similarities between the raga jog and gambheeranatai.....

hello rasikas,
i heard the raga jog sung by sri ram parasuram and anuradha sriram in bombay . my doubt : are the ragas jog and ghambeeranatai the same??....
i feel they are the same....please tell me whether i am right or wrong....and please pour in all the details about these two ragas..

I think Hindustani Tilang is equivalent to Carnatic Gambhira nattai.

I am no expert, but when I first heard jOg, my impression was that there wasn't any other rAg besides durbAri which sounded as sad and solemn. Then I realized that it sounded (to me, anyway), as if it was a slow motion nATai which is an energising rAgA.
We have another thread going (gangaik karait tOTTam). It is about film music where rAgAs mix or get flexible to let other rAgAs creep in. Even in HM, with all the mishra rAgAs, such a thing exists.
As for CM too, while we would like to hear a rAgA rendered in its pure form, we cannot deny that there are some aspects of them which have gone unexplored due to various reasons--tradition (habit) being one of them...

What I could make out (purely theoretical, not being too familar with either ragas)

Gambheera Nattai is the same as Jog except that the latter uses both Nishadas
Nattai uses two Nishadas as well (D3/N2 and N3) but has Sadharana Gandharam (R3/G2) which is not used in Jog
Telang and Jog are almost the same but Jog uses N2 in aro and N3 in avaro. whereas the opposite is the case in Tilang

I think the doubt is the similarity between jog and gambhIra nATTai(GN) , not nATTai. GN has only n3 in both ar and avr.

For jog, bot n3 and n2 in the avr is as we hear from MSS . The sadhAraNa gAndhAram is more like the vivadi note r3. The song in the Malayalam movie "His Highness Abdullah " sounds jog.

Can someone please give the arohana avarohana of Tilang? Is kakali nishadam used only in arohana and kaisiki in avarohana? What are the common prayogas. I heard sri lalgudi's tillana in Tilang. It uses daivatam. I am confused.

I don't think this tillAna uses dhaivata. Can you tell where you see this note?

I felt there was dhaivatam in the pallavi. I could be wrong. But wanted to see what others thought.

There have been discussion on this in the grahabhEda thread

a few times. The 'dhiavata' you are referring to is a result of how the mind latches on to a wrong AdhAra shruti.
