Nisha Rajagopal sang a brilliant Pallavi. She did not get a prize. Sumithra sang the worst Pallavi. She got the prize. Sumithra has the support of the “grand old lady”. So much for merit in the academy of intellectuals.

It will be great if CM and the MA is still going strong 900 years from now in 2919 and if we can find some trikala jnani who can see into the future that far down the road.

Any system of awards or prizes where there is no transparency is bound to have some questionable results.

Re: Music academy awards
I don't think there is any great secret. It is something like one person from the expert committee attends every concert. It is supposed to exclude artist bias. I wonder how two people who attended one each of two concerts can get together and rank them!
No idea. But like any other organisation, what the MA does is what it does. The setting up of itself, by itself, then empowered by the public, as the premier Sabha means it is also going to get the most flac.
Nobody is forced to accept it's supremacy, agree with its awards, or attend its concerts. Or sit in its canteen. One could easily have an Academy-free season. But most of us wouldn't want to.

Re: Music academy awards
from what i have heard, my understanding is that, the system of prizes operate in the following way.
Senior vidwans are appointed as judges slotwise, by the expert committee. 9 am concerts would have the same judge(s), so would 11:45 am concerts and so on. Judge(s) will listen to all the concerts and provide ratings. The criteria, i think includes aspects such as 'providing a list', 'adhering to the set list of items' etc., over and above the musical parameters. After the scores are received for all the concerts, based on the set criteria, person with higher scores get the prize.

At least, the morning sessions are out on YouTube for all of us to see. I have seen most of the sessions. I do think the two presentations that won are deserving choices. They were rich in content and managed to stick to deliver within the stipulated time.

Re: Music academy awards
Chief Guest Sri Suresh Krishna spoke about the importance of bringing tamizh compositions out, being the son of well known composer Smt. Ambujam Krishna.
Dr Rita Rajan referred to the 50-50 club - something I have heard about, directly from a member of it. It was organized by Sri S.Y Krishnaswamy Iyer. 50% music and 50% food and socialization is what I remember. It seems, Sri Krishnaswamy Iyer would come and checkout the knowledge of those who joined new discreetly in conversations during the other 50.
Quite an exclusive club

Vishnudev Namboodari in Junior category?? Really? I think he is both elder and also much more talented/knowledgeable to be in that category.
