dhavaLANga - Dikshitar

Post by SrinathK »

And here's the asampUrNa mEla raga #49.

One thing stands out in the SSP, is that whether sampUrNa or asampUrNa school, most of the prati madhyama rAgAs are indeed more recent and less explored than the shuddha madhyama rAgAs, with most of them looking like they just opened their account at the Dikshitar school.

This one is in fact surprisingly linear considering the asampUrNa school's fondness for non-linearity.

Aro : S R1 G3 M2 P D1 S - note that N1 does not appear in the arOhaNa
Avaro : S N1 D1 P M2 G3 R1 S

SDS is also possible. A sprinkling of SPS phrases are used to add non-linearity.

There is only one Muthuswami Dikshitar kriti in this rAgA, shrNgArAdi navarasANgi - of which this was all I could get :

Dikshitar has done an admirable job keeping this rAgA's bhAvA distinct from gamakakriyA or kAshirAmakriyA (i.e. it doesn't sound pUrvikalyAni-sh or pantuvarALi-sh for those who are used to the modern forms of these ragas)
