and TV producers shunned glamour and vulgarity and opted for good themes. ( unfortunately, 'it seems 'it is the dog that died!')
I submit, that musicians thorough with the classics of Purandharadasa, ,pre-trinity and the Trinity, adopt the same method as done by P.Sivan( create tamil songs in the same tune as the creators of CM and get it sung with artistes of highest caliber of voice culture and discipline). Rather a difficult task.-The theme assumes great importance.

But the social composition of Carnatic listeners in many kalyANams - not just brahmin households, village temples, etc. were not , by any indication seems to have been orthodox ( or is it orthoprax) only.

The sanskrit pundits ,may sometimes ignore all things musical, they considered themselves beyond all that actually. The temple priests on the other hand knew of its significance , used it in Archana.

Also this Orthodox/Orthoprax etc., are not quite what they are defined to be!

You cannot talk about colonial, post colonial institutions of music in Madras only!

There were Orthodox ( using the term loosely to mean old fashioned or people with rigid ideas!) reviewers in Chennai , so much so that, a Sruti magazine 2009 or 2010 write up ( may be a letter to the editor!) mentions that GNB's concert outside Chennai were all much better than what he sang in there , due to the review menace!
