Dineshkumar & Manikandan : Nagaswaram - 18 Oct

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

Parivadini & Nada Inbam,
Ragasudha Hall, Mylapore, Chennai
18.10.19
4 - 5.30 pm

Nagaswaram
M Dineshkumar and M Manikandan
Tavil: T S Gopinath and S Kamaraj

The above recital by the young team was part of Parivadini's scheme for promoting Nagaswara melam especially among upcoming artists which has been received very well in music circles. (This preceded the main concert the same evening by the popular duo S Kasim and S Babu for which CRama has given a separate review).

Kritis played:
1 Mooladhara Murthy Ganapathi- Hamsadhwani- Papanasam Sivan
2 Mahaganapatey Palaya - Natanarayani - Dikshitar
3. Engu naan selvenaiyya- Dwijavanthi - Periyasami Thooran - Khandachapu
4 Ethavunara - Kalyani - Tyagaraja
5.Yemanipogatuthura - Veeravasantam - Tyagaraja
6. Asaindhaadum mayil -SimhendraMadhyamam-Oothukadu (followed by Tani)
7. Visveswara Darishan - Sindhubhairavi- Swati Tirunal

The recital was good and the team work was quite evident in the overall presentation especially in the error-free laya segment. Mooladharamoorthy was the right choice for the beginning with swaraprastaras. The second kriti-again on Lord Vighneswara- was perhaps selected for the rarity of the raga and the chittaswaras(This was a Madurai Somu favourite). The Tamil kriti in Dwijavanti and Khandachapu is not common in concert circuits and I was hearing it for the first time. Dineshkumar rendered a clean alapana for this. Vocalists may find this composition a good choice in concerts.

Ethavunara -the sub main, was presented after a brief alapana but seemed to lack sahitya clarity espy in the anupallavi passage 'Seethagouri'. Swaraprastaras were avoided possibly to gain time for the main 'Asaindhadum mayilonru' in Simhendramadhyamam. The raga was delineated well with adequate karvai. The team fared imaginatively in swaraprastaras but the bhriga phrases needed fine tuning. The Tani by Gopinath and Kamaraj was well planned and executed.

M Manikandan (Nagaswaram support) maintained a subdued role throughout.

The concert concluded aptly with a Sindhubhairavi (Visweswara).
