Time : 6:30PM - 9:45 PM
Sabha : Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha
Venue : Vani Mahal

Song List:

1) Nee Bhajana Gana - Nayaki - Thyagarajar - OS
2) Ambavani - Keeravani - Harikeshanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar - S
3) Elle Ilankiliye - Thiruppavai - Begada - A
4) Ora Joopu - Kannada Gowlai - Thyagarajar
5) Hariharaputram - Vasantha - Muthuswamy Dikshithar - AS (Krithi preceded by a Shlokam)
6) Amba Neelayadakshi - Neelambari - Muthuswamy Dikshithar
7) Tappulanniyu - Bowli - Harikeshanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar
8) Edhuta Nilichithe - Sankarabharanam - Thyagarajar - ANST
9) Mohanavalli - Manji - Kavi Kunjara Bharathi - O
10) Thillana - Hamsanandi - Harikeshanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar
11) Thiruppugazh
12) Mangalam and Shlokam

A nice start with the crisp Nayaki outline followed by the popular Krithi. Ambavani was sung at a rapid pace with a quick round of Swarams. The Begada was quite short but well portrayed. The Thiruppavai was rendered well. Ora Joopu was a nice filler and then a really nice Vasantha. Brigas flowed in all their glory and TNS delineated all possibilities. There was a good round of Swarams as well. Neelambari was calming while the Bowli Krithi set the stage for a nice Sankarabharanam main. A welcome change for the Krithi-its ages since I heard anyone sing this live. The Krithi was rendered well and a good Neraval was done too. However, once the Swarams started, TNS went into a zone. Kanakku was unleashed and at one point, only Shri Guruvayur Dorai could cope up. There was a Swara exchange between father and son for some time. But TNS was in his elements and could not be matched beyond a point.

The Tani was very good, drawing several praises from TNS. Really one of the enthralling Tanis I have witnessed this season.

Post-Tani, the Manji was rendered at leisure and was beautiful. The Thillana and Thiruppugazh provided a flourishing finish.

Shri VV Ravi provided good support.

Nice review Sathej! However I do miss the reviews on TNS by Smt. Saroja Ramanujam. I hope she comes back to the forum.

Thanks Meena: I thought it was so...a pity that many of the songs from that genre are no longer sung....

I am afraid that you have to become member of the group [email protected] or log in to sulekha.com or carnatica.net or kutcheribuzz to read the reviews of saroja Ramanujam since she has definitely said that she is pulling out of the forum as some take objections to her writings.

It is a pity that Sathej could not notice the 100 percent precise following of Ghatam suresh to the kanakkus of father and son (with perfect anticipation of the changes done by TNKS then and there) and also his guiding VVR. In fact More Bale! Besh! could be heard when suresh was playing. This is nothing to belittle a veteran like Dorai sir. But to make readers aware of the awesome standard of the artistes in intricate laya that day.

Yes, indeed, Shri Suresh drew great acclaim from TNS as did Shri Dorai. I usually don't dwell too much on Thani and the percussion department in general. This is entirely due to my limited understanding of those areas. Thanks for adding on...
