On Sunday April 13th,"Give Life "organised a jugalbandi concert by renowned vocalists Bombay Jayasree and Shubha Mudgal. It was a musical feast to the audience of Hyderabad. This programme was for two hours and was just simply superb.[i know a very little about Hindustani music and little about Carnatic music.I hope those who are into these forms of music will forgive my mistakes and willl correct me]The artustes were
Bombay Jayasree-Carnatic vocal
Shubha Mudgal-Hindustani vocal
Embar Kannan-Violin
Sudhir Nayak-Harmonium
Poongulam Subhramanyam-Mridangam
Anish Pradhan-Tabla
Keerthana and Karthika -Tambura
The items included in this grand jugalbandi were
1.Saraswathi ragam
Slokam
Tero hi Naam-SM
Sarswathi Namostute-BJ
2.Khamas [Khamaj in HM]
Maru Bari-Bj
Kanha Re Najariya-SM
3.Abheri[Bimplas in HM]
Bhajare Re Manasa-BJ
Raghuveer Sumeer -SM
4.Sumanesaranjani
Lao Unnayya-SM
Jaya Gange Tunga Tarange-BJ
5.Shivaranjani[sounded much like Shivaranjani]
Papihara Math Bol-SM
Payum Oli nee-BJ
6.Behag
Thillana-BJ
Tarana-SM
The concert began in a Slokam which was shared by both the vocalists and then SM rendered "Tero hi Naam" andexp[lained that Saraswathi was a carnatic raga but her guru made many compositions of HM in carnatic ragas.BJ took up "Saraswathi Namosthuthe" which was sung with great devotion. Then BJ took up Khamas Alapana followed by "Maru Bari" and SM took up "Kanha Re Najariya" in Khmaj and both sang one after the other. The main peice of the day was Abheri which is Bimplasi in HM.The Alapana was done by Embar Kannan and Sudhir Nayak. It was simply superb. The did the alapana one after the other. The audience were enthralled by this wonderful presentation.BJ took up "Bhajare re" of Mysore Vasudevachar where as SM took up a text praising Lord Rama "Raghuveer Sumeer Mann"BJ gave a wonderful Swarakalpana for he lines "Raghuveer" which showed her great manodharmam. The Thaniavarthanam by Poongulam Subhramanyam on mridangam and Sudhir Nayak gave a great satisfaction to the audience.I have no words to describe how good the Thaniavarthanam was. Then came a composition in Sumanesaranajani sung by SM describing the prowess of a boatman in rowing through the river of life.Where as BJ took up Sadasiva Bhrammendral's "Jaya Gange Tunga Tarange".The next piece was in a raga which sounded much like Shivaranajani ."Papeehara Math bol" was sung by SM and BJ sang Mahakavi Subhramanya Bharatiar's "Payum Oli Nee Enakku" which was a pleasing composition. Finally the nightingales concluded with Thillana and Tarana.BJ took up Lalgudi
Jayaraman's thillana in the raga Behag and SM took up a Tarana in the same raga. She herself composed the Tarana. It was a musical feast to music lovers. It was a real excelent concert.
Please forgive my mistakes in this review.

Thanks for the review. I am curious to find out which portions the vocalists sang together perhaps in the Abheri/Bhimplas - or was it more like one Carnatic composition then one Hindustani composition?

actually
for example .
BJ sang."bhajare manasa sri raguveeram" with many sangathis
then SM came out with a portion of hindustani piece
the again Bj sang anupallavi,SM took Hindustani composition
the BJ took the charanam and SM followed
almost all the krithis were sung in this manner..except the saraswathi ragam where SM completed the HM composition and after that BJ sang the CM composition...
i hope your doubt is clarified

None of the songs were sung together...

Raenathv552,
Great list ! Looks like a lot of thought and planning has gone into the concert from the artists. Would have loved to have attended this.
Can you give the scale of Sumanesaranjani as sung by them ? There is a Chengalpattu Ranganathan's thillana in this raga. The way I was taught this raga was that it is Suddha dhanyasi with suddha madyama replaced by prati madhyama, Just wondering if it is the same raga ?

No, she sings it in Revathi. But she sings "Haririha" (Jayadeva Ashtapathi) in Sumanesaranjani.
