"Incidentally, I find the music lovely too. It’s by the Sitar maestro Pt Ravi Shankar who, for good measure, also created the Raga Tilak Shyam the song is set to. Lata Mangeshkar comes up with a masterly interpretation of this difficult composition. And of course it’s picturised on the ethereally beautiful Leela Naidu .

LATA MANGESHKAR
Born on September 28, 1929, in Solapur, Maharashtra, in a Marathi family, to melodious parents, father Deenanath Mangeshkar and mother Shudhamati, Lata was the eldest of five — sisters Meena Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar.

Here two great songs tuned by Madan Mohan , are being shared.

Singer Anuradha Paudwal, who was rumoured to be one of those who accused Lata Mangeshkar and her younger sister Asha Bhonsle of monopoly, told Pinkvilla, “I don’t believe it was about monopoly. Let me put it this way. One person has reached Mount Everest. For those who can’t even climb a hill, it’s easy to say unhonon hamein chadne nahi diya (they didn’t let us climb). THIS IS A RARE FIND. Smt.MS visited England ..possibly for the Edinburgh music festival..and this may have been one of her concerts in that tour.
She was 47 then.

I am delighted to post this very rare concert of Srimathi M. S. Subbulakshmi held in London, England, at the India House sometime in September or October of 1963. The clarity of this concert is excellent and the songs have been rendered extraordinarily well.
I originally thought this concert to be Smt. MSS’s Cairo concert hence the incorrect labeling in the thumbnail.
Details:
M. S. Subbulakshmi - Vocal
R. S. Gopalakrishnan - Violin
T. K. Murthy - Mridangam
Alangudi Ramachandran - Ghatam
Bombay Kannan - Tambura
Huge thanks to my Dear Balu Mama for this concert!

Can't thank you enough for this, Sam.
Not because it is from old times, but how true it sounds today and will, in the future.
Where the lyrics are universal and timeless--to inspire and educate the young and the old at any time and in any clime. I grew up in those times and it's just by the way.
How the truth of it still shines! How inspiring, and that too voiced by one of the two nightingales of our times!
Even for someone who is journeying the last lap of her life, it is inspiring, to say the least. We discuss
ad infinitum the appropriateness of this and that and yet, simple truths like this shine for ever for anyone to listen to and perhaps even tone down our modern day 'take everything for granted' attitude.
The simple but supportive orchestra section is another sweet aspect of it.
Thanks again, from many of us at that, I bet...

Re: Two Bharata Ratnas : Lata and MSS
Lata 's voice before 1947 was too childlike as that of m.s.rajeswari. nor were the music directors good.
.
Vidwan Kalidss has uploaded a compilation of rarely heard very early 78 rpm records of m.s.subbulakshmi.
These were all in the period 1933 onwards. A revelation.
Here is the list with the vidwan's introduczory remarks.
..
MSS, as a phenomenon in Carnatic Music is well known. What is not so well known is that she cut her first record when she was 10 years old and continued to do so till her teens. Of course, during her illustrious career, she recorded many including film songs, krtis of various composers, bhajans etc. She had also supported her mother Shanmukhavadivu on the veena from the age of 11.
In this collection, a few of her earliest records are that are cute & charming.. There is open throated, 'no holds barred' singing with childish lisp and all!

On Raga Nand - Rajan Parrikar Music Archive
https://www.parrikar.org/hindustani/nand/
.
The perceptive listener will note subtle echoes of Ragas Hameer, Kalyan, and Bihag, each contributing fleeting shades while remaining subordinate to Nand’s unique identity.
.
We set the ball rolling with the familiar exemplar from MERA SAAYAA (1966). Madan Mohan‘s composition, tu jahan jahan chalega, is rendered flawlessly by Lata Mangeshkar.

.
.It's a notable moment in her illustrious career, and it underscores her versatility as a musician. Singing an English song with piano accompaniment at the UN Assembly in 1966, composed by C. Rajagopalachari and set to music by Handel Manuel, showcased her ability to transcend musical boundaries and reach a global audience.
LYRICS:
May the Lord forgive our sins
And gather all the nations
Here under this Uniting Roof.
To give up hate and fear
And learn to understand
Here under this Uniting Roof.
They took the risks of war and dying,
wished us take the better risks of peace
Here under this Uniting Roof..
.
The God in everyman
is an atom too
of measureless potential.
Let us learn to find it
And explode it into lasting peace
Here under this Uniting Roof.
May the Lord forgive our sins
Inspiring us to peace on Earth

Re: Two Bharata Ratnas : Lata and MSS
A very special concert.
1958 ( she was 42 then. Voice qualty).
It was one of the rare solo performaces.
Her daughter Radha viswanathan could not accompany her.
It is full of devitiinal bajans, as it was meant for general Delhi audience assembled to celebrate Indian Independence.
A rare upload by Naadabrungha.

Nādabhṛṅga brings you a special recording of Sangita Kalanidhi Vidushi Smt. M S Subbulakshmi from the archives, in connection with India's 75th Independence Day Celebrations. This concert was performed at New Delhi sometime in 1958. We are extremely grateful to Sri V Shrinivasan for giving us this concert from his personal archives. This concert is made especially special as Smt. M S ends the concert with the National Anthem rather than the traditional mangalam. This concert has been digitally re-mastered to give you a pristine listening experience.

Amjad Ali Khan on M.S. Subbulakshmi: “A Glorious Chapter for Indian Classical Music”
STORY
Amjad Ali Khan writes about the life, music and legacy of M.S. Subbulakshmi – or “MS Amma” or, simply, “MS” – and recounts some of his interactions with her. Through his reminiscences, he also remarks on the futility of referring to music as “Carnatic and Hindustani” and recreates the India of artists of another generation.
This chapter on M.S. Subbulakshmi from Amjad Ali Khan’s book Master on Masters is a rare instance of one great exponent of Indian classical music introducing another. This is valuable to readers for two primary reasons. One, who better than Khan for placing the life of a musical legend like Subbulakshmi in the context of the larger legacy of Indian classical music. Secondly, the personal vignettes Khan narrates – instances of his and his family’s interaction with Subbulakshmi, and her family, weaved in with an introduction to her life and music – lends to the reader the feeling of being an insider in the world of classical music.
We say only ‘classical music’ because Khan is av.....read a great tribute at the link given
..It is our duty to not create a void and distance between the south and the north.
Instead, we should address it as Indian classical music of the south and Indian classical music of the north.”
He communicates, through this short profile, the sense that there are far more conversations and exchanges between the worlds of classical music from the north and south that those who see ‘Carnatic’ and ‘Hindustani’ music in silos would imagine.
MS (as Subbulakshmi is often affectionately referred to as), for instance, trained under Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas, from the north Indian music world.
She had “great regard and reverence” for north Indian vocalists like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Jasraj
. Khan himself refers to his “long discussions” with “great musicians of the south”:
M.S. Subbulakshmi,
Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer,
Balachandra,
Maharajapuram Santhanam,
Emani Sankara Sastry,
Doraiswamy Iyengar,
Lalgudi Jayaraman,
MS Gopalakrishnan and
TR Mahalingam...
Language too, is a wall that the universe of great Indian musicians is capable of transcending with ease.
“Subbulakshmi sang in different languages with utmost ease and perfect diction, consulting the right people to ensure correct pronunciation,” Khan writes
. She learnt Hindi bhajans from Dilip Kumar Roy,
Nanak’s bhajans from traditional Shabad singers
and thumri and dadra from Siddheshwari Devi.

RARA MAYINTIDAKA" (Asavéri)
Oh Raghuvira!
Tyáagarája's Blessedness!
Pray; come tomy house;
I bow to you:
Bless me:
I cannot bear the separation any longer.
Till now, with unfulfilled desire,
I have been in long and vexatious search for you;
Pray, do come today at least, in all your glory;
My. purpose in seeking you is to implore you
every morning to teach me,
to have the privilege of
the Darsan of your enchanting face,
to stand by your side and worship you every day,
and thus be blessed:
Believing that you alone are my refuge, 1 have
allowed myself to be in your grip:
Why do you forget this
and why do you not come to me promptly ?

Re: Two Bharata Ratnas : Lata and MSS
Fascinating!
Bharathidasan must have done this translation and must have sung it while he was performing as a youngster in Pondicheri! When Subramanya Bharathi happened to listen to him at a gathering, he liked his music (I mean, of the then young carnatic musician) and encouraged him no end. Bharathidasan in turn became Bharathi's ardent student and follower (dAsan). Then, a poet of inspiring verses!
Even this early translation from telugu shows his penchant for poetry!

In the translated script, the anupallavi line starts with maRavEn and not maRaivEn??!!
In this context:
Govindan,
How can we ever forget or fail to acknowledge your beautiful translations of Tygaraja's gems in not one but several languages!
A worthy collection--each song meticulously but beautifully translated! A life's work to be proud of!
Still, we take it for granted all such gifts
Rasikas.org members are proud of your amazing skill and patience in bringing to CM not just compositions of Sri Tyagaraja alone, but of other great composers as well, with your lovely translations in several languages, at that!
And, how we take it all for granted--all the work and the skill that have gone into your years of travail!

It is a janya rāgam (derived scale)of the Melakarta ragam Dhīraśaṅkarābharaṇaṃ which is 29th Melakarta raga. In Hindustani music it is called Durga.[1][2] According to the school of Muthuswami Dikshitar, this rāgam is called Devakriya.[1][2] Karnataka Shuddha Saveri, a janya rāgam of 1st melakarta Kanakangi, is called Shuddha Saveri by the Dikshitar school..

Saveri (pronounced sāvēri) is a Carnatic music ragam. This raga is a janya of the 15th Melakarta raga Mayamalavagowla. This raga brings out karuna rasa, i.e. it brings mood of compassion.[1]

Asaveri (asāvēri) is a rāgam in Carnatic music (musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is a janya rāgam (derived scale) from the 8th melakarta scale Hanumatodi. From our Lata Goa Tribute show, our dear friend Archisman Mozumder showcases the classical prowess of Lata ji & how she is at par in skills with those legends & may be even more significant driver of the Art of singing for her reach. As Kumar Gandharva had made it clear "The time we take to Peak in our performances to give a feel of ecstasy to the audience is 30-35 mins with a significant focus and effort. Lata achieves & delivers the same magic in just 3.5 mins of her performance"
Another point that I see here is that most of the classical legends in their performance have strong focus on Raagdaari without giving character to the singer, but What Lata does is beyond this, keeping the film situation and character in mind, if she is singing the classical performance for a devotional saint, or for a stage dance performer, or for a House Wife taken a break from professional singing, or for a Tawayaf performing to her audience. Also highlighted by Chandrashekhar Rao's observation of her vocal powers where another character is driven & navigated by her voice.
Lata Mangeshkar is Alive and still is the fragrance in the air we breathe,. She will remain that never fading fragrance till eternity.
