Govindan..great translation.

Some comments: cidambaram is one of the pancabhUta sthalams of SI, where SivA is worshipped as one of the five elements (who remembers the movie 'Salangai oli' where Kamalahasan as a dance critic rips S. P Sailaja's character for interpretting bhUtam as a ghost, rather than the elements?:lol:):
cidambaram - AkASa lingam - the element is space - and that is the cidambara rahasyam - open space
kALahasti - vAyu lingam - the element is wind/air
tiruAnaikAval - appu lingam - element is water
tiruaNNAmalai - agni lingam - element is fire
kAncIpuram - bhUmi lingam - element is earth

MBK/Others: when you request translations, if you indicate if you want the meaning to choreograph in bharatanATyam style, or kuchipuDi style, or if you just want the general import, it would help the translator.

It is nice that you elaborated on the Chidambara Rahasya.
However, it is doubtful whether the temple staff - may be even the dIkshitars - know this or not; they show only bilva leaves and do not explain anything; and there is a special entrace fee for the darshan of the Chidambara Rahasya.
Such extortionist activities have only brought bad name to Hinduism and Temples.
Sorry for digression.

That is indeed sad, Govindan...Many years ago, I remember going to the temple with senior administrative staff from Annamalai University (courtesy my dad), and had the most informative and wonderful darSan there, including the rahasyam...

I was a willing victim a few years ago at cidambaram. We paid the extra fee (including the extortion by the dikshitar that he will perform puja every month for a hefty annual fee and send "prasadam"--despite my objections that he can't send them to the US--to my designated relatives in Chennai) to see the open space wherein the golden vilva leaves were hanging. The rahasyam was mentioned in soft tones! The visit lasted a couple of minutes but one is awed by the rahasyam rather than by the actual sight itself.

Hanging in midair? Yes, but only the bottom part. The top was in the Heavens! (just kidding).

Seriously, the top portion of the ceiling was open to the skies. However, the golden vilva leaves were probably attached to the closed portions of the ceiling. You only get to see them some 3-4 feet from outside the portal. We are not allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum. So, there you go for the "rahasyam".

There is no way I could tell where the leaves were suspended - I knew for a fact that it had to be 'man-made', but I was also given a very lucid explanation of the rahasyam before I went inside the temple, so I knew that they were NOT the secret.
