It sounds irreverent that a semi-literate in Carnatic music should dare to write on MS Subbulakshmi, ‘MS Amma’ to millions of her admirers. I still venture to write for a selfish reason. Recalling her divine qualities gives me some inner strength, that is utterly difficult to draw from elsewhere. It is akin to visiting a favourite temple to pay obeisance to the Lord and committing oneself to good conduct! Such is MS’s magnetism in life and after.

MS’s appeal was not merely to the connoisseur among the TamBrahms as some would like to believe. Unlettered Tamil non-Brahmin villagers were equally ecstatic that she was one among them. In a sense she bridged the chasm between the elite of Chennai’s Music Academy and the peasant who was enchanted by her soulful rendering of songs in praise of Lord Muruga or Vinayaga.
She was aristocratic, having shed her humble beginnings in the district town of Madurai after her marriage to a Madras-based nationalist, Sadasivam, known for his uncanny ability to spot talent. (It was he who inducted her into the Tamil movie world as well as the privileged Carnatic music platform). She adapted herself quickly to become part of the music milieu dominated by Brahmins, something my dear friend T M Krishna considers an aberration to be remedied sooner than later. MS never forgot her rural roots, although she did not flaunt her love for that part of Tamil Nadu.

Indomitable Spirit
Unlike in the West, classical music in India is strongly intertwined with religion. This is especially true of Carnatic music, which drew from Saint Thiagaraja, Purandaradasa, Swati Tirunal, Papanasam Sivam, Periyaswami Thooran and a few others, who composed in four different languages constructing the bhakti cult that has remained the sinew of music south of the Vindhyas.
It was MS, along with T Brinda and T Muktha, D K Pattammal, N C Vasanthakokilam and M L Vasanthakumari, who all built a formidable arsenal that put the male chauvinists in their place. She strode like a colossus for more than four decades and inspired a new generation of talented singers who are now the leading lights.

I still remember sitting on the sidelines of the stage in the hallowed and overflowing Music Academy in the early 1970s along with my father, after buying a ten rupee ticket. I had the privilege of attending her very last concert at the Academy sponsored by Swaralaya, a Kerala-based cultural organisation. In between I must have heard her on stage scores of times. This was in addition to her recordings and radio broadcasts that I enjoyed listening to. No concert was unimportant for her, where she should exert a little less because of a fading voice or poor health. Age did not wither her. This spirit was attributable to a total and unparalleled surrender to the Lord.

The Nightingale of India
She also derived great strength from her life partner Sadasivam, a devoted but an extremely stern husband. The rigid discipline that he imposed on her was often the subject of whispers and disapproval in close circles. This was a distraction without which the MS story can still be told with only minimum loss of authenticity. Sadasivam’s protective arm gave the gentle and gracious MS the support she needed while she was under public glare. Those of us who had access, direct or indirect, to the household, knew that MS did not mind this cover.

Success had only a ripple effect on her. That the Mahatma chose her only to sing ‘Vaishnava Janate’ on many occasions and not anyone else may have pleased her, but it did not give her any exalted feeling that she was different from the rest of the pack. Panditji called her the ‘Nightingale of India’ and this title certainly stuck to her, adding lustre to her personality. But it never swayed her from the singular purpose of pleasing the Lord. Who can forget her role as Meera in the movie of that name, and the new meaning that Meera Bhajan (‘Mei Hari charana ki dasi’) acquired through her golden voice?

Musical Genius
The fact that she did not learn Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali or Telugu formally did not make any difference. The felicity with which she sang in a multitude of languages brought her an acceptance that was the envy of lesser musicians. Her ‘Dhano Dhanne Pushpo Bhora…amader ei Bashundhara’ and her ‘Maithreem Bhajata’ (composed by the Paramacharya of Kanchi), apart from bringing tears to millions of eyes, stood out for their enunciation that would shame native speakers of the two languages.
She even sang a verse in English (set to tune by the famous Handel Manual of Madras) at the highly rated concert at the United Nations headquarters in New York, which is still spoken of by her ecstatic admirers, who also refer to her lilting performance at the Carnegie Hall in the same city.

The MS couple’s association with Rajaji (C Rajagopalachari) was legendary. The bond was generated by Sadasivam’s strong links with the Congress. When Rajaji composed his eternal piece ‘Kurai onrumillai’ (I have no grievance) dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his incarnation Lord Krishna, it was popularised among others by MS. MS’ flawless rendering of Sri Venkatesa Suprabadham (the awakening of the Lord in the morning) is a landmark in the history of devotional music. A number of others have recited these shlokas in Sanskrit. Possibly, no one measured up to her level in capturing the essence of the verses. Her decision to render this in Tamil as well showed her eclectic disposition.

Personal Bond
The MS couple gave their all to society. The enormous money earned by them from concerts and royalty from recordings was not for their keep. It was for those in need. I have seen Sadasivam hand over the purse received from the organiser of a concert to the beneficiary at the venue itself. This munificence was with MS’ wholehearted consent. The couple led a simple life and acts of generosity did not affect their already modest style of living.
My association with MS goes back to the 1960s. This was thanks mainly to my mother-in-law Chellammal who enjoyed a special relationship with the former. Only few could break the informal cordon imposed by Sadasivam. Chellammal was one of them. MS and Chellammal met on many occasions. But their main exchanges were only over the phone.
The bond between the traditional ‘madisar’ Iyengar mami that my mother-in-law was and the bewitchingly charming MS Amma to this day baffles me and my wife Shanti. For years after MS’ passing away until she herself left for her heavenly abode last year, Chellammal believed that MS was still around calling her every other day. Possibly this lends credence to the widely held belief that MS Amma was immortal.

It was inspired by Juthika Roy's tune , a favourite of Kalki and he specifically recommended the person who tuned this song to adopt that tune( the music composer was S..V.Venkataraman).
It is slightly mixed ( misra) version of HM Jonpuri with a tint of HM Bairavi ( not Sindhubairavi)

A wonderful upload for quite a few reasons.
This is from 1961 AIR program ..( Smt.MS was 45 then) .Secondly all the songs are on Lord Ramachandra. Her rendition of poems from Kamba RamaayaNam are not commonly available in the web. And a few slokams from Vakmiki set to music.

Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi was born on 16-9-1916. NaadhaBrunga is uploading a series of her concerts in Music Academy ( Titled MS105) and these have been placed in General Discussion section- Music Academy concerts). The latest-part-7 has been done today and as a bonus, has a brief introduction by Sriram.V.

In 1933, a mother and daughter duo migrated from Madurai to Madras seeking concert opportunities. It was just over a year since the 16 year-old girl had made a powerful impression at a concert during the Mahamakham festival at Kumbhakonam. In the capital city of Madras Presidency, they had called on the important personages in the field of music and the girl’s singing was praised, even by the hard-to-please Veena Dhanam.

On the 28th of December 1933, she gave her first public concert in Madras city, accompanied by her mother on the veena and T Gururajappa on the violin. No mridangam artiste is mentioned in the advertisements released for the occasion. The concert was at the Saundarya Mahal in George Town and was organised by the Indian Fine Arts Society, one of the two rival organisations then involved in the December Music Season. The other institution, the Music Academy, did not feature her that year.

The IFAS’ concert of December 1933 was very favourably received and from then on there was no looking back. MS Subbulakshmi became a fixture on the Madras concert circuit. But the Music Academy, by then the premier Sabha, still did not feature her. In 1934 she was invited to attend the Music Academy’s annual conference but was not asked to sing. She dutifully attended the theory sessions and the deliberations in the company of other women such as her mother, the Harikatha exponent C Saraswathi Bai, the singer Madras Lalithangi and the latter’s six-year-old daughter, the future star, ML Vasanthakumari. In 1935, MS was given a concert slot at the Academy’s annual season and that year she was one of the few singers who came in for praise from The Hindu’s acerbic critic KV Ramachandran.

MS’ popularity graph soared from 1937 onwards, her immense talent and golden voice aided in no small measure by the managerial abilities of T Sadasivam, the Advertising Manager of the magazine Ananda Vikatan. He was taking an enormous interest in her career and this led to her first film opportunity in 1938 – Seva Sadanam. The success of the film further heightened MS’ popularity and when the December Music Season of 1939 came around, her concert at the Music Academy on 30th December necessitated extraordinary police bandobust. The crowds would simply not keep away from her.

The Gramophone Company of India had advertised MS’ gramophone records on the front cover of the Music Academy’s souvenir that year. This was an unprecedented honour. Gate collections were great, with audiences at the Senate House, the venue of the Academy’s conference that year, from six in the morning. .
There was a great crowd to listen to MS that evening and even the cavernous hall was filled to capacity. Audiences had overflowed to the double winged staircase that led to the upper floor and the balcony beyond. The doors could not be closed and those outside clamoured to be allowed in. As the nightingale sang, organisers had a tough time in sending away those who could not get in. The next day The Hindu published an apology on behalf of the Music Academy to the public for the poor organisation that led to the chaos.

In 1940 too, MS made it to the cover of the Academy’s souvenir but differences of opinion between Sadasivam, by then MS’ husband, and KV Krishnaswami Iyer (KVK), the tough President of the Academy, led to her concert being cancelled at the last minute. Friends and well-wishers effected a reconciliation in the subsequent year and MS once again resumed performing for the Academy.

In 1941, efforts began in the Madras Presidency for ensuring that Tamil was recognised as a musical language. There were demands that concerts in Tamil-speaking regions ought to comprise songs only in that language. This was bitterly opposed by the Music Academy and the IFAS, both of whom feared that this would result in the loss of songs in other languages. The Tamil Isai Sangam came up in 1943 thanks to the efforts of the lovers of Tamil language. The first Tamil Isai Conference was held in December 1943 and MS sang for the Sangam, her concert netting Rs 3000 in ticket sales. The enraged Music Academy decided to boycott MS from then on. Encouraging them to come to this decision was TT Krishnamachari (TTK), the music-loving entrepreneur and Congress man, who was to later become a Minister in the Government of India.

The boycott of MS continued till 1947. Sadasivam actively promoted the Mylai Sangeetha Sabha, set up as a rival to the Music Academy. KVK worked assiduously to ensure that the Academy was successful. In 1947 this culminated in the purchase of the Music Academy’s present property. The institution began dreaming of building a modern auditorium on the premises and needed money. By then MS’ concerts for charitable causes were legendary. TTK had also become a fan of her music. Given such propitious circumstances, it was but a question of time before MS returned to the Academy. She sang once again for it on the 28th of December that year, accompanied by T Chowdiah on the violin, Kalpathi Ramanathan on the mridangam and Alangudi Ramachandran on the ghatam. And on the bill of fare were plenty of Tamil songs.

MS like several other artistes such as Semmangudi, GNB and DK Pattammal sang free for the Academy, helping it to save money.

For years it was her practice to accept only the Academy’s printed souvenir as her remuneration. From the 1950s, as the Academy stepped into overdrive on its funds collection to build a modern auditorium, MS gave numerous charity performances for the cause.

The dream became reality when on October 5th, 1955, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone for the new auditorium. The event was followed by a concert by MS and it was on this occasion that the prime minister remarked, “Who am I, a mere Prime Minister, to say anything about a queen, a queen of songs?” .
TTK in his speech singled out MS’ contribution and said that he would like to thank ” the lady who has by her innumerable benefit concerts helped many an educational and cultural cause in this country.” Later MS contributed once again to the cause of the Academy, by performing charity concerts. .
These ensured that the new auditorium was completed in 1962.
By then, it had become customary that each year, during the Season, MS would perform at the Academy on Christmas Day. The Hall would be full of people, all mesmerised by her music with several women in the audience taking careful notes of what she wore as well! The album here is that of a recording done at the Academy during the Season of 1956. It is noteworthy to point out that the mridangam accompaniment is by maestro V Nagarajan, who shortly thereafter became a kanjira artiste. In 1968, the Academy conferred the Sangita Kalanidhi, the highest award in the world of Carnatic music on MS. It was the first time a woman artiste was receiving it. Several women belonging to affluent families of Madras decided to get together and present a cash award to the MS on the occasion, only to have the star asking them to give it to the Academy.

MS sang at the Academy every year till 1977 after which she and Sadasivam having decided that all of her concerts would henceforth be only for charity, her December performances ceased. But she sang again to raise funds for the Academy’s mini hall. In the 1990s, she was to lay the foundation for the Academy’s Teachers College of Music premises.

As was characteristic of her, she did not once claim any credit for having helped the Academy at various times.

In 2004, when MS died, the Academy dedicated its annual season to her memory and the souvenir cover once again carried her photograph. Never has any other artiste made it to the cover of the Music Academy’s souvenir even once, let alone thrice.

In 2006, The Hindu announced that the Sangita Kalanidhi designate each year would receive a cash award of Rs 1 lakh and that this would be known as the Sangita Kalanidhi MS Subbulakshmi award.
MS is no more, but the Academy is one of the testimonies of her musical greatness and her support for deserving causes.

Today, the 105th birthday of M.S.Amma, the Goddess of Music, I am flooded with memories of attending a few concerts of MS. In Aug 2016, my first article in Sruti magazine was published. That was my experience of attending MS concerts. It is an interesting account of a few concerts I could attend. It is a lengthy article. The article is given below for enjoyment of rasikas. This is the article sent by me. Sruti would have made some editing before publishing.

FOLLOWING MS AROUND THE COUNTRY

I was blessed to hear the music of M.S right from my childhood from my mother, a good singer, who would sing all M.S songs- the film songs of Meera, Sakunthala, Sevasadanam, Savithri as well as those classical songs released on vinyl records of those days. Those are the best examples of MS Amma's voice and its versatility. Those film songs penned by Papanasam Sivan, Kalki and music set by S.V.Venkatraman and others, you cannot simply label them as light songs. The contents were of highest order in terms of bhakthi and the classical tunes sung by M.S.Subbulakshmi in her ethereal voice were simply haunting. That voice of M.S could do wonders with its infinite reach and modulation. There are long kaarvais and then there come some moments where the voice instantly flashes out a mind blowing brigha. No wonder that those songs were a craze among music buff all over India at that period. Then came a set of 3 LPS, with V.V.Subramaniam, T.K.Murthy and T.H.Vinayakram as accompanists. That set of LPs provided the gold standard for many classical gems like Viriboni, Meenakshi memudam, Akhilandeswari, Palimsu Kamakshi, Hariharaputhram, Bhogeendrasayinam etc. My music teacher, while teaching me Viriboni, advised me to hear M.S version of Viriboni for perfection. The Bhairavi alapana for the song Enati Nomu phalamo was one of the best Bhairavis I have heard. Wholesome alapana with the choicest brighas tossed with such non-chalance, delivered with laser precision, no loss of any tone whatsoever -- a virtually limitless sojourn into the octaves to make it enchanting. Her Sruti sudham is astounding. True- she has been gifted with a golden voice. But her sruti sudham is beyond the gift of God. It is the result of her assiduous practice right from her childhood with two tamburas and caressing that voice with utmost care and avoiding excess utilisation or mis utilisation of the voice. That is the secret of her voice remaining with the same tonal colours and timbre till the end.

The early part of my life was in Trivandrum, my own native place, and some how I never got an opportunity to hear any live concert of M.S in Trivandrum. But the urge to hear a live concert of MS was growing strong and we were a group of young boys with the same interest hearing and discussing about the music of MS. Then in the year 1983 we heard that the great MS was coming to Anandavadi, her annual pilgrimage to the Ashram of Swami Atmananda in Malakkara near Chengannur where she will be giving a concert. Myself and two of my friends decided to make it to the unknown place and see MS, whom we adored as the Goddess of music. We reached the venue by 7 PM, which involved four hours journey by train. The venue- Oh! No words to describe. It is a vast area of 50-60 acres densely covered with vegetation of all types. The place now looked like a great marriage hall. It resembled like the previous day function of a Brahmin marriage. The area was densely covered with jasmine flowers with the perfume engulfing the entire area. The inmates of the Ashram consisting of lot of Westerners and Malayalees all dressed with flowers and silk sarees immaculately for the occasion. All the guests were received at the entrance and taken to their seats. We could see lot of people sitting on fences and tree tops to listen to the heavenly music, their exposure to music uncertain.

The concert started at 8.30 PM. I could see the great M.S seated in the centre in an olive green silk saree, that in born divinity, radiance, beaming for yards ahead with daughters Radha Viswanathan and Vijaya Rajendran providing vocal support. I do not remember the name of the accompanists that day. With the two tamburas – Lakshmi and Saraswati immaculately tuned and the nadam embracing the vast area, when the customary invocation slokam Om Nama Pranavarthaya started, I felt goosebumps, the moment which I yearned for years. Then came Teratiyakarada in Gowlipantu, addressed to the Lord to remove the undesirable mental blocks and move towards the darsan of the Lord and attain Moksha. Very few at that age can capture that energy, that combination of lucid clarity, perfectly aligned pitch, fluid vocal dexterity, stage presence, total involvement and absorption, sadhana and bhakthi that make any M.S concert a divine experience. I remember the songs even now. Teratiyakarada followed by Aparadhamula, Sabhapathikku veru deivam, Jaya jaya Padmanabha, Seethamma Mayamma, Sree Krishnam bhaja manasa, Swararagasudharasa and her favourite devotional pieces and bhajans which created a trance among the rasikas gathered. One new song in that concert was a Malayalam song in Yadukulakambodi starting Atmananda Gurur devo jaya jaya - a very moving piece in Yadukulakambodi. The elaborate alapanas of Lathangi, Abhogi, Thodi, Yadukulakambodi and Sankarabharanam were pregnant with the choicest brighas, gamakams, glides and long akara passages all in the right proportion which made the audience spellbound. The liberal doses of neravals and swara prastaras appealed to the connoisseurs and laymen alike. The neravals of M.S are not display of her virtuosity or vocal gymnastics. They reveal a skilful combination of the choicest sancharams, brighas, kampitha gamakams, jaru prayogams, akarams, etc artistically employed to portray the bhavam of the lines chosen for neraval. She is one of the very few musicians who can transpose into the mind of the composer and reflect the bhavam of the composer. The thousands of listeners who were there including the Swamiji, his disciples and other inmates were simply blown by the devotion, commitment and dedication to God which made the concert one of the rare experiences they had from M.S. We recorded the concert with a portable tape recorder of those days and throughout our journey till Trivandrum, we were reliving through those unforgettable moments hearing the concert in the Railway Station, train, everywhere.


It was in that concert that a L.P. of M.S, Radhamadhavam was released which later became my lullaby for many years. Verses composed by Swami Atmananda in Malayalam set to the choicest classical ragas by Kadayanallur Venkatraman and rendered by MS with the impeccable Malayalam pronunciation and musical acumen which very few non Malayali musicians would attempt.


Many great people have appreciated the vak sudham of M.S. When learning of Vishnu Sahasranamam was a challenge for me, my listening to the LP Record of M.S daily and reciting along with the record, facilitated quick learning. Through her records of the numerous Suprabhatams and Stotrams, she has entered into the pooja room of each household and induced many people to learn and make them a part of their daily pooja in their homes. Many temples all over India wake up to the Suprabhatams rendered by M.S.


My next opportunity for hearing M.S in a live concert happened in 1986, that too quite unexpectedly in New Delhi. I had gone for a training in Lucknow and a casual glance in a local newspaper gave the information that the great M.S is being given the Spirit of Freedom Award by VST Industries followed by her concert in the Sirifort Auditorium, New Delhi. VST has honoured itself by choosing MS for this award. For, has she not induced freedom spirit among lakhs of people with her inspiring songs composed by Subramania Bharati, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Narsi Meha and others during the freedom struggle. She had contributed lakhs of rupees for the freedom struggle by way of donations collected through her music concerts. In that concert, an excellent booklet containing anecdotes about M.S and some vary rare pictures in high quality paper, printing and design was distributed free. That remains one of my pride processions till date. That day she sang Endaro Mahanubhavulu, Nee irangayenil pugalethu, Rama nee samanamevaru, RTP in Mohanam and some bhajans. Elaborate alapanas of Athana, Kharaharapriya and Mohanam received thunderous applause from the listeners. She still had all her range even at that age and the serenity, command over musical acumen, variety in repertoire, sense of proportion and sincerity of execution did cast a spell on the audience. We have heard about the hard work and practice she puts in for each song before presenting in the concert stage. As a result, each of the songs sparkled like an elegantly polished diamond. You should remember that her repertoire was immensely large, covering various composers in various languages and she spared no effort to internalise them, get the perfect diction and feel in whatever language she sang. The concert extended to two and half hours and the huge audience assembled there sat as though they were in a trance. I witnessed an unusual scene at the end. Besides hundreds of people taking autographs, scores of people, young and old, offered their sashtanga namaskarams to the Goddess of music- this I have not seen in the south. That is the simple proof that M.S music has entered their hearts- whether initiated into Carnatic music or not.


Another opportunity to hear M.S live concert came in Bangalore in the year 1989 in the Rama Seva Mandali for the Ramanavami Festival. M.S. used to be regular performer in this venue. For any M.S concert, people used to throng the area from nearby villages and towns right from the after noon. When the curtain unfolded, I saw M.S seated in a murroon silk saree with her everlasting aura of peace and divinity spreading around and Radha Viswanathan and Gowri Ramnarayanan providing vocal support. That day, an LP record of MS, New Classicals, comprising compositions of Mysore Yoganarasimham was released. This is another instance of her constant endeavour in expanding her repertoire even at the advanced age. An earlier example was the Balaji Pancharathnamala records which revealed her passion to learn Annamacharya compositions, even after crossing 65 years. Even though sporadically a few musicians had sung Annamacharya compositions before that, wider awareness and acceptance of Annamacharya songs came only after M.S has released the L.P records.


M.S started the concert with her master piece Viriboni varnam followed by many songs including Devadideva in Sinduramakriya, Manasuloni, Kamalambam bhajare-Kalyani, Nijathanija- composition of Mysore Yoganarasimham in ragam Bhanudhanyasi for the enjoyment of the huge crowd assembled in the venue. A Narayanateerthar Tarangam – Mamakaparadhassatham in Thodi preceded with elaborate alapana and Thiru vazha- Oonjal song of Thayar and Perumal in ragamalika were new songs I could hear in that concert. One remarkable achievement personally for me was that I could take my mother who was longing for many decades to see M.S, to this concert and she felt so elated after seeing M.S- her idol from childhood.

Thus a music concert of M.S is not a mere concert where a chain of songs are presented or a display of vocal gymnastics or a show of intelligence. It is a Divine experience in itself.

Between 1940 and 1952, Smt.MS was at her peak, in her voice, theme of her songs, benefit concerts and All-India reach. Those golden years survive only through her 78 RPM records. - numbering more than 50- excluding her songs in Meera ( Tamizh and Hindi) and the other three films.. The best of them were around 1947. Unfortunately, not a single concert is available today. ..There may be a few in the Archives of Music Academy, and Indian Fine Arts Society. ( the same fate for NCV concerts also) ..

Vidwan K.S.Kalidas has created an upload of about 18 such classical and semi-classical songs of that period in 78 rpm records.

Even a very erudite and painstaking team like NaadhaBrungha is unable to locate any full length concert of Smt.MS in the period 1940- 1955..

On the occasion of Smt.MS 105-th Birth day, the team has uploaded the concerts in Music Academy- from 1955. - October. when Nehruji laid the foundation stone for the new building for Music Academy. and what is more , stayed back to listen to the full concert.

Following this upload, Naadhabrunga has presented us with the full concerts by Smt.MS , 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, and so on upto 1964.
A real treat. This period included her Edinburg, and UN concerts. And Vaak has uploaded the concert in Music Academy in 1968.
It was a watershed year. She was 52 then.
She continued to give good concerts in 1969, ,,,to 1977

A few others also have uploaded some famous concerts in Bombay.

The 1967 concert was entirely devoted to kruthis of Thyagaraja Swami- but that particular concert is yet to be located and uploaded.
@cienu is requested to take the help of the team and place it in web. Also, the HAMPI concert of Purandaradasa sahityhyams and Manipal concert.

According to NaadhaBhrunga team, the 1955 concert is the earliest one available of Smt.MS. ..She was 39 then. All her concerts from 1955 to 1975 have been collected except the UN concert in 1966 and 1967 concert in Music Academy ( that season was dedicated to Thragaraja Swami kruthis).,The concert at 'PARVATHI' -Mysore also has been given.

So happy that you asked for that particular song. Here it is.
in the heavenly voice of Smt.MS of 1940-1950 decade.
I think it was recorded around 1945.- during the Thamizh Isai movement..led by Smt.MS, Sri.Sadasivam, KALKI and TKC Mudaliyaar.

The lyrics also have been given, As you say, it is a ragamalika. beginning with Shanmugapriya and ending with Chenchurutti. I am not sure about the ragam of the second stanza. ('yamarintha pulavarile')

The song is followed by 'Chenthamizh Nadenum poathinile' as if a continuation of the ragamalika - in vervy Chenchrutti again and some lovely orchestration, most likely by SVVenkataraman, the change from Chenchurutti to Madhyamaavathy.. 'vaazhiya

[ A summary of a paper presented at M.S Music and Dance Festival held on September 16 and 17, 2006 at Toronto , Canada , organized by ‘Sampradaya Dance Creations’]

The Tamil Isai movement in the 30’s and 40’s was an important chapter in the history of Carnatic Music in Tamilnadu . In its broadest form, it represented the longing of the common Tamil man to listen to music in his mother-tongue. Though influential personalities like Annamalai Chettiar, Rajaji, T.K.Chidambaranatha Mudhaliar and ‘Kalki’ Krishnamurthy supported the movement, the challenge facing the proponents was a formidable one. While there was no dearth of learned treatises and long lectures on the glory of Tamil Isai from various pundits , ‘the proof of the pudding was in the eating’. So the Tamil Isai movement needed musicians with a strong commitment to the cause. With great encouragement from her husband, Sadasivam, M.S. Subbulakshmi entered the arena . Even though the powerful Music Academy boycotted her for giving a full-length Tamil Isai concert in the 40’s, M.S. stood her ground . Though M.S. is now seen as an integrator of the national musical psyche through her many songs in many languages, her support of the Tamil cause was a great asset to the movement in its early years.

M.S. used her musical strengths to demonstrate that Tamil songs were not inferior to others in the myriad aspects that excellent music demands. If truth be told, one can say that she already had the odds in her favours. Having already captivated the pundits and the lay-persons alike by her charming songs in Tamil films, it was relatively easy for her to present carefully selected Tamil songs in her music concerts to demonstrate the various aspects of music in which they excelled . Moreover, she used two platforms to showcase good Tamil songs ! Besides music concerts, she also sang Tamil songs for the dance performances of Radha and Anandhi, Sadasivam’s and Kalki’s daughters . Perhaps Subramanya Bharathi’s songs were first introduced in dances during such performances.

The history of Carnatic music can be usefully divided as : pre-Trinity , Trinity and post-Trinity periods, because of the revolutionary and bench-mark nature of the music of Thiruvarur Trinity . But an important aspect of the Tamil isai movement was to convince the listeners about the rich nature of Tamil Music in the pre-Trinity period . M.S. devoted special attention to the forms and compositions that formed the early formative years in the music of Tamil land. One of the earliest of such was ‘ vadavaraiyai maththaakki’ , a folk song from the Tamil epic, Silappadhikaaram, a ragamaalika tuned by S.Venkataraman, the music director of ‘Meera’ fame ; in fact, the song reached World Stage though her U.N. concert. The Tamil epic ( circa 100-500 A.D. ) remains even today as a proof of the rich musical traditions that existed in those early years. M.S. also included many songs from the Bhakthi period in Tamil history, glorified by Saivite and Vaishnavite saints. Jnaanasambandhar’s (circa 600- 630 A.D.) hymn ‘ siraiyaarum’ in suddha saaveri and in Thisra triputa tala fascinated listeners with its laya . Her rendition of a Sundaramurthy naayanaar’s hymn , ‘baktharaay paNivaargaL ellaarkkum adiyEen’ , reminded listeners about the same sentiment Tyagaraja expressed much later in ‘entharO mahaanubaavulu’ . Other songs , such as ‘ vaNdinam muralum’ (thoNdaradipodi aazvaar) in thOdi and ‘mudiyonRi’ ( periyaazvar) not only demonstrated the early musical history of Tamils but also laid the ground-work for the bhakthi element, which dominates much of present-day Carnatic music even today.

Demonstration of laya aspects of Tamil isai was another constant feature in M.S’ concerts. She used to include in her concerts Thiruppugazh –s , composed by Saint aruNagirinathar (15th century) , a treasure-house of rhythmic intricacies , the like of which is rarely seen even in modern kriti-s. In fact, one of the earliest gramophone records of M.S. featured the Thiruccendhoor Thiruppugazh , ‘vidhi pOlu mundha’, in ataaNaa. Another folk-song type of composition , kaavadic cindhu , that she sung often also emphasized a different , swaying laya aspect of early Tamil music, not encountered in kriti-s.

To answer opponents of Tamil isai movement who used to argue that ‘Tamil songs were good only as tail-end pieces’ , M.S. used to take up for elaborate rendition with raga alapana , not only kriti-s of Tamil composers like Papanasam Sivan and GOpaalakrishna Bhaarathi, but very early Tamil compositions, which were fore-runners to kriti-s. Thus MaaNikkavaasagar’s soul stirring songs from Thiruvempaaavai, such as ‘ aarththa piRavi’ (sankaraabaranam) and ‘moyyaar thadam’ (poorvi kalyANi) have often served as main pieces of her concerts .

M.S. demonstrated the lyrical beauty of many Tamil songs by her selection . Papanasam Sivan’s ‘maa ramaNan’ which was featured in her first Tamil film ‘sEvA sadanam’ and which she continued to sing in her concerts, is a good example of such lyrical beauty. M. S. also never failed to give a ‘balanced ‘ concert (thanks to the careful planning by Sadasivam) and it was a matter of great joy to many Tamils that her World Music Day concert featured three Tamil songs: a Thiruppugazh, a verse from Kamban’s Ramayana and a Subramanya Bharathi song, all of which mention music in their lyrics. It is redundant to add that M.S. included many Tamil songs with emotional fervour and bhakthi , both in the ‘heavy’ items as well as the ‘thukkadaa’-s. The fact that some songs, like Rajaji’s composition that she popularized ,still are favourite requests in many modern concerts , speaks highly about the music of M.S. that emphasized bhakthi as an overarching element . M.S. also delighted the listeners by constantly adding songs from contemporary Tamil composers like Thooran and Ambujam Krishna to her repertoire ; in fact, the study of the Tamil songs that M.S. had sung in her life-time would be a good way to understand the major part of the history of Tamil music, covering a period of more than 1500 years.

I am just wondering: no, it wasn't a super star who was impressed by this edifice of grand proportions. Through her husband's involvement with the freedom movement and with its leaders--she would have realized what it stood for--a venue for the voice of the people. That perhaps filled her with awe and made her want to sing in such a remarkable place...

In this collection, kAlamAm vanathil and Sentamizh nADennum pOdinilE are my favorite ones! nenjukku nIdiyum tOLukku vALum which we don't find here is also a gem.

Yes, MSS has sung the vandE mAtaram translation of Bankim Chandra here, but it is the second version of his translation. His original one 'iniya nIr perukkinai' in my view is more lyrical for singing. They must have had their own reasons for choosing his second version, I suppose...

Madam, There were two translations of this poem of Bankim, by Baarathy. In the Tamil university site, 'iniya Neer perukkinai' version is mentioned as the first version . It is really in very poetic lines but a bit too difficult to understand for average tamil readers. Perhaps, that is why , Baarathy himself came out with the second version.

Some modern tunesmith can set it to a suitable raagamaalikaa and render it in concerts.

M S Subbulakshmi at the Commonwealth Auditorium, London, on the evening of the 26th of November, 1966. This concert was at the tail end of Smt. Subbulakshmi's tour of Europe and the United States, in connection with her performance at the United Nations in New York. Yes, Shankarank,
I heard it again, and this time with 'ninnu vinA' focused on! The impact of the event lingers...
I have written about this elsewhere, years ago, I guess. Fitzroy Square concert is how I referred to this unbelievable concert (both in its beauty and the unbelievable element that it was happening in early winter in the UK and not in Chennai!).

The songs which I remember from then was the opener--Hari kambhOdi being a pet rAga and yes, navarasa kannaDa to me, being sort of exotic then and a few others that she sang. The hall was charged with wonderment that such a thing was happening in London, and it was MSS too, singing right in front of us.

For some reason, I had thought that it was on her way to NY that she sang in London. Now I realize it was on her way back.

On a personal note, I was concerned, all the way to the concert: a bus ride, then two tube trains before we reached there, with a toddler with us and my fear that they might not allow us in with a child on tow! They didn't stop us, but we sat at the very last row so that if she would disrupt the assembly, one of us could take her out speedily! So, I wouldn't have heard the concert as I should have, immersing myself in it. Moreover, it was all like a dream, a piece of unreality!

I don't know if there were other children there, but mine was well-behaved and even drew appreciative glances, dressed in a pAvADai (langA) and blouse, exotic in those days!

Sweet memories and that there is a firsthand account makes it even sweeter. You are one of the blessed many to have listened to her direct. People like me have not even seen her in person. In a musical setting, I could only witness her photograph kept in homage to her, at Bharat Kalachar on the year of her passing.

SrI TNS sang a sedate concert that year, without frills, with Sri Varalakshmi and SarOja dala nEtri at NGS accompanied by SrI Guruvayoor Durai and I didn't realize it was in her memory until, Tanjore Marathi Grundig tape collector sensed that on hearing the song list and pointed that out to us youngsters.

I had met so many times when MS amma was staying at valluvarkottam area. She has come to my cousins marriage with Sadasivam mama in 1980s . Also one of my elderly cousin assisted her a bit as she was working in shankar netralaya. I have also talked with her in that valluvarkottam house but hardly knowing her larger stardom. Once for my school friend who was rajaji great grand son , she sang kurai onrum illai and i think one more song impromptu along with Smt Radha in a hall called SGS Sabha in T Nagar.

On the above concert , this is not the best of her, i love the one where ms amma sang that pushpalatika song , that number of ms amma is one of a kind . THe way Ms amma sings shankarabharanam as a main is so deep and intensely carnatic when compared to say few other numbers like say kharaharapriya where it is bit curtailed.

I personally like ms amma singing pushpalatika, any swarajathis, cintamani,shankarabharanam main that ms persona is so different than what usually comes in the last 30 mins of every concert. Her power of voice with emote just balances so well with these rendition of the few that i have mentioned.

Incidentally 2 weeks back when i went to vidwath samajam , i could see a placard where it is mentioned that ms amma donated for sadguru idol sannithi in mylapore, that is a phenomenal idea by stalwarts like Tiger -HMB- MS Amma - Parur Sundaram Iyer to exclusively have just one diety and a hall for sadguru thyagaraja. Institutions are more important then say great sabha patrons who always have difficulty in finding the next generation to continue.

Not that you don't know about all the enormous funds she garnered for many charities in the bygone years .The Kasturba Fund was one--initiated by Gandhiji in memory of his wife which benefited women no end--in educating and training them so that they could stand on their own legs. The extent of her service was limitless. Her singing benefit performances for hospitals and schools were countless--this meant institutions all over India.

That experience, along with PeriyavAL's grace gave her extra benevolence. It added mightily to that inborn emotive gift of hers. It is the hallmark of her singing.
