SARVAM KRISHNA MAYAM- VIJAYALAKSHMI SUBRAMANIAM-RAGHAVAN MANIAN

Post by CRama »

As a part of the Gokulashtami celebrations, the above programme was held in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on 21 August 19 at 6.15 P.M. The accompanists were M.R.Gopinath on the Violin, Ramkumar on the Mridangam and a young vidwan on the Keyboard (name I could not note). Raghavan Manian is a disciple of Dr. Balamuralikrishna who is equally proficient in Vocal and Flute. I have heard his concerts in yt and quite impressive music, many times reminding of his Guru BMK. His flute on many occasions embellished the presentation. It was a thematic concert that had compositions by various composers representing the various stages of growth of Lord Krishna- from a small baby to the Almighty Geetopadesaka.

List of songs.
• Aanirai meykka nee- Periyazhvar pasuram- Nattai
• Indiranodu Brahmanum- Periyazhvar pasuram- Poorvikalyani
In the above pasurams, Periazhwar celebrated the baby Krishna by dressing him –Thalaivari poochoodi- drishti kazhithu.
• Ganamurthey- Ganamurthy – T (S)
• Paal vadiyum mukham- -Natakurinji-Uthucaud.
Here the poet described the child hood of the Lord.
• Teerada vilayattu pillai- Ragamalika- Bharatiyar
Bharatiyar had composed many songs on the various facets of Krishna. This song describes the childhood pranks of the Lord set to the evergreen mettu.
• Thillana – including verses from Narayaneeyam describing the Kaliya mardanam. The thillana in the ragam Hamsavinodini was composed by Raghavan Manian.
As Krishna has grown up his Rasaleela has been taken from Ashtapadi of Jayadeva. Two Ashtapadis have been selected.
• Rajanijanitha- Arabhi.
• Vadasiyathi- Mukhari.
Here it was presented in a dramatic manner. In the first Ashtapadi, Radha gets angry with Krishna a he has come not in a pleasing manner. In the second Ashtapadi Krishna cajoles Radha. stanzas were sung alternatively by both the vocalists. A very interesting presentation,
• Karpooram Naarumo- Nachiar Tirumozhi- Khamas
• RTP- Abhogi- Valaji- Adi talam- Damaruga yati.
Pallavi sahithyam- Jayam Vijayam Sree Jayanthi Vaibhavam bhavam vam
Raga Abhogi was sung by Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam. Valaji was sung by Raghavan Manian by Sruti bhedam.
• Bangaru Murali- Neelambari- BMK.
• Kandaletra kashtam- Kuchelavrittam Vanchipaattu (Boat song) of Ramapurathu Wariar in Malayalam in a catchy folk tune. Here the poet describes the friendship between Krishna and Kuchela.
• Tanu ninnadu- Kedaragowla- Kanakadasar
• Karuna suno- Meera bhajan- Bagesree
• Sree Venugopala- Kurinji- MD
• Kalaye yasode- Suruti- NT
• Slokam from Bhagavadgeeta.
Three slokas which are the prayers contained in the Bhagavat geeta.

It was a thoughtfully curated programme drawing compositions from a wide gamut of composers bringing in many rare compositions. There was manodharmam elements also for those who are keen on it. The large audience sat immersed in the purity of music, melody and devotion in the presentation that lasted for two and half hours.. When a male singer and female singer collaborate, it is challenge to match the srutis. The singers, in the present case, managed quite intelligently. It is all the more difficult for the accompanists to play for the varying srutis. They also did a commendable job.

Nice review.
Quite a unique presentation of songs on Krishna drawn from different sources.

Was the programme videographed? (Then chances are there it might appear in YT.)

vadasi yadi (वदसि यदि) kincidapi danta ruci kaumudi is a unique ashTapadi in the sense that it is one where kRshNa is the lovelorn nAyaka pleading with rAdhA (he refers to her as priyE cAruSIlE). It is also the only ashTapadi where the poet refers to himself as the husband of Padmavati (jayatu padmAvati rAmaNa jayadEva kavi) as a tribute to her greatness and good fortune (the story of how that came about in very beautiful). It also has the most poetic description of a kiss - mukha kamala madhupAnam! :)
The mukhAri version is the one sung by Smt. MSS, right?
