To start with, let us discuss a few dhyAna shlOkas -

sarvAriShTa nivArakam SuBhakaram pingAkSam aGhApaham
sItAnvESaNa tatparam kapivaram kOtIndusUryapraBham
lankAdvIpaBhayankaram sakaladam sugrIva sammAnitam
dEvEndrAdi samastadEva vinutam kAkutsadUtam bhajE

Let us meditate on that messenger of rAma - the remover of all misfortune, the bestower of auspiciousness, the One that has reddish brown eyes and frees from sins, the One who went in search of sItA, the best among monkeys, effulgent like a million Suns and moons, terror to the lankA island, the One who bestows everything, the One greatly respected by sugrIva and in whom indra and all the other dEvas take delight.

danujavanakRshAnam jnAninAm agragaNyam
sakalaguNa nidhAnam vAnarANAm adhIsham
raGhupativaradUtam vAtajAtam namAmi

To the abode of uncomparable power with a body glittering like a mountain of gold, to the One who incinerated the forest of the demons and the foremost among the learned, to the refuge of all virtues and the Lord of the vAnaras, to the able messenger of the Lord of the raGhus, to the One born to the wind god, I pay my prostrations.

Oh Lord ANJANEYA! The emissary of Lord RAMA, one who is in the proximity of the noble, protect me.
In your prowess, you are greater than the KUNJARAVARENYA-foremost among the elephants. You always please the celestials and eminent sages.
As a child, you frightened the sun; the effulgence of your form surpasses the mount MERU. You destroyed KUMBHAKARNA- the formidable brother of RAVANA. You have the glory of alleviating the immense sorrow of SITA. You vanquished a host of demons like JAMBUMALI. You crossed the ocean skillfully, and set fire on LANKA, with your tail.
You are the great warrior who fought fierce battles. Oh the son of the wind-god!, you are endowed with unsurpassable strength and speed. You destroyed AKSHAKUMARA-the son of RAVANA, by hitting him with the palm of your powerful hand. You are the bravest among the monkeys. Your great virtues are sung by the celestials, men and demi-gods. You learnt all the scriptures from the sun-god himself. You dwell in the KADALI forest. You escaped from the clutches of the giantess SIMHIKA.
Oh one who brought the herbal mountain the Mount SANJIVINI; you are the mighty warrior, having graceful pale red eyes. You destroyed the demon warrior YUPAKSHA. You destroyed ASOKA forest and made your enemy shiver by burning down the forests. You knocked RAVANA unconscious with a blow from your fist. With great ecstasy and esteem you extol KAMALANABHA. Please favour me and protect.

The celebrated messenger of rAma, the One born of the wind god, the yellow-eyed One who wears a tuft, the remover of sItA's misery, conquerer of rAvaNa, the One who brought lakSmaNa to life by fetching the mountain of herbs, the One who showed us that He could cross the vast salty ocean, let this brave glorious hanUmAna reside in my mind and lead my actions to success.

Comparable to the rising run, the magnanimous One with powerful arms, lovely as a crore kAmadEvas is an expert is all types of knowledge.

Although this shlOka is enlisted with AnjanEya shlOkas is several places, this seems to apply well to skanda also.

Let the son of the wind god, the joy of SrirAma's heart, the wish-fulfilling tree of the devotees with hands bestowing fearlessness (aBhaya hastham) and boons (varada hastham) purify me.

aBhayam varadam dOrBhyAm kalayE
dOrBhyAm = by both (two) arms
which are
aBhayam varadam (as you have described)
kalayE = I be influenced (taken posession of)
In most of the temples Anjaneya displays the 'a~njali' mudra (devotion).
There is a special temple where he displays abhaya cum varada mudra (I forget which one!)

One more sloka on Hanuman which says what all one gets by remembering HanumAn:
Intelligence, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, freedom from diseases, sharp intellect and eloquency in speech-one gets all these by remembering Hanuman.

Punarvasu - thanks for the shlOkam - I was saving it for a phalaSruti - but evidently AnjanEya gives us phalaSruti even before the aShtOttara.

I pay my prostrations to the son of vAyu, the best among monkeys - the One with yellow eyes and hair whose arms, legs and face are the color of rabbit's blood, the lustre from whose body shines brilliantly as a crore suns, blinding by its glare (making it difficult to see), who with His nails and teeth, radiant like the full moon, removes all darkness from the horizon.

There may be some corrections needed to this shlOka. I need help - especially with the portions jala prashyamara, sandohanasya and udvAndhasa (udvA andha sa - I cannot understand the 'sa' here).

:) The very smarana of AnjanEya give us all this; you have already thought about him when you started this thread.
It is said that one get moksha if one is born in Tiruvarur
or if one dies in KAsi; but the very thought of arunachala-TiruvaNNAmalai -gives one moksha. It is the same here.

Check the verses again
It may be
rAkA candrAmshu jalaprashyAmaka nakha = nails which darken (prashyAmaka) and dull (jala) the brilliance of full moon (rAkAcandraAmshu)
damShTrAmshu sandOhanasya udvAndhasa cakravALaM = the brilliance of teeth (damShTrAmshu) milking (sandOhanasya) extracted food/essence (udvAndhasa) of the
encircling horizon (cakravALa)

Ok. I see the posts now. Are we going through aesthetic changes to rasikas.org or is it just me?
