I am overwhelmed by this surge of insight into the life of a man whose inner life and life's work went unnoticed by many. Why? Even to some of us who are from his family.

What an inspired mind, its search and reach! Its thirst for knowing! The joy of it all!

Thank you my friends, for all that you have brought here...

Dr. Venkatasubramanian, younger though you are to me, I salute you!

They both loved the abundant roses in our little garden and loved being out there. I clicked this picture along with some others, but could only locate this. Thanks to Devika (his daughter) who sent me this. The picture doesn't show up the greenery while copied, but here's a picture all aglow for the centenary.

Thanks, VK! If it isn't too much trouble, would like to see it in the Literature Section (tamizh) KavithaigaL thread too where I have written a poem about him today...

Thanks, Pasupathy for the 8th of Feb program! This is a commendable effort of a group of admirers of VVS coming together! Came to know of it only recently by connecting with them.

On the 9th, an all day celebration in Pallikkarane at the temple and patashala, on his janma Nakshathra.

On the 10th: From 4 PM onwards at Raga Sudha Hall, a celebration by family and friends. Will post the invitation soon :)

For Tamil novels' enthusiasts: I think that Prof B Sadagopan ( mentioned in the invite) is the son of famous Tamil writer Chandilyan (Bashyam). A history Prof who helped his fr in his research for novels.

Pasupathy,
What a treat! Thanks :)

His life with his music, his thoughts on it and his zeal for it are all seen in this writing. His concern for its future, his sense of humor and his flowing writing style are evinced here.

Today's event, the first of the centenary celebrations in and around Chennai (see invitations in the Coming Events Section and one in this very thread) took place in Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan. I reached Chennai only in the afternoon and missed a seminar of scholars cum admirers which I heard was very good.

An interactive session manned by Sri va ve su was in progress when I entered the hall. It was followed by Tyagabharathi in action. VVS's daughter Devika brought to us her Tyaga Bharathi days as a child, now with the Padma Seshadri school children. Like her father, she sang and danced with them, their forming a circle around her. The jai joy feeling children get with music, even long after he started it, was evident in the children on stage. VVS's other daughter Vijaya and her daughter-in-law Ahalya sang with joy from the wings.

This was followed by Sadagopan Patashala children singing a tirukkuraL kIrthanai of VVS, a navaratna song (one about coral), led by Radha Dorairajan. The other song was about nadi (river). I hadn't heard them before, but how the words on repetition did shine! Flowing lines, thinking lines, feeling ones...

After a group of women sang pAsurams, there were people on stage, those who made such a memorable day possible: the organizers, the scholars and the rest. I was filled with happiness and was taken aback by being summoned to the stage! On behalf of those in the family and friends circle who loved and cared about VVS (as he did of us), I accepted with gratitude, the shawl and the precious momento.

You only have to see the invitation for today to know the names of all those who made this remarkable day possible. So many individuals and institutions came together to celebrate a man of music and so much more...

I saw the portrait on stage as I went in and was struck by it. Ms Ranjani Satyan is the painter of this special centenary portrait. She was trained at Kalakshetra and paints pictures of spiritual and national leaders.

VVS's painting has the Ananda vimAnam of Thirupathi in the background (Anand hO, Anand hO!, he sang), and it isn't very far from here, the place where anyone had seen him last...

Thanks to M. Gopalan for his taking the trouble to scout Viravanallur, and then arrange for a celebration on the 29th there at the school and the temple. Hope I can make it there next year on my visit to India. Thanks to him on his being industrious and sharing with us all that he can...

Now, looking forward to tomorrow when the temple and Sadagopan Patashala are going to have a day long celebration--a place where a devout disciple continued the ideals and aspirations of his guru, and where after him, sriram Bharathi's wife sowbhagyalakshmi carries on the tradition...:)

The concluding event of the the three day centenary celebrations last February was a concert by Sumitra Nitin. She sang a number of his own compositions, several ones which he tuned, and a few that he popularized.

Here are three of his compositions, sung by Sumitra Nitin. Charulatha Ramanujam-violin,
B.Ganapathiraman-mrudangam.

Pasupathy,
I had not seen this until today! Thank you...

This is an edited version of the documentary which was made by Sriram Bharathi's wife Sowbhagyalakshmi with love and care for the centenary of VVS. The film was shown during the centenary celebrations as an edited version. This one is even more concise. I had also mentioned the Kamba RamAyaNam concert he had given in Chennai--the way he immersed himself into the work, picking and tuning the verses, and the manner in which he gave a grand kachEri dedicated to Kamban (something utterly new in those days). Literary giants, musicians and music lovers filled Rajaji Hall (Rajaji was there too).

To this day, the songs reverberate in some of us--bEgaDa, pUrvi kalyANi, more, a mega rAgamAlikA, another, a lovely scene by the river--rAmA and sItA walking along, admiring each other which Sumitra Nitin included in her concert she gave of VVS's own compositions and of those which he tuned--from Kamban, Ambujam Krishna's songs and others...

Thanks again...

Thanks, Arasi, for sharing.

If the Kamban Concert date is known, one can search in magazines for any reports.... ( perhaps in 'Kalki' whose archives seem to be available....) http://kalkionline.com/archivessale/archives_home.php

Perhaps some " sahrudaya" will undertake this work?

( I am bursting at the seams with unfinished business...otherwise I would have been the one to delve into this.... )

Devika Raman is the daughter of Shri V V Sadagopan. She speaks so well and sings also well. i have kept the pointer where she talks the contribution of V V S . V V S composition style and his lyrical content with creations like Thyagabharathi is also elaborated . VVS joy of learning music is explained. V V S is truly a renaissance man .

Perhaps the only recording of Shri V V Sadagopan is in the below link. His voice bit sounds like GNB or even like manakkal rangarajan and also a shade of Ariyakudi is there. OPen throated vocal honesty,. 2 other mahavidwans Lalgudi Jayaraman and Vellore Naadabadran are giving great support.

The song list is 1. Sarasamukhi-gowdamalhar 2. Manasaguruguha (R ,S)- ananda bhairavi 3. Dudusuga - Saveri and 4. ragamaliga viruththam ending with ennai thalli pOdAthE kannA -KAnadA -????

For me 2 and 4B ennai thalli pOdAthE shows his grouding then of his old and his renaissance with the kAnaDA , whose song is that his own or ambujam krishna ???

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EiSHhxTUAo

Unpretentious voice is showing strain of age , i wish we got 20 years back one of his recording.

Rajesh,
The announcer got it wrong about the kAnaDa song. It is 'ennaith thaLLi ODAdE kaNNa, chinnathanam aNugAdu kA mannA--maNNaith thaLLi malai ODumO?...Yes, his own composition.

Yes, not his prime days voice but the emotive quality in it and the way the two super instrumentalists go along with his music is just precious. The two go back a long way with him, as young musicians who would frequent VVS's house and spend endless hours making music together.

Above all, the sound quality in this recording is excellent--perhaps the only one among all other audios which are available, thanks no end to the contributor...
