I am pleased to give a link of the live recording of Ghatam Dr Karthick's heArtbeat concert held at Nanganallur for NSTSS on the 7th Feb'08. Sathya was also performing in this ensemble after a long time in a sabha concert.
This ensemble group has made a name for itself and have been performing around the globe. They have also released albums and it was a nice oppurtunity for Sathya to be performing in this group and I hope the members in this group can spend a little time to listen to this music.

Yamaha has named its electric violin (with a pick up) as the Silent Violin. Unless hooked up to an amplifier, the sounds from the violin cannot be heard - perhaps the reason for the name. It is pretty much like the electric guitar. Unlike the violin that Kanyakumari uses when she plays alone or with Kadri, the silent violin has the pick right under the bridge and they claim to have the best pickup in the industry.
You will also notice that it has a funky shape - it has no body or sound box like a normal violin; after all that has no role to play in this violin.

Congratulations to Sathya on this opportunity to play with this group. I listened to them and they all sounded good. And Sathya got to play a few minutes of alapana all by himself in the last song to show case what he can do.
On the idea for the group itself, I think it has some promise to evolve to something unique, though after a few songs, they all seem to have similar structures in that 'Indian Orchestra' kind of mould. But starting with that swaying Mallari is a fantastic idea. Thavil would have been a great accompaniment for that or atleast thavil like bolder style of playing of the percussion instruments for that piece.
I am not sure about Karthick's singing though, if he intends to keep that role for himself or not

One more aspect to the silent violin. The player can plug in an ear phone jack and do the sadakam ( this will cut off the external speakers). In this case, only the player will be able to listen to his playing, and no other person in the household would be bothered/affected ! ! I am thinking of my early years of learning to play violin. This kind of violin would have given our family cat a lot of respite. I always suspected that he died of heart attack !!

VK, you are correct....Karthik should perhaps refrain from singing....as a group their presentation is excellent....Karthik's emceeing is pretty good too...when they were in NZ, while playing mallari, the guy who plays the keyboard connected to a lap top, produced the exact sounds of a thavil and that was indeed remarkable. They should try some more of that.

Arasi....as a violin player myself, played on it, courtesy, Embar.....when connected to nothing and you play on it, you hear nothing....literally nothing. but switch it on, connect to the micro connection and with the ear plug, you hear the normal sounds of the violin. that is just you hear it, but not the guy sitting a feet away from you. Connect the same to the amp and therefore the speaker, you get much bigger sound. I certainly heard a fair bit of distortion out of the big speakers, but in my ear plug, I could not notice any perceptible change.
