Here's a composition I'd like help identifying. It's possibly a padam, and the sahAna has strong affinities with present-day kAnaDa. It is being rendered by actor/musician/composer Padmasri Chittoor V. Nagaiah (1904-1973).

Sahana

Post by pattu »

Sahana has been clubbed under the 22nd mela in venkatamakhi scheme. Has anyone heard or does anyone sing the Kamalamba Navavarana in Sahana or any other song in Sahana with the Sadharana Gandhara?

(a) Being clubbed under 22nd mELa in venkaTamakhi scheme does not mean sAdhArNagAndhAra is to be present -- even if antaragAndhAra and/or shuddha gAndhAra are present in the rAga. For instance, Ahiri, which uses shuddha riShabha and mostly antaragAndhAra is classified as a nArI rItigauLai janya.

(b) Some people say that sahAna uses an in-between gAndhAra, or a gAndhAra slightly lowered to generate ranjakam, in some piDis.

(c) I have come across a mention of Krishna singing some MD sahAna krti with sAdhArNa gAndhAra, with some swarams also iIrc.

I didn't know about (b), though I am aware that the gAndhAram in nArAyaNagowLa occurs at a lower frequency (especially in phrases like NGRG).

Any examples of piDis where G in sahAna is especially lowered?

I also have a lot of doubt about gandharam in this ragam. While the main diff.between Jujavanthi and sahAna is alleged to be gandharam and both classified as janyams of Harikambhodhi in almost all references I am utterly confused. Will some one throw in some light ?

Following is the reply given by my musician friend who is abroad for my qn.thro mail.It may benefit a few.

Ji,

This can be treated as one among many case of exceptions such as Senchurutti under HK, despite its varied phrases or Khamas still under HK, even though we use a Kakali Nishadam or even still, Anandabhairavi coming under Natabhairavi though we use a Chatushruti Deivatham or an Andara Gandharam.

So, to understand the categorical representation, you got to identify what a Moorchana is, than merely the Arohana Avarohana Scale which gives you a poor idea on how to employ the phrases.

And you can sing a Sahana and Dwijavanthi without using the Sadharana Gandharam.

Sing these phrases to yourself with no changes in the Gandharam -

For Dwijavanthi -

Sa Ni Da Pa Ri
Ri Ga Sa
Ri Ga Ma Ni Da Pa
Ri Ni Da Pa Ma Ga Ma

The main thing to be noted here is, the Ri, when comes directly from Ma is Dwijavanthi and which is sung like Ga Ma Ri is Sahana.

Hope this clarifies your doubt to some extent. However, if you want to know the Moorchanas according to SSP, we may have a conversation sometime on that.

"Of course, Dwijawanthi and Narayana gowla are related to Sahana to some extent. Actually, Sahana used to be Bhaashanga Raag with Anthargaandhara as Anyaswara and was a Karaharapriya Janya in
Dikshitar- Venkatamakhin`s classification." by Kiransurya.

The last post was in 2011.
Resuming as a simple introduction with youtube clips .
..
Wiki
Sahana (pronounced sahānā) is a popular ragam (musical scale) in Carnatic music. It is a janya rāgam (derived scale) associated with the 28th Melakarta rāgam Harikambhoji...sampoorna Mk system
.cm notation
S R₂ G₃ M₁ P M₁ D₂ N₂ Ṡ
Ṡ N₂ D₂ P M₁ G₃ M₁ R₂ G₃ R₂ S.G3...
The notes used in this scale are
Shadjam,
Chathusruthi Rishabham, ..R2
Antara Gandharam, ..G3
Suddha Madhyamam, ..M1
Panchamam, ..P
Chathusruthi Dhaivatham..D2
and
Kaisiki Nishadham..N2.
.....
The harmonium keys are (CM)
S R1 R2 G2 G3 M1 M2 P D1 D2 N2 N3 S.
..
IN HM they are
S R1 R2 G1 G2 M1 M2 P D1 D2 N1 N2 S.
...
Though it is a sampoorna rāgam (contains all 7 notes), the vakra scale means it is not considered a melakarta, as melakarta rāgams must have strictly ascending and descending scales.

Arohana: S R2 G3 M1 P M1 D2 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D2 P M1 G3 M1 R2 G3 R2 S

It is also classified as a rakti raga (raga with high melodic content).
It is not a bhasahaga raagam as it does not use any note not specified in its parent scale.
..
According to the Dikshitar school Sahana is a janya of 22nd Melakrta Kharaharapriya. Hence the Sahana of Dikshitar school uses Sadharana Gandhara. Nowadays Sahana is rendered only with Antara Gandharam, firmly making it a janya of 28th Melakarta Harikhambhoji.
SHYAAMA SAASTRY does not seem to have composed any kruthi in this raagam.

1
AI summary
. GIRIPAI
In this song, Tyagaraja describes a divine vision he had of Lord Rama.
Pallavi: He states that he unerringly beheld Lord Rama established on a hill (Giri).
Anupallavi: He describes Rama's retinue worshipping Him with flower fans.
Charanam: Overwhelmed with joy and tears, Tyagaraja tries to speak to the Lord. Rama comforts him, promising to "take care" or bless him in five to ten days (often interpreted as a prophecy of his own passing and union with the divine).
....
2
Emanidichevo
The song's title translates to "What destiny have you ordained for me?" or "What have you decided to give me?". In this kriti, Tyagaraja addresses Lord Rama, asking what his fate will be and seeking the Lord's grace, without which one cannot achieve genuine devotion, health, or fame.
3
The song's title translates to "On this earth." In the lyrics, the composer praises Lord Rama, asking if there is anyone on this earth who can truly understand or match the Lord's greatness and grace
.

4
Nijamuka
Meaning:
In reality these men are incompetent to explain your glory. Men appear to be keen on congregational singing but they are like goats compared to the elephant-like stalwarts in the field of devotion. The difference is like that between a lion and a wolf. These men surrender their discrimination to the whims and fancies of libertines just to amass wealth. They are least fit to expound your glory. They appear to be keen on congregational singing merely to appear as devotees in the eyes of others.
.
5
Vandamu raghunandhana
The song offers salutations to "Raghunandana" (Rama), praising him as the one who built the bridge to Lanka and the one who dwells in the heart of Tyagaraja
6
Rake
Tyagaraja reflects on the difficulty of attaining true devotion, stating that "Devotion to Rama does not come simply/easily (urake)".
Key Lyrics: "Urake kalguna ramuni bhakti" (Does devotion to Rama occur just like that?).
Meaning: It emphasizes that spiritual growth requires the association of virtuous people and constant contemplation of the Divine.

7

Pallavi: "raghupatE rAma rAkSasa bhIma" — Lord Rama, the Lord of the Raghu dynasty and the terror of demons.
Anupallavi: "bhrgu sUta mada haraNa muni brnda vandita caraNa" — One who humbled the pride of Parasurama (son of Bhrigu) and whose feet are worshipped by groups of sages.
Charanam Highlights: The verses praise his beauty (eyes like lotus flowers), his role as the protector of the pious, and his identity as the perfect avatar of Vishnu
