Thiruvarur Tyageshan consort(s)

Post by HarishankarK »

Who are Kamalamba, Nilotpalamba and Kathyayini devis? Are they avatarams of Kamalamba itself or three different deities??
Is the shrine of Kamalamba separate to that of Tyagaraja Swami or in the same temple??

@HarishankarK

Chanced to see this only now....Neelothpalaamba is the only consort of Thiruvaaroor Thyaagesa... Kamalaamba has a separate shrine in the same temple complex and though she is Devi, she is not Parvathi alone but Supreme Mother, a combination of Parvathi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. This is evident from the exact words in the kruthis epecially, the sixth onwards. Sri MD never considered Kamalamba as the consort of Siva according to Prof. PPN.

the latest posts on Thiruvaaroor kruthis by SriMD in the composers section- Muthuswami Dikshitar may be of interest.

I m just seeing this post.

The main Shiva of Thiruvarur temple is Valmika nathar. His consort is neelotpalamba.

Thyagaraja swami is more like the somaskandar of the temple and the ambal who is along with thyagaraja swami is kathyayani amba.

kamalamba is separate, as mentioned in one of the above posts.

Since the Dikshitar kritis are mentioned in this thread, the following is relevant.

1. The word "kAtyAyani" is used as a descriptor for MANY dEvis across the kSEtras by the Dikshitar including for example
madhurAmbA in the Sri madhurAmbikE kalyAni
kAmAkSi in kAmAkSi kAmakOTi sumadyuti
kamalAmbA in the kamalAmbAm kalyAni
mahiSAsura mardini - nArAyani
lalitAmbikAm cintayAmyaham - dEvakriyA

The appearance of "kAtyAyani" in 2 of the tiruvArUr tyAgarAja kritis (the bEgada and the rudrapriya) is for the same reason, as a generic descriptor.

The word as it refers to all these kritis, itself derives from the dEvi WHO FOLLOWS the kA-akSara mantra (which is seen also in the kamalAmbA Ahiri kriti with the line " kAdi-hAdi-sAdi mantra rupinyA".

kAtyAyani = ka + Adi (=Ati = etc.) and Ayani = following/belonging

2. The Dikshitars pujA of the Siva at tiruvArUr is organized as a navAvarana specifically with the word/name tyAgarAja. The word "valmika" only appears sparingly in this set of 9 kritis.

Of course the "valmikalinga" is part of the completely distinct tiruvArUr panCA linga set.

The formal consort of the tiruvArUr tyAgarAja is the nilOtpalAmbA, in the Dikshitars pujA.

3. the tiruvArUr tyAgarAja complete navAvarana is described in post # 572 of the Mutthuswamy Dikshitar thread, where the 9 Cakra mudras are identified AND each rAga choice is explained.

The vibhakti of 8, based on grammar declension of the tyAgarAja word is MERELY A SUBSET of the complete 9.

4. Avarana (the staged progression) is far deeper than mere grammar (vibhakti), in the Sir Cakra pujA.

5. Similarly there is a complete navAvarana (ALL NINE kritis) for the nilOtpalAmbA, based on gaulA-antya rAgas , who is the formal consort.

6. The kamalAmbA navAvarana is the only set where Avarana sequence coincides with vibhakti/grammar sequence.

In the kamalAmbA set vibhakti sequence 1 to 8 coincides with Avarana sequence.

The last or 9th Avarana kriti (Sri kamalAmbA jayati - the Ahiri) for the sarva-Anandamaya Cakra has multiple vibhaktis.
Posts 564/565 of the Mutthuswamy Dikshitar delineate the Cakra mudras and the basis for the rAga choices for this set.
For example, Ahiri derives from the Ahara = offering represented by the final stage of this pujA.

7. There are other navAvaranas to several other deities as shown in posts # 567, 568, 571 , 573 etc etc of the Mutthuswamy Dikshitar thread.

8. The Dikshitars rAga choices are themselves governed by (and therefore explained by) the specific Cakra word name/meaning.
