Vivek Moozhikulam is an upcoming vidwan hailing from Moozhikulam near Ernakulam and is disciple of Vidwan C.R. Vaidyanathan, a senior disciple of P.S. Narayanaswamy. I heard him last season in one after noon concert in BVB Mini Hall and got much impressed with his sruti sudham, voice that has got strength and enviable range, pronounciation, manodharmam, stage presence and concert planning. There are a few concerts in the yt and they provide good listening to the serious Sangeeta rasikas. We can see influence of Abhishek Raghuram in his music. Thank God, he is restricting brighas to the desirable limit. His concert was organised by Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha.

The start with Viriboni was an indication for the well planned concert that was to follow. In the concert that lasted for two hours and fifteen minutes, Vivek presented three raga alapanas of varying length- Devagadhari, Lathangi and Kharaharapriya. The alapanas conformed to the characteristic sangatis, bringing out the raga bhavam quite eloquently. The long akara phrases, kampita gamakams, jarus, breathtaking brighas all were used to paint beautiful edifice of the ragas chosen.

The kritis were chosen from the wide spectrum of Carnatic composers in various talams and various moods and were rendered in the appropriate kalapramanam conforming to the authentic patantharam with the multitude of sangatis diligently rendered. The kriti Ksheerasaga sayana brought memoirs of Chembai and K.J Yesudas rendering the same in their inimitable manner with the cascading sangatis at Tarakanama tyagarajanuta. The main kriti Pakalanilabadi was taken from the anupallavi, but later he sang all the sangatis of the pallavi- there by not missing any details. That was appreciable. Many people do not attempt that. For the main song neraval was done at the lines Thanuvooche vandana with the volley of kalpana swaras adding sheen to it. Kalpana swarams had good amount of kanakku in them. For the song Venkataramana, kalpana swarams were attempted at Ramana- with atheetha eduppu. Very skilful in that. Never heard from any body.

Gurus C.R.Vaidyanathan and V.L.Kumar were sitting in the front row beaming with pride as the young vidwans were exhibiting their talents and dedication. It was a very kind gesture on their part.

Pakkavadyams- They were great strength to the concert. Tirucherai Karthik on the Violin, disciple of V.L. Kumar and S.Varadarajan, followed the kritis in an unobtrusive manner. The raga alapanas followed the lines of the vocalist but took care to infuse his imagination diligently. His replies to the vyavahara laden swaras were appreciable. Sridyuth Pillai on the Mridangam provided good support on the Mridangam. But he was upset with the acoustics which he informed the organisers at the end in the mike, which could have been done in private. Excellent concert for two hours fifteen minutes.

Thanks CRama for the review. I happened to listen to the initial part of the concert up until Lathangi and was very impressed with both the voice(range and timbre) and the vidwat of this young vidwan. Was very impressed with his leisurely rendition of Devagandhari.

Definitely a great talent to watch out for. I plan to finish listening to the full concert.

You have indicated RS for Janaranjani but did not include it in your alapana list. Was an alapana done?

Oho. Now only I understand your confusion. By RS, I meant Ramaswami Sivan- composer. But now I understand it was Mahavaidyanatha Sivan- his brother. Sorry. Now corrected.

CRama,

This link is only for around 1 hour and 30 minutes. It does not include the main item Pakkala Nilabadi. Is there another link for the rest of the concert?

Thank you for sharing and introducing us to this young vidvAn. Even a truncated concert was great to hear.

He is certainly someone to watch for. I also enjoyed the differentiation of the alpa- and mahAprANas he was able to maintain through all the sangatis he sang.

The dEvagAndhAri piece reminded me of the same kRti from a very young Sri Sankaran Namboodri eons ago!

Only crib was in the MD kRti when he sang the pallavi as svAminAtha paripAlayAMSu mAm (instead of paripAlayASu mAm) which changes the meaning rather drastically - ASu = quickly, aMSu = a minute particle.... :D

It may very well be a technical issue. Was looking forward to listening to the rest of the concert. Will now look for other renditions of this young vidwan!

The SVBC concert of Vivek was fine.
He began with Rangapuravihara preceded by a sloka from Ranganatha ashtakam. After Pankajalochana (Kalyani-Swathi tirunal) he took up Nagumomu as the main. V V Srinivasa Rao and N S Kalyanaraman were the accompanists.

He also sang Lakshnamula in Sudhasaveri, a TRS favourite with interesting kalpana swarams and concluded with Jo achutananda in Kapi- popularised by MS. A very nice concert indeed.
