Hi,

I just came back from TMK's concert at Bangalore for Sree Ramakrishna bajan trust at Odukathur Mutt. This concert
is last in the series of mahasivarathri concert. Looks like the way the sabhas are getting funded in bangalore, there is no need to go to chennai during music season. Most popular artists seem to visit Bnagalore very often. The crowd was overflowing in the main hall and there was a very good LCD projection outside and many people were there.

What a Sankar Abaranam (sadashiva..) package? The alapana, niraval and swara prastharams everything was great and elaborated well. Wondering how he does it so well in every dept? In swara prasthara, he sang long swaras twice , first one is after a few slow swara renditions and the second being the climax swara after the fast swara renditions. I have not seen this style with others. Someone can carify these technicals? Is it speciality of SSI school.

Someone in the organising commitee called him "Then (honey) Madhura krishna" after the sankarabarnam. The thani by mannagudi Eshwaran and Purushotam was another highlight of the concert. Actually HKvenkatram's sankarabarana and mukari alapana in violin was also pretty neat.

The concert started a bit late (20 min) with maya malava goula piece. (I observed he removed his watch after the first song). Then the submain alapana was Begada 'vaa muruga'. Then Kalavathi (kalavathi saraswathi) and his usual Thenuga (teliyalethu rama). Then came the 1 hour main song in sankarabaranam excluding thani.

A short interruption by the organiser came next. I think somehow the organisers need to understand that the artists want to deliver as much as possible to the audience , especially when they come out to places like bangalore. They definitely are not looking for our appreciation not to the extent of 10-15 min. I remember, last time Sanjay told them that "make it short as he doesnot have time for RTP". There was a dillema whether to deliver the RTP or not. I think TMK checked with the accompnist as it was getting late. The crowd in the main hall was waiting and very few left. This probably made krishna in favour of an RTP.

A short version of Mukarai RTP, Pallavi - oru tharam sivachidambaram sonnal was the next item. My sister who came to pick me up told me that it was too good. Actually I was spellbound by the sankarabaranam and thani that I took time to recover from the heavy dose of it. The ragamaligai swarams are in lathangi(correct me if I am wrong), abogi, sindhubairavi(elaborated longer). The essence of mukari was brought in. Somehow I feel, any pallavi related to chidambram natarajar goes well with Mukari.

The audience were great. Ultimate silence during the main song also shows the increasing number of serious rasigas. Especially the sponcer was sitting in the first seat at the concert from the begining with great interest. The organisers told that his concert was asked by many sponcers. I think next year they can bid TMKs concert.

Someone who is more technical can give more elaboration on the post RTP items and thalam related technicalities. I left after the RTP as I have to travel a bit long to reach home. I donot know the composres name for song.

Ah...TMK...Shankarabharanam...Sadasivam Upasmahe....

Shankarabharanam is the SSI's school's legacy and Sadasivam Upasmahe is perhaps one of the most rivetting krithis out there.....Must have been grand!

Sri T M Krishna- Vocal
Sri HK Venkatram- Violin
Sri Mannargudi Easwaran- Mridangam
Sri B S Purushotam- Kanjira
Sri G Ravikiran- Tambura

List of Songs

mAyAtheetha swarUpini- mayamalavagowlai- Ponniah Pillai-Swarams
VAa murugA vAa- Begada- Spencer Venugopal- RAga sketch
KalAvati kamalAsana yuvathi- Dikshitar- Alapana
teliyaleru rAma- DhenukA- Thyagarja
sadAshivam upAsmahE- Shankarabharanam- Dikshitar- A, N ,S, T
..........

With such a star studded ensemble, do I need to say that the concert was top class from the word go?

Anticipating a rush for seats, I arrived early enough to hear the last half hour of the preeceding concert by one Smt Suhaasini Arunachalam.- student of Smt Neela Rajagopal. A very neat presentation of Mohana followed by Kapaali caught the attention of most rasikas who were sauntering in for the TMK concert which was to follow.

And what a cracker of a concert it was. BEgining with mAyatheetha swarUpini, TMK must have felt his voice was in great shape as he briskly launched into a tirade of swrams touching the tara sthayi panchama.

A short sketch of begada followed with Spancer Venugopal's kriti- Vaa Muruga Vaa
was the next.

TMK then started on what seemed a unfamiliar raga and probably seeing a few confused faces announced the raga as kalavati. But surely this- with its shatshruti rishabham - was no where close to the kalavati I was used to hearing.

A little google search back home helped me unearth more facts about this raga. KAlavati was the name given to the 31st mela- yAgapriyA- in the asampoorna mela scheme while the other more familiar kalavati is a janya of chakravakham.

Anyways, The slow paced chauka kala kriti of Dikshitar was a treat to listen. IMO any dikshitar kriti rendered slow speed by TMK is a treat.

ANd then followed a grand majestic Shankharabharanam. I cannot simply describe the beauty of the alapna, dripping as it was with naadamritam. Building it step by step, swara by swara, TMK ended his ascent with a 5 minute soujourn at the tara sthayi gandhara. One could see him putting his heart and soul into the ragam squeezing every bit of gamakam possible.

It was indeed a high bar set for the violinist, but HK Venkataram replied adroitly and also shone in his individual essays.

Neraval was at Purana purusham but no tisram.

I left soon after the tani, and now i realize that I missed a Mukahri RTP. sigh!

Another awesome concert by TMK.

i guess you meant that the neraval for the main piece was without melkaalam - which was the case at yesterday's concert.

Ravikiran,

Yes, that it what I meant. Just that I am not sure about the technical terms used. Probably I should have worded differently. Sorry for exposing my ignorance!!!

the post-rtp song was the javali "janaro" of poochi srinivasa iyengar.
the tillana was in purnachandrika - again one of poochi's compositions.
