Allied ragas / Family of ragas

Post by Christian Kenit Ram »

Starting with - Abhogi, Sriranjani and Jayamanohari as presented by Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcSJv6gOmKo

They all remind me of Bageshri ; however from a short search session it seems that it´s mostly Hindustani commentators who point out the proximity of Abhogi + Bageshri , haven´t seen CM sites doing the same ...
Moreover , Bageshree has it´s own raagang in HMusic .

Btw , I will be using the term " Raga parivar " for my own hand written Carnatic notes since raagang is the Hindustani term for raga families and raganga ragas means something different in Carnatic sangeet . I only found one search result for " raga parivar " and it´s in a PDF of music history .

Again J Kumaresh : Hindolam , Jayanthasri and Varamu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw8C2vVJUxE

Interestingly Varamu also reminds me of Bageshri , so I would include it in the Bageshri/Abhogi family mentioned above . ( Or at least in my handwritten notes , if this should be unusual )

One of the user comments mentions that changing the G in Hindolam produces Sallapa/Surya . Indeed it is called Madhura/Durgeshwari Kouns /ShubhaKouns /SiddhaKouns/Shiveshwar in HMsic and as seen from the names it is part of Kauns-ang . ( Kauns family)

Looking for allies of Ratipatipriya I stumbled upon this site :

https://sunson.wordpress.com/about/rudrapriya/

" The arohana/avarohana of Rudrapriya raga is
S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S | S N2 P M1 G2 R2 S
of the kharaharapriya mela where it skips dha in descent. "

One user comment :

" It sounded like Pushpalatika to my ears. There were also certain Kapi phrases.
Pushpalatika: S R2 G2 M1 P N2 S / S N2 P M1 G2 R2 S "

Shivaranjani .

___ http://musicalhues.blogspot.com/2009/12 ... -raga.html

Nearness to Karnaranjani confirmed .

___ Shrimanohari / Shree Manohari has been proposed by the site https://meditation.indianclassical.org/ .
Makes sense as it sounds like Shivaranjani + ma .

Sadly it seems to be very rare / having disappeared .
https://www.karnatik.com/ lists it but gives no song examples .

What about Sivasakthi ? Isn't that also like Varamu / Bageshri
Sivasakthi and Varamu sound the same to me

Even I learnt recently Bhooshaavali which is janya of Vachaspathi - but couldn't tell the difference - the kruthi seemed to me like Paaraathparaaa only - what's the point of such ragams ?

Vandanadarini and Saraswathi are also bit like that - former one is not as developed as latter so can be easily mistaken for the latter

Sriranjani sounds close to Aboghi and Reethi gowla sounds closer to Ananda Bhiravi, I think.
