Vijay:
Nice review!
AFAIK, like KVN, TM Krishna is also a cricket addict (as is SS)...he plays left handed or something like that....I do not remember details, but when he gave a concert in Purdue a few years back, I think he had participated in the local desi cricket tourney before the concert.
A slight aside:
pAhi parvata nandinI - the day 9 navarAtri kritI - before I heard KVN's version of this (and forswore all others!), I first heard it in a maLyALam movie (I have since not been able to identify the movie) sung by KJY I think, and picturized on a beautiful dance by Kamala (Lakshman), Rhadha, and Vasanti. If anyone has info on this movie, please post!

Thanks for that aside Ravi...I am aware of Krishna's fascination for cricket but didn't know he was a southpaw...I undertsand that he also plays tennis...
Padmini, agree wiith you on the acoustics and the length of the Pallavi but I have to say this was among the best TMK concerts I've heard recently. There was a conscious effort at restraint which I felt contributed significantly to concert aesthetics...except for the above mentioned neraval, tala was perfectly maintained and the sruthi was spot on throughout - particularly during the Sankarabharanam alaapana, the effect was simply haunting.
Because of all this, some of the typical TMK zing may have been absent but I for one did not not miss it much...

I just LOVED the review!
@ Vijay, I feel you could take it up professionally(maybe you already have...)
Was the Chenjukambodhi kriti not VararAgalaya by Thyagaraja?
And as regards the note books on stage, doesn't he generally use a sophisticated tele-prompter kind of device when he can( I saw something of the sort when I attended his concert at the Academy this year...)

Thanks Jigyaasa - it was not Vararagalaya but I could tell that the raga was the same. There is apparently a popular GNB composition as well but I can't remember whether it was that one.
Tele prompter? You mean something like the LCD monitor that KJY uses? I am aware of TMK's tendency of forget the lyrics but I did not think the problem was serious enough to warrant such gizmos!

Jigyaasa has raised a valid point .... the music world (not the retail chain) needs a person of your talent badly.
You must be knowing monster.com ..... they help people find the right match (in terms of jobs I mean) ..... they helped a potential bharatnatyam dancer shift from airport duty to taking up bharatnatyam full time
I think its time you tried out monster.com

I am tempted to agree with you guys...but one has only to refer to the sorry report cards DRS has been sending me on my quizzes to come back to earth. In any case, I don't think you get paid much to write about music - so I'd rather do it for free and hide behind an "L" board (which, BTW, is handy little thing if you're as bad a driver as I am)...
.....anyway, let me close this topic before Meena madam catches the vetti arattai among us backbenchers!!

>> who told you that you needed to be musically well versed to write about music in most newspapers?
Cannot agree with you more after reading the crap that gets dished out in the newspapers. In fact, it seems that you dont even have to be a good writer to be a music critic. All you need to be is some pompous fart with a big attitude and an acid tongue.

>>One wonders whether the reappearance of Akshaya Linga Vibho at the venue within six days offers any parallels with the purported preference of Sabha Secretaries in a certain equatorial city-state, to Chakkani Raja and Mari Vere!
I wonder what city-state you are referring to!
I happen to like Akshayalingavibho too
Especially when it is handled by someone like KVN, MDR or Brinda-Mukta.
How long was the RTP by the way? It has been a long time since I heard an RTP as THE main item of a concert (apart from TNS 2006 with Sankarabharanam, Shashank 2003 with Purvikalyani and OST 2002 with Thodi here). Its a trend I hope to see reversed some day.

The large white thingy in front of him is merely a combination speakers-and-dock for his iPod so that he can play the sruthi that has been recorded in his iPod.Jigyaasa wrote:And as regards the note books on stage, doesn't he generally use a sophisticated tele-prompter kind of device when he can( I saw something of the sort when I attended his concert at the Academy this year...)
Krishna does resort to the use of his notebooks to refresh his memory in case he chooses a kriti that he may not have sung recently. You would see his notebooks also even when the white iPod dock is present on the stage.
Don't speculate about non-existent teleprompters. In fact, just don't speculate unless you have facts to back them up.

The 'large white thingy' is a Bose SoundDock:

Why, Bala, Brunei, of course - the Sultan apparently insists on Neraval at Kantiki Sundara!bala747 wrote:>>One wonders whether the reappearance of Akshaya Linga Vibho at the venue within six days offers any parallels with the purported preference of Sabha Secretaries in a certain equatorial city-state, to Chakkani Raja and Mari Vere!

Anwyay, the RTP was about 25-30 minutes long. You're right about RTPs - even during the Music Season, most artists just force-fit an RTP because it is an Academy concert. This season, one of the performers wound up their RTP within the short time that it took me to hop out and pop in a samosa....
Glad to know that the "thingy" is not a lyrics prompter although such a device may not be very far away...maybe one day we will have artists lip-syncing to recorded music, Milli Vanilli style!

Don't say it!
When I don't mind a slim note book in front of a vocalist, a mini library of bound volumes and all that page turning distracts me. If the page turner of several volumes has some idea of what (s)he is going to sing, surely, the amount of songs (s)he wants to refer to would be minimal and can be jotted down in a spiral notebook which would be less obtrusive.
By the way, jotting down the song would refresh one's memory and reinforce the words as well...

It was Shivaratri on 16th February (night) and hence I guess the selection of this krithi by TMK!vijay wrote:One wonders whether the reappearance of Akshaya Linga Vibho at the venue within six days offers any parallels with the purported preference of Sabha Secretaries in a certain equatorial city-state, to Chakkani Raja and Mari Vere!
