A sudden spurt has been seen in the demand for tomatoes and eggs at the nearby pazhamudirsolai since yesterday evening. I hope its all for domestic consumption ;)
When did they start selling eggs in pazhamudirsolai? (;-

Ha ha ! I hope they live by their name and don't sell eggs. That takes one potential missile material off the list

Nice job, Ram :)

Once again, my apologies to you and fellow forumites for just rushing off. We had to be in Anna Nagar for 7.00pm.

Our accountant had numbed my brain beyond socialising --- took me until about 7.00pm to mentally thaw out. That numbers have that effect on me is the reason I shall probably never be either rich --- or a mridangist!

Waiting for more details... I keep looking at kutcheri review and recordings, no updates there yet!! Ram - You may want to follow "mridangam" style and review the concert yourself (;- ( No offence meant Balaji Sir.. - it is a good practise, as we get inside view of the concert)

This was a concert given by a couple of youngsters, and it would be unfair to turn the rasika's searchlight on them in the same way as it might shine on older performers; let's give the young ladies concerned a couple more years before we do that.

I don't want to make another Nick Thread Diversion of this --- but should vidwan/vidushi be reserved for the most senior and accomplished of artists? If not, then I have a cultural misunderstanding of the term and look forward to a quick correction.

Vid = Vidwan, Vidushi, Vidyarthi etc etc ;)

Using the abbreviation helps ;)

But seriously speaking, I agree with you Nick. It's just that I have been using "Vid" for the artists as a respectful term for quite a while now.

vidvAn = Knowledgeable exponent (for normal artists)
mahAvidvAn = A great vidvan (for very senior artists)

Ah... so an abbreviated vid may grow to become a vidwan, and even later, might become a mahavidwan? ;)

I do think it useful to keep something in reserve for the most-seniors and most-gifteds.

Skris introduces the knowledge (vidwat?) factor in his definition. I'm sure there are many good performers who would not claim to be good theorists.

Very nice - shri mAtA as main and the tani to follow that. Sounds wonderful. Congrats Ram and look forward to hearing some clips!

BTW where was niraval sung in shri mAtA?

Few comments about the concert
----------------------------------------------
I was late to the concert , just entered when swaras began at kalyAnavasantham.Overall an ok to good impression just set in my mind , with sathej prompting me that I had missed a begadA and bahudAri it was a kind of ok and sad experience , I just love bahudAri. IMHO, this young vidushi went for too many rare krithis from there onwards. At times singing too many rare krithis brings a feeling possibly the depth is missing . Particularly taking a very tough uphill bEgaDa and perhaps a muttuswami dikshitar krithi (that too this krithi )Was to me a kind of a case of artist-plusplus demonstrating possibly her classicism in courage , but certainly a kind of minusminus in capturing rasikas attention. At times shruthi's shruthi was really challenged. I did notice not just me even our dear gul karni chesterton was kind of possibly stumped . I am atleast assuming begaDA and MD krithi like shree mAthA needs a real solid concert experience. The last two in subhapantuvarAli and darbAri were both good. The violinst SrividyA Iyer, played just good.

Few Comments about vidwAn rAmkumAr
--------------------------------------------------------

Certainly there was beautiful nAdham from rams , really liked it throughout. The tani for 8 minutes was really good ,it was not a kind of hey I just go with the song and wrap it up. A little detour to explain what was lacking . At times when I hear SHri uks playing for semmangudi(remembering him in his 100th :) year) , there is some kind of knack that Shri UKS has mastered most successfully , kind of take those omnipresent silences in between pallavi and anupallavi etc and also non noticeble millisecond breath pause of semmangudi (which I have a feeling only UKS and TS would only have noticed) grab those and just give more strokes and push the singer to such heights so that the concert never sags . This is something I see just not UKS doing , nowadays neyveli nArAyanan even does it , so it is kind of very much there in UKS school and is not something that I am wishing too much.

I just came out with a feeling to be proven right in due course , perhaps if rams had few juicy full toss krithis like marivarE gati or deva deva kalayAmithE or a harihara putram, rams would have demonstrated those great knacks and just must have impressed all of us much much more . Too much of unfamiliar krithis may have stumped rams(speculating here :() . All said and done , rams played beautifully and there was no amateaurish stroke ever.

Good luck to you , I am sure you are heading north buddy!!!

Great to hear such good stuff about you Ram, from Bharath ('he stole the show!'), Sathej, fellow mrudangist Nagaraj, and in detail from Rajesh.
Not that it comes as a surprise, you trying to walk in the footsteps of your guru...
Wishing you super mrudanagam playing in the coming years...

Rajesh,
You pin-pointed the reason why even lay rasikAs like myself are drawn into UKS's performance. nAdam, expertise and all merits apart, it is the way he carries the flow of the concert unimpeded, making sure that even if the vocalist is heading for a 'sag' at some point , he carries him aloft, by accompanying him in a dynamic way, coaxing him into giving the best he can...

Nagaraj's erode-ition in his thread explains why I got lost with the mohara/korvai. Next time I have the pleasure of giving Ram a lift, perhaps he'd explain the composition to me very slowly --- please!

Beautiful comments, rajesh.

The song list of the concert is very intriguing - is the vocalist a disciple of Chengalpet Sri Ranganathan? Kritis like kanulutAkani and shri mAtA are heard nowadays only from him. I must confess a preference for lists like this where upcoming artistes make the effort to showcase rarer krithis. Especially when a Vidushi takes up bEgaDa as main and that too a magnum opus like shri mAtA, extra bonus points for guts and conviction in kriti selection. Definitely for most rasikAs these krithis would be unfamiliar and I agree with Rajesh's point that it's relatively challenging to follow a concert like this.

However, if an vocalist is planning a concert with such a setlist, I believe it would enhance the experience for all concerned if they record these compositions and share them with their accompanying artistes. This would help them understand the structure of the songs, know the emphasis points in the words [for violinists especially important while following], think about a couple tIrmAnams to play at appropriate iDams [for percussion artistes] , and in general contribute to the feeling of saukhyam that comes when all the artistes reach a high degree of familiarity with music. In my opinion this is the intangible quality which we are discussing that is so prevalent in the music of UKS Sir, Sankaran Sir, Raghu Sir, Murthy Sir etc while accompanying great artistes like SSI etc. They must have heard thousands of concerts and played for thousands of concerts too, all the while internalizing songs and different artistes' ways of singing. With the ease in sharing digital media today, this experience can be further enhanced.

I read that Sri Vijay Siva does this always - he shares his recordings of unfamiliar pieces with his accompanying artistes well in advance for them to learn up before the concert. Perhaps that's one reason why his concerts are generally not just individual successes, but one comes away from his performances with a very wholesome and balanced feeling of contentment.

Please do share your recordings, Ram. Looking forward to hearing you and the other artistes too!!!

Prashant,
I agree with you whole-heartedly about vocalists sharing unfamiliar songs with accompanists before hand. Vijay Siva has to be applauded for doing this.
I have a personal experience on this. When Arasi CD came out, Sumitra Nitin gave a concert on the day of the release. Both the accompanists are accomplished. Sumitra Nitin made sure that she shared the recording with the accompanists well in advance (only the main song she sang was not on the CD).
While Charulatha Ramanujam played beautifully, the mrudangist I had heard before and had liked--fell short of my expectations. The reason? He could not get round to listening to them before the concert. Every song in the concert was a new one!
By the way, the accompanists on the CD did not accompany her that day...

Phew!

I have to admit to some sense of relief, knowing, as we do, your sense of disappointment at the support of the last event.

I feel that there is something applicable from the Bhagavad Gita, but I am not pandit to catch it into the right words: it is to do with our doing, and then the consequences being out of out hands.

Forgive me: I waffle. I look forward to the concert.

Nick,
You waffled perhaps, but are wafting happily in receiving the news, no doubt!
Great to hear that Aishwarya is singing (I am assuming it is the youngest of Aishwaryas we know). VR on the mrudangam as well!
Looking forward for more info on this concert.
Thank you Cool, for letting the rasikAs know...

Arasi, singing NO, playing YES. I thought Aishwarya performed on the violin and was not a vocalist. Youngest amongst us, perhaps very true.

If you travel from Alwarpet junction, it is the second street on the left after Spencers . The turning is at the junction where Arogya pharmacy is housed. Further, the premises is the 5th building on the left where you will find a mango tree.
