Thanks Lakshman Sir. I checked Medieval.org and I did not see any entry for Kanada Ragam or Shri mAtrubhUtam.

The composer is Agastyar (not the ancient sage).

The composer's name is more accurately Agattiyanar.

Since tamizh did not originally have a letter for the 's' sound, I think words like agastiyar or agastiyanAr (both are the same, AFAIK) get morphed to 'agattiyar' or 'agattiyanAr'.

On a side note: I think we should not believe everything on karnatik.com unless we find independent confirmation from elsewhere (it really amazes me that people do not hold websites to the same rigor that they usually apply to information from someone in person - that adage, 'In God we trust, everyone else must show proof' is rather useful in any situation, I think!)

Did early tamil have the S sound (as in kaSTam)?
How did they write such words without the S?-KaTTam?

Wonder how 'krishNa' was written.

Someone who knows tamizh script better than I do should be able to help. :)

Sh sound is written with ஷ . It may not be part of the official tamil alphabet but I have seen this frequently used for Sh sound when it occurs in the middle of a word. ( I am now reminded of Ravi's experience with the madras university clerks on how to write his name :( )

I guess any sa (as in samayam) and sha (as in shankar) sound was represented by the third character in the tamil alphabet list.
If the word stared with Sa (as in SaNmukhapriyA) they must have still used the third character. If it occured in the middle iof the word they may have used either D or T as needed.

Valid point. I provided the info based on my own assessment of how plausible it was. And it helps to disambiguate the composer from the ancient sage.

Yes, it's a good idea not to blindly believe internet info - and the advice applies to this forum also!
